USEPA QUALITATIVE ASSESSMENT OF CARCINOGENS
The USEPA applies a qualitative weight of evidence scheme in assessing the potential
for a contaminant to increase the risk of cancer in humans. This schcme consists
of five groups:
Group A—Human Carcinogen: Sufficient evidence in humans.
Group B—Probable Human Carcinogen: Limited evidence in humans or no evidence
in humans but sufficient evidence in animals.
Group C—Possible Human Carcinogen: Limited or equivocal evidence in animals
in the absence of human data.
Group O—Not Classifiable as to Human Carcinogenicity: Inadequate or no data
available.
Group E—No Evidence of Carcinogenicity for Humans: Negative evidence in at
least two species.
