March 12, 1912 - Feb. 21, <strong>1996</strong><br />

Leroy D. GRAVES, 83, 19681 Brick Road, South Bend, died at 12:30 a.m. Wednesday at<br />

St. Joseph’s Medical Center, South Bend.<br />

He was born in Kokomo. On Sept. 16, 1934; he married Opal MILLER, who survives.<br />

Professor Graves received his M.S. degree from Purdue University in 1941 and was a member of<br />

the Civil Egineerig faculty at the University of Notre Dame for 31 years. He was a founding<br />

partner of Shilts, Graves and Associates, Inc., an engieering consulting firm in South Bend. He<br />

was a member of the St Joseph Valley Chapter of the Indiana Society of Professioal Engineers, the<br />

American Society of Civil Enginers, the American Society for Engineering Education, Sigma Xi<br />

Scientific Research Society, Chi Epsilon and the Methodist Church.<br />

He was honored in 1981 as the Outstanding Engineer of the Indiana Section of the<br />

American Society of Civil Engieers and as the Engineer of the Year by the St. Joseph Valley<br />

Chapter of the Indiana Society of Professional Engineers<br />

Survivig with his wife are one daughter, LeeAnn COSPER, Leiden, Netherlands; one<br />

son, Terry GRAVES, Redlands, Calif.; four grandchildren; and one sister, Lillian<br />

CUNNINGHAM, <strong>Rochester</strong>.<br />

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Welsheiemer Funeral Home, South Bend. Friends<br />

may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.<br />

Mabel K. Heckathorn<br />

Jan. 28, 1910 - Feb. 22, <strong>1996</strong><br />

Mabel K. HECKATHORN, 86, Rt. 1, Denver, died at 3:08 a.m. today at Miller’s Merry<br />

Manor, Peru.<br />

She was born in Miami <strong>County</strong> to Edward and Rose WOLF BLACK. On June 19, 1930,<br />

in Mexico, she married Joe D. HECKATHORN, who died on May 15, 1993. She was a clerk at<br />

Culter Hardware, Peru, for many years before retiring in 1984. She was a member of the Peru<br />

First Brethren Church.<br />

Surviving are one daughter, Judy DRISCOLL, Peru; one son, Don HECKATHORN,<br />

Denver; one brother, Paul E. BLACK, Anderson; two sisters, Ruby WILLIAMS, New Waverly;<br />

and Ruth MICHAEL, Wabash; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Preceding in<br />

death were her parents, two great-grandchidren; two sisters, Edna FERGUSON and Carrie<br />

SHARP; and three brothers, Bob BLACK, Art BLACK and Howard BLACK.<br />

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at McClain Funeral Home, Denver, with the Rev.<br />

Jim NAFF officiating. Burial will be in the Ever-Rest Memorial Park, Logansport. Friends may<br />

call from 2 to 8 p.m Friday at the funeral home.
