Donald J. SMITH, 82, Warsaw, died at 6:50 a.m. Sunday at Kosciusko Community
Hosptal, Warsaw.
Born in Kosciusko County to Merrill and Ruby ERNSBERGER SMITH, he resided in
Warsaw for the last 10 years, having come from Gunville, Ill. He was a World War II Army
veteran and worked as a floral designer.
Surviving are one sister, Mary Esther ROMINE, Mentone; three nephews; and his
companion Bob HIGGINBOTHAM, Warsaw.
No visitation or funeral services are planned.
Echo L. McCalla
Feb. 15, 1914 - June 2, 1996
Echo L. McCALLA, 82, Rochester, died at 3:40 a.m. Saturday at Woodlawn Hospital.
He was born in Deedsville to Chester and Hulda GILLILAND McCALLA. He was a
retired truck driver for Myers Drive-A-Way and Holiday Rambler Corp. A member of the
Rochester [VFW], American Legion and the Rochester Eagles Lodge, and he earned a Purple
Heart in World War II serving with the U.S. Army Infantry in North Africe and Europe.
Preceding him in death are one daughter, Barbara [TURNER]; one great-grandson; one
sister, and three brothers.
Surviving are four daughters, Nancy ANDERSON, Lakeville, Gladys GALLOWAY and
Conne TERPSTRA, both of Rochester, and Sandra WISENBERG, Sebring, Fla.; three sons
George SCOTT, Indianapolis, Laverne SCOTT, Rochester, Harold C. McCALLA, Rochester; five
sisters, Florence WOOD, Helen HOFFMAN, Marjorie MILLER, Barbara CLARK, and Pat
LAMB, all of Rochester; one brother, Harold E. McCALLA, Rochester; twenty grandchildren and
seventeen great-grandchildren.
Services and burial will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at the Deedsville I.O.O.F. Cemetery,
Deedsville with Rev. Larry PYEATT officiating.
Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Rochester American Legion and
Veterans of Foreign Wars. [Zimmerman Family Funeral Home, Rochesrter, are in charge of
arrangements].
Doreta E. Gearhart
Oct. 24, 1904 - June 2, 1996
Doreta E. JENNINGS GEARHART, 91, North Manchester, died at 5:15 a.m. Sunday at
Peabody Retirement Home, North Manchester.
Born in Frenchtown, Penn. to Joseph and Lena DeMAISON JENNINGS, she married
Ray GEARHART in 1940. She worked for Viscoes Co., Meadville, Penn. and was a member of
St. Robert’s Catholic Church, North Manchester, and the Rosary Sodality of the church. She lived
most of her life in Wabash County.
Preceding in death were her husband Ray Gearhart ad three brothers.
Surviving are one step-son, Fred GEARHART, Markle; four step-grandchildren; two
step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Bender Chapel Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral
Home, North Manchester, with Rev. Robert HAMMOND officiatng. Burial will take place in the
Oaklawn Cemetery, North Manchester. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m at the funeral home.
Rosary services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorials can be made to St. Robert’s Catholic Church.
