6. POTENTIEL DE GÉNÉRALISATION
Projet 31
Setup of an Integrated System for Persons Suffering from Major Psychistric Problems
Ssystème intégré, troubles mentaux sévères et retard mental, région du Nunavik
for intensive psychiatric support due to chronic suicidal gestures and unmanageable psychotic behaviour. All other program participants
have remained in their respective programs.
Clients autonomy : many of these clients, except for those in the short-term crisis intervention program, lack simple skills such as preparing
light meals, assuming personal hygiene or managing a simple budget.
With intensive support and guidance from staff, these clients have made remarkable improvement in their daily life skills. Presently, all the
program participants are able to prepare light meals, shop on their own at the local store and take care of their personal hygiene and
surroundings.
The improved aspects in quality of life of the program participants, with the exception of one, were dramatic.
It is worthy to note that after joining the program, the majority of the clients managed to deal effectively (except for occasional relapses)
with their addictions problems.
Except for one client, none of the clients was hospitalized in the course of the program, although many had required intermittent
hospitalization prior to their admission.
With the exception of one client, the clients made outstanding improvements in their involvement in community events, social interactions
and work and training programs.
In general, all the client respondents (7) indicated that they were very satisfied with support services received at the centre. For instance,
they articulated that the help they were receiving from staff had helped them deal effectively with their illness.
The relatives also indicated that they found it important to get personally involved in the treatment of their family member. However, staff at
the centre indicated that many of these relatives were reluctant to get actively involved in the development of the clients’ treatment plan.
6.1 Pérennité The continuity of the project should be assured right from the beginning by a written commitment.
The one-year budget was underestimated in the initial project. A new budget request based on a new location (10 bedrooms) and a more
complete program (readjustments after evaluation process) was submitted to the NRBHSS and the MSSS for project continuation.
It is strongly recommended that the training program be continued for three years.
6.2 Conditions nécessaires A regional program for job creation and training for the clientele with mental health problems should be set up.
The area in which staff needs additional theoretical and practical knowledge are: generic practice guidelines, brief outline of psychiatry,
common diagnoses made by psychiatrists, counselling skills, psychoactive medication, treatment guidelines in substance addictions,
victims/victimizers in sexual abuse, suicidal behaviour, post-traumatic stress disorder, stress-management workshop, mental illness and
the law: Provincial Mental Health Act, Canadian Charter of Rights.
A certified program should be developped for the workers in the Aanarraapik Group Home covering youth rehabilitation, substance abuse
and the cultural aspect of clients.
