3. The Electors to <strong>the</strong> Studentship shall be three Pr<strong>of</strong>essors assigned to <strong>the</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> History<br />
appointed by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> History not later than <strong>the</strong> division <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Easter Term in each year,<br />
provided that, if <strong>the</strong>y will be available to act, <strong>the</strong> Board shall always appoint <strong>the</strong> Vere Harmsworth<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Imperial and Naval History and <strong>the</strong> Smuts Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Commonwealth History. The<br />
Electors shall have power to co-opt not more than two additional Electors.<br />
If <strong>the</strong> Vere Harmsworth Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Imperial and Naval History is an Elector he or she shall be<br />
Chairman ex <strong>of</strong>ficio; o<strong>the</strong>rwise, <strong>the</strong> Electors shall elect one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>mselves to be Chairman.<br />
4. Any person who satisfies <strong>the</strong> following conditions may be a candidate for <strong>the</strong> Studentship:<br />
(a) a candidate shall be a citizen <strong>of</strong> a Commonwealth country, or <strong>of</strong> a country which was in<br />
membership <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> British Empire or Commonwealth in 1932;<br />
(b) a candidate shall have graduated in any university with high honours in History, or in some<br />
o<strong>the</strong>r subject held by <strong>the</strong> Electors to be relevant to <strong>the</strong> subject <strong>of</strong> study proposed by <strong>the</strong> candidate;<br />
(c) a candidate ei<strong>the</strong>r shall have received his or her first degree at any university not earlier than<br />
<strong>the</strong> academical year next but three preceding that in which he or she submits an application for<br />
<strong>the</strong> Studentship, or shall have been registered as a Graduate Student for not more than nine<br />
terms on <strong>the</strong> date by which applications are to be sent in;<br />
(d) a candidate shall submit to <strong>the</strong> Electors evidence <strong>of</strong> his or her competence for historical or o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
relevant studies;<br />
(e) a candidate shall promise, if elected, to undertake during <strong>the</strong> tenure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Studentship continuous<br />
and full-time study <strong>of</strong> some subject connected with <strong>the</strong> general history or constitutional, social,<br />
or cultural development <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> British Empire since 1815, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Commonwealth, or <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
present problems <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Commonwealth, such subject to be approved by <strong>the</strong> Electors.<br />
5. Preference shall be given to a student who intends to prepare for a career in <strong>the</strong> service <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Commonwealth or <strong>of</strong> any Commonwealth country.<br />
6. The Studentship shall be tenable for one academical year, but a Student in <strong>the</strong> first year <strong>of</strong> tenure<br />
may compete for re-election for a second year.<br />
7. The stipend <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Studentship shall be such sum as shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Electors within<br />
a range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council. In determining <strong>the</strong> sum <strong>the</strong> Electors shall take<br />
into consideration <strong>the</strong> financial circumstances <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> successful candidate. The stipend shall be paid in<br />
half-yearly instalments in advance; provided that <strong>the</strong> Electors may withhold <strong>the</strong> second instalment if<br />
<strong>the</strong>y are not satisfied that <strong>the</strong> Student has been pursuing his or her studies with sufficient diligence.<br />
8. The Studentship shall be <strong>of</strong>fered for competition in <strong>the</strong> Easter Term <strong>of</strong> each academical year.<br />
The Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> History shall issue a Notice to candidates before <strong>the</strong> division<br />
<strong>of</strong> each such term; candidates shall send in <strong>the</strong>ir applications before <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> Full Term, and <strong>the</strong><br />
award shall be made before <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> June.<br />
9. Tenure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Studentship shall begin with <strong>the</strong> academical year after election; provided that <strong>the</strong><br />
Electors may at or after an election allow a Student to postpone <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> tenure for not more<br />
than one year.<br />
10. The Student, if not a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>, must become such before <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> term<br />
next after election and remain such during tenure. In making his gift <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Studentship <strong>the</strong> donor<br />
expressed <strong>the</strong> hope that <strong>the</strong> candidate elected might become a member <strong>of</strong> Christ’s College, if not<br />
already a member <strong>of</strong> a College, and if approved by <strong>the</strong> College; also that he or she might remain a<br />
member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> College during <strong>the</strong> tenure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Studentship.<br />
11. If in any year <strong>the</strong> Electors consider that a second Studentship should be awarded <strong>the</strong>y may make<br />
such an award, and <strong>the</strong> provisions <strong>of</strong> Regulations 3–10 shall apply to <strong>the</strong> second Studentship and its<br />
holder.<br />
12. After provision has been made for <strong>the</strong> Studentship or for Studentships in accordance with <strong>the</strong><br />
foregoing Regulations 1–11 any unexpended income accumulated in <strong>the</strong> Fund may be applied from<br />
time to time at <strong>the</strong> discretion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Electors and subject to such conditions as <strong>the</strong>y may think fit for<br />
<strong>the</strong> purposes <strong>of</strong> making grants to Graduate Students in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> for <strong>the</strong> encouragement <strong>of</strong> study<br />
in any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fields specified in Regulation 4(d).<br />
13. These regulations may be altered by Grace, provided that Dr Rose’s gift shall always be used<br />
to maintain a Studentship for <strong>the</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>rance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> studies mentioned in Regulation 1.<br />
