Floyd L. Tipmore<br />

Jan. 1, 1919 - June 25, <strong>1996</strong><br />

Floyd L. “Bill” TIPMORE, 77, died Tuesday at Mercy Hospital in Miami, Fla., after a<br />

long illess. He resided at 11 Island Ave., Apt. 609, Miami Beach, Fla., 33139.<br />

Born Jan. 1, 1919, in Elkhart, he starred in football at Elkhart High School and in 1938<br />

entered Indiana University, where he captained the varsity football and basketball teams. At I.U.<br />

he was a member of Delta Upsilon social fraternity along with Blue Key and Sphinx Club<br />

honorary societies.<br />

Before graduating from I.U. in 1942 with a degree in finance, he and Joan Elizabeth<br />

BARR of <strong>Rochester</strong> eloped for marriage at Elkhart on July 27, 1940, and last year observed their<br />

55th wedding anniversary<br />

He was a veteran of World War II as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy, seeing<br />

action in the European, North African and Pacific theatres. After the war he served in Naval<br />

Intelligence at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.<br />

Upon leaving the service, he operated a dairy farm east of <strong>Rochester</strong> before entering the<br />

public relaions field in 1958. He was executive vice president of the Huntington Chamber of<br />

Commerce for seven years, then became director of public relations and development for<br />

Huntington College.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Tipmores moved in 1971 to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where he worked at Landmark<br />

Bank until retirement in 1985.<br />

Mr. Tipmore was selected to the Silver Anniversary Indiana All-State High School<br />

Barketvall team of 1962 and at Huntington was named the Jaycees’ Outstanding Citizen in 1960<br />

and Optimist of the Year in 1966.<br />

He also was a member of the advisory board of Our Lady of Victory Noll, director of the<br />

Huntington Chamber of Commerce, director of Indiana College <strong>Public</strong> Relatios Association<br />

Honoraries, American College of <strong>Public</strong> Relations Association and president of Huntington<br />

Rotary Club.<br />

Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Marianne CANNON, Wenham, Mass.; a<br />

son, David TIPMORE, Miami Beach; two granddaughtrs, Emily and Catherine CANNON; a<br />

sister, Betty SCHIEBE, Grand Rapids, Mich., nieces and nephews.<br />

A memorial seervice will be conducrted at Miami Beach Friday, following cremation.<br />

Memorials may be made to the Catholic Hospice of Miami Lakes, Fla.<br />

Lepha J. Smith<br />

March 5, 1904 - June 25, <strong>1996</strong><br />

Lepha SMITH, 92, Mooresville, died at 10:50 a.m. Tuesday at Miller’s Merry Manor,<br />

Mooresville.<br />

Born in Rocheter to Frank and Maude E. ZORTMAN MUSSELMAN, she married<br />

Samuel SMITH on March 2, 1934. She was a first grade teacher for Wayne Township schools for<br />

22 years, retiring in 1969. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa, a retired teacher’s<br />

sorority. She graduated from Blakers Teacher’s College and Butler College.<br />

Surviving are three sons, James R. SMITH, Indianapolis, Thomas M. SMITH, Crown<br />

Point, and Jerome P. SMITH, Atlantic City, N.J.; two sisters, Opal SAVAGE and Lova POWELL,<br />

both of <strong>Rochester</strong>; eleven grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren.<br />

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Jones Family Mortuary, Mooresville, with<br />

Rev. Charles PAXTON officiating. Burial will be at the Washington Park Cemetery, Indianapolis,<br />

and visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. Friday at the mortuary.
