Is a Property <strong>Services</strong> referral needed?<br />

Property <strong>Services</strong> referrals should not be made<br />

except in extraordinary circumstances when the value<br />

or status <strong>of</strong> property cannot be determined.<br />

Niche, Interment Space<br />

Can an individual own a crypt, niche, or interment<br />

space?<br />

Each individual may have one crypt, niche, or<br />

interment space, for personal use up to a maximum<br />

value <strong>of</strong> $500. Any amount over $500 must be<br />

counted as part <strong>of</strong> the resource limit.<br />

NOTE: For those who own a pre-need, nontransferable,<br />

non-reimbursable funeral plan,<br />

a statement must be on file indicating there is<br />

no cash value/reimbursement available on<br />

the plan.<br />

Insurance <strong>Policy</strong><br />

Can an individual own an insurance policy?<br />

Yes, the first $500 <strong>of</strong> the CSV (cash surrender value<br />

– the amount received if the policy is<br />

surrendered/converted to cash) is exempt on<br />

insurance policies on the life <strong>of</strong> each individual to pay<br />

for burial, provided the individual has no other way to<br />

pay for burial expenses.<br />

If any individual has no other means to pay for<br />

burial/funeral expenses (excluding any crypt, niche,<br />

or interment space), and:<br />

‣ The cash surrender value is $500 or less, the<br />

entire amount is exempted.<br />

‣ The cash surrender value is $501 or more, the<br />

first $500 is exempted. The amount above<br />

$500 is to be included as part <strong>of</strong> the<br />

individual’s personal property in determining<br />

GR eligibility.<br />

If the insurance policy is not for burial/funeral
