Must Apply Who must apply for Railroad Retirement<br />

benefits?<br />

The following individuals must apply for Railroad<br />

Retirement benefits:<br />

• Individuals who have been employed by a<br />

railroad, railroad terminal company, sleeping car<br />

or express company, railway labor organization<br />

or a company under contract to a railroad<br />

company, or ahs performed services in<br />

connection with railroad transportation.<br />

• Widows, widowers <strong>of</strong> a person who was so<br />

employed and also meets one <strong>of</strong> the following:<br />

‣ Has reached 60 th<br />

remarried.<br />

birthday and has not<br />

‣ Irrespective <strong>of</strong> age, has not remarried and<br />

has care or custody <strong>of</strong> a child <strong>of</strong> the<br />

deceased employee who is entitled to<br />

receive an annuity.<br />

‣ Disabled widow/widowers may file for<br />

possible benefits at age 50.<br />

• The individual is a child <strong>of</strong> the deceased railroad<br />

employee, is under 18 years <strong>of</strong> age and was<br />

dependent upon the employee at time <strong>of</strong> death.<br />

• The individual is one <strong>of</strong> the deceased<br />

employee’s parents, provided employee was<br />

individual’s support and left no widow/widower<br />

or child(ren) who could receive the monthly<br />

benefits. Parent(s) must be 65 years <strong>of</strong> age, or<br />

if under 65, must not have remarried.
