(c) to purchase books for <strong>the</strong> library <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> Divinity;<br />

(d) to assist in any o<strong>the</strong>r way <strong>the</strong> promotion and encouragement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ological studies in <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong>.<br />

5. Any student engaged in <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ology in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> may apply for a grant under<br />

Regulation 4(a). Before <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term each year <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board shall give public<br />

notice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> date by which, and <strong>the</strong> manner in which, applications for grants are to be made. Each<br />

application shall be accompanied by a statement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> applicant’s financial circumstances. No grant<br />

shall be paid to any student until four terms have passed after his or her first term <strong>of</strong> residence.<br />

6. Grants made under Regulation 4(a) shall be payable ei<strong>the</strong>r in full or in instalments, as determined<br />

by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board. Instalments shall be paid in advance, provided that <strong>the</strong> Board may postpone or<br />

disallow any payment if <strong>the</strong>y are <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> opinion that a student is not diligently pursuing his or her<br />

course <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ological study.<br />

7. The Faculty Board shall have power to appoint from time to time a visiting lecturer who shall<br />

deliver during Full Term one or more lectures on a subject or subjects in <strong>the</strong>ological studies. A visiting<br />

lecturer shall receive such stipend as may be approved by <strong>the</strong> General Board on <strong>the</strong> recommendation<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board, toge<strong>the</strong>r with such payment for expenses as shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> General<br />

Board on <strong>the</strong> same recommendation.<br />

8. The income and accumulated income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Barnard Randolph Fund may be applied, at <strong>the</strong><br />

discretion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board or <strong>of</strong> any Committee appointed under Regulation 1, for <strong>the</strong> provision<br />

<strong>of</strong> one or more Barnard Randolph Exhibitions to be held by graduates <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> in need <strong>of</strong><br />

financial assistance to enable <strong>the</strong>m to study <strong>the</strong>ology in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>, and for <strong>the</strong> provision <strong>of</strong> grants<br />

to enable students in need <strong>of</strong> financial assistance to engage in <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ology in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

or elsewhere.<br />

J. M. THODAY FUND<br />

1. The sums subscribed to mark <strong>the</strong> retirement in 1983 <strong>of</strong> John Marion Thoday, Sc.D., <strong>of</strong> Emmanuel<br />

College, from <strong>the</strong> Arthur Balfour Pr<strong>of</strong>essorship <strong>of</strong> Genetics, shall form a fund called <strong>the</strong> J. M. Thoday<br />

Fund for <strong>the</strong> encouragement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> Genetics in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>.<br />

2. The Fund shall be used to provide a J. M. Thoday Prize for Genetics. The value <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prize shall<br />

be <strong>the</strong> annual income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund.<br />

3. The Prize shall be awarded each year by <strong>the</strong> Examiners for Genetics in Part II <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Natural<br />

Sciences Tripos to <strong>the</strong> candidate who shows <strong>the</strong> greatest distinction in <strong>the</strong> subject Genetics in that<br />

examination.<br />

HENRY ARTHUR THOMAS FUND<br />

1. The money received from <strong>the</strong> bequest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late Henry Arthur Thomas shall constitute a fund,<br />

called <strong>the</strong> Henry Arthur Thomas Fund, for <strong>the</strong> advancement <strong>of</strong> classical learning.<br />

2. The income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be used to provide Scholarships open to all members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong>.<br />

3. The income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be administered by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Classics, who may delegate<br />

any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir functions concerning <strong>the</strong> Fund to a Committee not necessarily composed wholly <strong>of</strong><br />

members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Board.<br />

4. Subject to <strong>the</strong> foregoing provisions <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> shall have power, on <strong>the</strong> recommendation <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Classics, to make regulations for carrying out <strong>the</strong> objects <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund, and to<br />

vary such regulations from time to time. 1<br />

5. The income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be used to support:<br />

(a) one Henry Arthur Thomas Studentship;<br />

(b) Henry Arthur Thomas Prizes;<br />

(c) Henry Arthur Thomas Travel Exhibitions.<br />

6. Any unexpended income accumulated in <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be applied from time to time at <strong>the</strong><br />

discretion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Classics and subject to such conditions as <strong>the</strong>y may think fit for<br />

(a) <strong>the</strong> provision <strong>of</strong> Travel Exhibitions in accordance with <strong>the</strong> provisions <strong>of</strong> Regulations 15–19 <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>se regulations;<br />

(b) <strong>the</strong> advancement <strong>of</strong> classical learning by any o<strong>the</strong>r means.<br />
