Feb. 27, 1918 - Sept. 7, <strong>1996</strong><br />

Helen L BURKETT, 78, formerly of <strong>Fulton</strong>, died at 4 a.m. Saturday at Miller’s Merry<br />

Manor, Logansport. Born in Washington Township, Carroll <strong>County</strong>, to Andrew and Bessie<br />

RYNEARSON HUSTON, she married Orville BURKETT on Dec. 22, 1956, in Logansport. He<br />

died Nov. 27, 1986.<br />

A 1936 graduate of Deer Creek High School she received her Bachelor’s Degree from<br />

Central Normal College, Danville, and her Master’s Degree from Ball Sate University. She was a<br />

member of Cross-Wind United Methodist Church, <strong>Rochester</strong> Eastern Star, <strong>Fulton</strong> <strong>County</strong> Retired<br />

Teacher’s Association, Indiaa State Teacher’s Associatio and Delta Kappa Gamma sorority. She<br />

retired as a teacher in 1980 from the <strong>Rochester</strong> Communty School Corporation. Prior to that, she<br />

had taught at schools in Carroll <strong>County</strong>, Jonesboro, Crown Point, Lutheran Mountain Mission in<br />

the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia, Bible School at Rocky Boy Indian Reservation in<br />

Montana, and at various church camps in Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina and Indiana.<br />

She taught school for 39 1/2 years.<br />

She is survived by one son Gerry and his wife Jackie BURKETT, <strong>Rochester</strong>; one<br />

daughter Karen and husband Loren HYLTON, Logansport; seven grandchildren Roscoe, Regan,<br />

Renee, Ryan and Rylee BURKETT, and Evan and Lindy HYLTON. She is also survived by two<br />

sisters, Margaret Ruth BRYANT and Phyllis McVAY, both of Logansport, and several nieces and<br />

nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Howard HUSTON, and two sisters, Donnabelle<br />

HUSTON and Mary Alice NALE.<br />

Services were at 11 a.m. today at the Athens United Methodist Church with the Rev.<br />

Charles E. GAST officiating Burial was at Athens Cemetery. Kroeger Funeral Home was in<br />

Dec. 15, 1981 - Sept. 9, <strong>1996</strong><br />

MONTEREY - One area teenager was killed and another was seriously injured in a<br />

motorized bicycle-car accident about 5:10 p.m. Monday.<br />

Neil BERDINE, 14, Culver was pronounced dead of massive trauma at the scene by<br />

Pulaski <strong>County</strong> Deputy Coroner Samanth BRICK.<br />

<strong>The</strong> driver of the motorized bicycle, 15-year-old Kewanna Ronny ALLEN, Delong,<br />

sustained multiple fractures and possible internal injuries. He was transported to Pulaski<br />

Memorial Hospital and was later flown to Parkview Memorial Hospital in Fort Wayne.<br />

Allen is listed inserious condition today.<br />

<strong>The</strong> crash occurred at the intersection of Pulaski <strong>County</strong> Road 600 North and <strong>County</strong><br />

Road 600 East, according to the Pulaski <strong>County</strong> Sheriff’s Department.<br />

<strong>The</strong> police report said Allen failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection and collided<br />

with a car driven by Angeline HOGAN, 27, Monterey.<br />

Hogan was south bound. She told police she “slammed” on her brakes, but was unable<br />

to stop. <strong>The</strong> impact of the crash shattred Hogan’s windshied She was unable to see. Allen told<br />

police he could not remember what happened in the accident.<br />

Hogan was not injured She was taken to Pulaski Memorial Hospital by Culver medics<br />

for treatment of what was thought to be shock.<br />
