Projet 31
Setup of an Integrated System for Persons Suffering from Major Psychistric Problems
Ssystème intégré, troubles mentaux sévères et retard mental, région du Nunavik
If a community does not have trained persons to offer specialized services, it should work with the employment and training regional
bodies to offer full-time training before the project starts.
Additional funds should be invested in the project to have psychoeducators travel to the other communities to: follow up discharged clients,
provide information for clients’ family members so they understand the program and offer expertise to social and community workers for
service and intervention plans; at least one additional psychoeducator is needed.
In any project proposal, there should be a list of qualifications for the personnel members and the training plan that will be offered to them.
Consider the hiring of two teams of psychoeducators for the first year of the project. They could work on a two-month-schedule (two
months on, two months off) in remote regions or two weeks (on and off) in the south, to prevent burnout.
The staff must have a very strong background (training and experience) to deal with crises and suicide attempts. If not, they must receive
training to face such situations.
For any pilot project, it is important to obtain the support of an existing committee that has a mandate relevant to the project. This
committee should be involved from the beginning of the project (writing the proposal) and support the coordinator at each phase of the
implementation process.
In any project proposal concerning this clientele, the cost of one or two vehicles should be considered. The clients have to go outside for
activities, the staff has to supervise them at home or at work and they have to go to the nursing station everyday for medication.
6.3 Avantages généralisation The evaluation of client satisfaction shows that most of the clients were satisfied with the services provided by the centre and would
recommend the centre to a friend. The program developed during the pilot project should be publicized in other Native communities
(Nunavik and elsewhere).
