Like Situation<br />

What is a marital like situation?<br />

Marital like couples are those who live together as<br />

spouses, but who have no legal marriage under<br />

California law. Persons who are members <strong>of</strong> such<br />

couples, therefore, have no support responsibility<br />

for each other as responsible relatives.<br />

Refer to GR 44-117 for treatment <strong>of</strong> income <strong>of</strong><br />

marital-like couples.<br />

GR 43-103 – Parents <strong>of</strong><br />

Minor Children<br />

Are parents <strong>of</strong> minor children responsible<br />

relatives?<br />

Yes, both parents, natural or adoptive, married or<br />

unmarried, are responsible for the support <strong>of</strong> their<br />

minor children. This responsibility continues until<br />

the minor has reached 18 years <strong>of</strong> age (or if<br />

enrolled in high school or a trade/technical school<br />

and is expected to complete the program before<br />

their 19 th birthday), even under the following<br />

situations:<br />

• The parent(s) is/are not living with the minor.<br />

• The parent(s) is/are not married.
