Term next following <strong>the</strong> announcement; <strong>the</strong> Registrary shall submit <strong>the</strong> proposed subject to <strong>the</strong><br />

Adjudicators and shall communicate <strong>the</strong> approval or rejection <strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong> to <strong>the</strong> candidate.<br />

5. An essay for <strong>the</strong> Prize shall meet <strong>the</strong> minimum and maximum word limits as prescribed by <strong>the</strong><br />

Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> English in <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term each year. Each essay shall be printed or typewritten<br />

and, with a declaration <strong>of</strong> its length, shall be sent to <strong>the</strong> Registrary so as to arrive not later than 31<br />

August in <strong>the</strong> calendar year next following <strong>the</strong> announcement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> selected subject. It shall bear a<br />

motto but not <strong>the</strong> candidate’s name, and shall be accompanied by a sealed envelope bearing <strong>the</strong> same<br />

motto outside and containing <strong>the</strong> candidate’s name and College.<br />

6. The successful candidate shall send a printed or typewritten copy <strong>of</strong> his or her essay to <strong>the</strong> Vice-<br />

Chancellor, to each Adjudicator, to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> Library, and to <strong>the</strong> Library <strong>of</strong> Christ’s College.<br />

7. If on any occasion <strong>the</strong> Adjudicators shall be <strong>of</strong> opinion that no essay sent in is deserving <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Prize, <strong>the</strong> amount <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prize for that occasion shall be added to <strong>the</strong> capital <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund.<br />

8. The <strong>University</strong> shall have power to alter and determine from time to time, by Grace, <strong>the</strong> regulations<br />

respecting <strong>the</strong> persons by whom <strong>the</strong> subject <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> essay shall be chosen and <strong>the</strong> Prize adjudged, and<br />

also <strong>the</strong> regulations respecting <strong>the</strong> intervals at which <strong>the</strong> Prize shall be <strong>of</strong>fered and <strong>the</strong> times when <strong>the</strong><br />

subject shall be announced and <strong>the</strong> essays sent in.<br />

HARNETT FUND<br />

1. The bequest <strong>of</strong> Lt-Colonel W. L. Harnett shall form a fund called <strong>the</strong> Harnett Fund, which shall<br />

in accordance with <strong>the</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Will <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> benefactor be used for increasing medical knowledge<br />

and aiding medical research.<br />

2. The capital and <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be applied as <strong>the</strong> General Board shall from time to<br />

time determine after consultation with <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Clinical Medicine.<br />

HARTREE AND CLERK MAXWELL PRIZES<br />

1. The sum bequea<strong>the</strong>d to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> by Douglas Rayner Hartree, M.A., Ph.D., <strong>of</strong> Christ’s<br />

College, formerly John Humphrey Plummer Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matical Physics, shall form a fund<br />

called <strong>the</strong> Hartree Fund.<br />

2. The income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be used to provide a prize called <strong>the</strong> Hartree Prize which shall be<br />

awarded annually by <strong>the</strong> Examiners for Part II <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Natural Sciences Tripos to <strong>the</strong> candidate who<br />

has shown <strong>the</strong> greatest distinction in Experimental and Theoretical Physics in that examination.<br />

3. The Examiners shall be empowered at <strong>the</strong>ir discretion to award a Clerk Maxwell Prize to any<br />

winner <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hartree Prize. The value <strong>of</strong> a Clerk Maxwell Prize shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Cavendish<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Physics and <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Physics acting in conjunction; such a Prize<br />

shall be provided from <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Clerk Maxwell Memorial Fund, under Regulation 2(c) for<br />

that fund, and from <strong>the</strong> funds at <strong>the</strong> disposal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Physics.<br />

HARTWELL FUND FOR ISLAMIC STUDIES<br />

Amended by Grace 3 <strong>of</strong> 13 March 2013<br />

1. The sum given to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> by <strong>the</strong> Oakhill Group Ltd shall form a fund called <strong>the</strong> Hartwell<br />

Fund for Islamic Studies, <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> which shall be used for <strong>the</strong> advancement <strong>of</strong> Islamic Studies<br />

in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>.<br />

2. The Fund shall be administered by a Board <strong>of</strong> Managers, who shall be:<br />

(a) <strong>the</strong> Vice-Chancellor (or a duly appointed deputy) as Chairman;<br />

(b) <strong>the</strong> Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Divinity;<br />

(c) a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Divinity appointed by that Board;<br />

(d) two persons appointed by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Divinity on <strong>the</strong> nomination <strong>of</strong> Hartwell plc.<br />

Managers in class (d) shall be appointed in <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term to serve for four years from 1 January<br />

following <strong>the</strong>ir appointment.<br />

3. The Managers shall meet at least once a year.<br />

4. It shall be <strong>the</strong> duty <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers:<br />

(a) to keep <strong>the</strong> financial position <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund under review;<br />
