W. D. ARMSTRONG FUND<br />
Title and<br />
purpose.<br />
Managers.<br />
Grace 6 <strong>of</strong> 17 December 2008<br />
1. The sum <strong>of</strong> £1.6m received by <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> under <strong>the</strong> Will <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late Dr W. D. Armstrong<br />
shall form a fund, to be entitled <strong>the</strong> W. D. Armstrong Fund, to encourage <strong>the</strong> application <strong>of</strong> Engineering<br />
in Medicine in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>.<br />
2. The administration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be entrusted to a Committee <strong>of</strong> Managers consisting <strong>of</strong>:<br />
(a) <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Technology;<br />
(b) <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Clinical Medicine;<br />
(c) <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Engineering;<br />
(d) <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Medicine;<br />
(e) <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology;<br />
(f) one person appointed by <strong>the</strong> Council <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Clinical Medicine.<br />
3. The member in class (f) shall be appointed in <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term to serve for three years from<br />
1 January following her or his appointment. If one or more <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fices in classes (a)–(f) are held<br />
by <strong>the</strong> same person or if one or more <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se <strong>of</strong>fices is vacant or its tenure has expired, <strong>the</strong> Faculty<br />
Boards <strong>of</strong> Engineering and Clinical Medicine shall appoint one or more additional Managers so as to<br />
ensure that <strong>the</strong>re are always six Managers.<br />
4. The income, and under exceptional circumstances <strong>the</strong> capital, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be applied at <strong>the</strong><br />
discretion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers in accordance with Regulation 1.<br />

ASHBY SCHOLARSHIP FUND<br />
1. The sums donated by and in honour <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor M. F. Ashby, CBE, FRS, FREng, formerly<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Engineering and Royal Society Research Pr<strong>of</strong>essor, shall form a fund called <strong>the</strong> Ashby<br />
Scholarship Fund for <strong>the</strong> benefit <strong>of</strong> postgraduate students undertaking research in Mechanics and<br />
Materials and related areas in <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Engineering.<br />
2. The income, and that part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> capital <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund not earmarked by <strong>the</strong> donors for endowment,<br />
shall be used for <strong>the</strong> provision <strong>of</strong> a Scholarship to be called <strong>the</strong> Ashby Scholarship in Mechanics and<br />
Materials.<br />
3. The Electors to <strong>the</strong> Scholarship shall be <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Engineering, <strong>the</strong> Head<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> relevant Division, and one member <strong>of</strong> staff <strong>of</strong> this Division who shall be appointed by <strong>the</strong><br />
Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Engineering in <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term to serve for four years from 1 January following<br />
her or his appointment.<br />
4. In order to be eligible for <strong>the</strong> Scholarship a candidate must have been admitted, or be seeking<br />
admission, as a registered Graduate Student for research towards <strong>the</strong> Ph.D. Degree in <strong>the</strong> Department<br />
<strong>of</strong> Engineering.<br />
5. The Scholarship shall be tenable for one year in <strong>the</strong> first instance, and may be renewed by <strong>the</strong><br />
Electors for a second or third year but normally no longer.<br />
6. The Scholarship shall provide:<br />
(a) a maintenance payment to be determined by <strong>the</strong> Electors,<br />
(b) a payment to meet <strong>the</strong> Scholar’s <strong>University</strong> and College fees,<br />
(c) a contribution to o<strong>the</strong>r costs such as equipment and travel expenses according to <strong>the</strong> discretion<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Electors.<br />

F. W. ASTON FUND<br />
1. The money received from <strong>the</strong> bequest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late Francis William Aston shall constitute a fund<br />
called <strong>the</strong> F. W. Aston Fund.<br />
2. The income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be applied, on <strong>the</strong> recommendation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cavendish Pr<strong>of</strong>essor, to<br />
pay <strong>the</strong> expenses <strong>of</strong> members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> teaching staff and Graduate Students working in <strong>the</strong> Cavendish<br />
Laboratory who wish to visit o<strong>the</strong>r laboratories or attend scientific conference in connection with <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
work.<br />
Prizes.<br />
BAE SYSTEMS NEVILL MOTT PRIZES<br />
1. The sum made available annually by BAE SYSTEMS in recognition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> contribution to<br />
Semiconductor Physics made by Sir Nevill Mott, CH, FRS, formerly Cavendish Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Experimental<br />
Physics, shall be used to provide two BAE SYSTEMS Nevill Mott Prizes.
