Retired pay for servicemen is arranged at the time<br />

<strong>of</strong> separation from service. No Veterans Benefits,<br />

except education and medical care, are available to<br />

retired servicemen. They should therefore not be<br />

referred to DMVA via a CA 5. No exploration <strong>of</strong> this<br />

resource is necessary because entitlement would<br />

have been previously established. Documentation<br />

may be obtained through the Armed Forces <strong>of</strong>fices<br />

listed above. The military retirement paycheck may<br />

also be reviewed.<br />

insurance for current or former military personnel<br />

Residential Resources<br />

Are residential care resources available to<br />

Veterans?<br />

Yes, there are residential care facilities in California<br />

expressly for veterans. These should not be<br />

overlooked as resources for individuals. Placement<br />

at a veteran’s home is explored during the intake<br />

process and at annual agreement. Requirements <strong>of</strong><br />

most <strong>of</strong> these facilities are not as stringent as<br />

qualifications for Veteran’s Administration (VA) cash<br />

benefits.<br />

Home<br />

What residential care facility should veterans be<br />

referred to?<br />

Veterans should be referred to the California<br />

Veterans’ Home. The California Veterans’ Homes<br />

is a State facility providing domiciliary, nursing, and<br />

hospital care to veterans in a retirement setting.<br />

Veterans are eligible to live at the California<br />

Veterans’ Home on the basis <strong>of</strong> these general<br />

qualifications:<br />

• The Veteran has been a resident <strong>of</strong> California<br />

for the past five years.<br />

• The Veteran has had an honorable discharge,
