Paul Backus<br />

June 4, 1906 - March 4, <strong>1996</strong><br />

Paul BACKUS, 89, forerly of Akron, died at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Life Care Center of<br />

<strong>Rochester</strong>.<br />

He was born in Madison to John and Virginia STOCKDALE BACKUS. On April 5,<br />

1930, in Hanover, he married Velma M. KERN, who died on Nov. 18, 1990. He was the former<br />

owner of the Times <strong>The</strong>atre, <strong>Rochester</strong>, and was a member of the Indiana-Kentucky Baptist<br />

Church, Madison.<br />

Surviving are one son, James BACKUS, Wabash; two grandsons, Steven BACKUS,<br />

Akron; and Daniel BACKUS, Mentone; and eight great-gradchildren. Preceding in death were<br />

two grandchildren, two brothers and two sisters.<br />

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the <strong>Rochester</strong> Citizens Cemetery.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re will be a private family visitation at the Zimmerman Family Funeral Home, <strong>Rochester</strong>.<br />

Wavelene Hoppes<br />

Dec. 31, 1906 - March 3, <strong>1996</strong><br />

Wavelene HOPPES, 89, formerly of 436 S. Broadway, Peru, died at 4:40 p.m. Sunday at<br />

Life Care Center of <strong>Rochester</strong>.<br />

She was born in Redkey to Charles and Herma COONS RANTZ. On May 1, 1926, she<br />

married R. Clyde HOPPES, who died June 16, 1974. She was a homemaker and a member of the<br />

Peru Grace Brethren Church, Dukes Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Peru Garden Club, Women’s<br />

Missionary Fellowship of Grace Brethren Church, Peru, and the Anachronian Club.<br />

Surviving are one son, Robert HOPPES, <strong>Rochester</strong>; three daughters, Mrs. Dale (Mary Jo)<br />

THOMAS, Lockport, Ill.; Mrs. Donald (Dorothy) THOMAS, Salina, Kan.; Mrs. Earl (Joyce)<br />

GLASSBURN, Kokomo; nine grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren. Preceding in<br />

death were one brother and one grandson.<br />

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Peru Grace Brethren Church, with the Rev.<br />

Gerald KELLEY officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Peru. Visitation will be<br />

from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home, Peru, and one<br />

hour before the service on Thursday at the church.<br />

Judy Kay Rater<br />

Jan. 1, 1939 - March 3, <strong>1996</strong><br />

Judy Kay RATER, 57, Rt. 3, Box 130, Winamac, died at 6:30 a.m. Sunday at Methodist<br />

Hospital of Indiana, Indianapolis. She was born in Lake Bruce to Lawrence H. and Ethel Mae<br />

COPELAND HETTINGER. On June 4, 1960, in Winamac, she married Carl R. RATER, who<br />

survives. She had resided in Winamac all of her life and was a 1957 graduate of Winamac High<br />

School. She was a homemaker and former telephone operator with United Telephone Co.<br />

Surviving with her husband are four daughters, Louise WRIGHT, Belleville, Ill.; Donna<br />

Sue WALKER, Rensselaer; Carla Lynn ROBINSON, Medaryville; and Becky Jo GOOD,<br />

Winamac; two sons, Carl Dewayne RATER, Buckeye, Ariz.; and Jeffery Dean RATER,<br />

Medaryville; eleven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one brother, Larry<br />

HETTINGER, Terre Haute. Preceding in death were one grandson, one great-grandson, and a<br />

brother, Tommy HETTINGER.<br />

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Frain Mortuary, Winamac, with the Rev. Carl<br />

LENDERMON officiating. Burial will be in the Winamace Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-<br />

5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m today and after 8 a.m. Wedesday at the funeral home.
