USEPA QUALITATIVE ASSESSMENT OF CARCINOGENS<br />

The USEPA applies a qualitative weight of evidence scheme in assessing the potential<br />

for a contaminant to increase the risk of cancer in humans. This schcme consists<br />

of five groups:<br />

Group A—Human Carcinogen: Sufficient evidence in humans.<br />

Group B—Probable Human Carcinogen: Limited evidence in humans or no evidence<br />

in humans but sufficient evidence in animals.<br />

Group C—Possible Human Carcinogen: Limited or equivocal evidence in animals<br />

in the absence of human data.<br />

Group O—Not Classifiable as to Human Carcinogenicity: Inadequate or no data<br />

available.<br />

Group E—No Evidence of Carcinogenicity for Humans: Negative evidence in at<br />

least two species.<br />
