GR 44-115.4 – Value <strong>of</strong><br />

Utilities<br />

How is the value <strong>of</strong> utilities determined?<br />

The value <strong>of</strong> utilities is the amount billed to the<br />

household by the utility company or the amount<br />

charged to the GR household by the landlord. If the<br />

landlord is contacted, the landlord’s name, date <strong>of</strong><br />

contact, and total value <strong>of</strong> the item(s) are recorded<br />

in Case Comments.<br />

• If the individual has utility statements for more<br />

than one month, the amount is averaged to<br />

determine a constant value. The computation is<br />

recorded in Case Comments.<br />

• Utilities included in the rent are not considered<br />

in-kind income.<br />

GR 44-114.5 – Value <strong>of</strong><br />

Food<br />

How is the value <strong>of</strong> food determined?<br />

The value <strong>of</strong> food is the amount in the GR Basic<br />

Budget Table and, unless documentation exists to<br />

show a higher amount. The amount to be deducted<br />

is recorded in Case Comments.<br />

Refer to GR 44-210 for the Basic Budget Table and<br />

GR 44-224 and GR 44-225 for additional<br />

information on food allowances.<br />

EXAMPLE:<br />

An individual in a single household receives a free<br />

dinner every night from a friend. According to the<br />

Food Allowance chart the monthly amount for food<br />

is $65. Divide the $65 by 3 (three meals per day) to<br />

arrive at a deductible income <strong>of</strong> $21.33.<br />
