Jan. 28, 1914 - June 2, <strong>1996</strong><br />

Donald J. SMITH, 82, Warsaw, died at 6:50 a.m. Sunday at Kosciusko Community<br />

Hosptal, Warsaw.<br />

Born in Kosciusko <strong>County</strong> to Merrill and Ruby ERNSBERGER SMITH, he resided in<br />

Warsaw for the last 10 years, having come from Gunville, Ill. He was a World War II Army<br />

veteran and worked as a floral designer.<br />

Surviving are one sister, Mary Esther ROMINE, Mentone; three nephews; and his<br />

companion Bob HIGGINBOTHAM, Warsaw.<br />

No visitation or funeral services are planned.<br />

Echo L. McCalla<br />

Feb. 15, 1914 - June 2, <strong>1996</strong><br />

Echo L. McCALLA, 82, <strong>Rochester</strong>, died at 3:40 a.m. Saturday at Woodlawn Hospital.<br />

He was born in Deedsville to Chester and Hulda GILLILAND McCALLA. He was a<br />

retired truck driver for Myers Drive-A-Way and Holiday Rambler Corp. A member of the<br />

<strong>Rochester</strong> [VFW], American Legion and the <strong>Rochester</strong> Eagles Lodge, and he earned a Purple<br />

Heart in World War II serving with the U.S. Army Infantry in North Africe and Europe.<br />

Preceding him in death are one daughter, Barbara [TURNER]; one great-grandson; one<br />

sister, and three brothers.<br />

Surviving are four daughters, Nancy ANDERSON, Lakeville, Gladys GALLOWAY and<br />

Conne TERPSTRA, both of <strong>Rochester</strong>, and Sandra WISENBERG, Sebring, Fla.; three sons<br />

George SCOTT, Indianapolis, Laverne SCOTT, <strong>Rochester</strong>, Harold C. McCALLA, <strong>Rochester</strong>; five<br />

sisters, Florence WOOD, Helen HOFFMAN, Marjorie MILLER, Barbara CLARK, and Pat<br />

LAMB, all of <strong>Rochester</strong>; one brother, Harold E. McCALLA, <strong>Rochester</strong>; twenty grandchildren and<br />

seventeen great-grandchildren.<br />

Services and burial will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at the Deedsville I.O.O.F. Cemetery,<br />

Deedsville with Rev. Larry PYEATT officiating.<br />

Military graveside rites will be conducted by the <strong>Rochester</strong> American Legion and<br />

Veterans of Foreign Wars. [Zimmerman Family Funeral Home, Rochesrter, are in charge of<br />

arrangements].<br />

Doreta E. Gearhart<br />

Oct. 24, 1904 - June 2, <strong>1996</strong><br />

Doreta E. JENNINGS GEARHART, 91, North Manchester, died at 5:15 a.m. Sunday at<br />

Peabody Retirement Home, North Manchester.<br />

Born in Frenchtown, Penn. to Joseph and Lena DeMAISON JENNINGS, she married<br />

Ray GEARHART in 1940. She worked for Viscoes Co., Meadville, Penn. and was a member of<br />

St. Robert’s Catholic Church, North Manchester, and the Rosary Sodality of the church. She lived<br />

most of her life in Wabash <strong>County</strong>.<br />

Preceding in death were her husband Ray Gearhart ad three brothers.<br />

Surviving are one step-son, Fred GEARHART, Markle; four step-grandchildren; two<br />

step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.<br />

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Bender Chapel Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral<br />

Home, North Manchester, with Rev. Robert HAMMOND officiatng. Burial will take place in the<br />

Oaklawn Cemetery, North Manchester. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m at the funeral home.<br />

Rosary services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.<br />

Memorials can be made to St. Robert’s Catholic Church.
