under <strong>the</strong> regulations for <strong>the</strong> Ph.D., M.Sc., and M.Litt. Degrees to an Examiner who reports on a<br />
dissertation and takes part in an oral examination.<br />
10. The Registrary shall communicate to each candidate <strong>the</strong> approval or rejection <strong>of</strong> his or her<br />
proposed subject by <strong>the</strong> Managers.<br />
11. A dissertation shall not exceed 100,000 words in length. Each dissertation, with a declaration<br />
<strong>of</strong> its length, shall be sent to <strong>the</strong> Registrary in printed or typewritten form not later than 31 October.<br />
12. Each Prize shall be awarded not later than 1 March. In announcing <strong>the</strong> award <strong>the</strong> Adjudicators<br />
may also commend dissertations submitted by o<strong>the</strong>r candidates as deserving <strong>of</strong> publication.<br />
13. The successful candidate shall deposit a printed or typewritten copy <strong>of</strong> his or her dissertation in<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> Library.<br />
14. Any unexpended income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be carried to a Reserve Fund, which shall be available<br />
for <strong>the</strong> purposes specified in Regulation 15. Any unexpended income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Reserve Fund in any year<br />
shall be accumulated for use as income in subsequent years.<br />
15. The Managers shall have power to use <strong>the</strong> Reserve Fund for <strong>the</strong> following purposes:<br />
(a) To make grants towards <strong>the</strong> cost <strong>of</strong> publication <strong>of</strong> any works for which a Prince Consort Prize<br />
or a Thirlwall Prize has been awarded or which have been commended by <strong>the</strong> Adjudicators.<br />
(b) To provide one or more studentships, to be called Prince Consort Studentships or Thirlwall<br />
Studentships, <strong>the</strong> holders <strong>of</strong> which shall devote <strong>the</strong>mselves to original research in History. The<br />
Electors to <strong>the</strong> Studentships shall be <strong>the</strong> Managers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund who, on each occasion when<br />
<strong>the</strong>y intend to proceed to an election, shall announce <strong>the</strong> date by which applications must be<br />
received and <strong>the</strong> manner in which <strong>the</strong>y must be submitted. A Studentship shall be open to any<br />
person who is or is about to be registered as a Graduate Student in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>. A Studentship<br />
shall be awarded for one year in <strong>the</strong> first instance and may be renewed for a period <strong>of</strong> one year<br />
at a time, subject to a maximum tenure <strong>of</strong> three years. The stipend <strong>of</strong> a Student shall be such<br />
sum as shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Managers within a range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong><br />
Council.<br />
(c) To make grants to Graduate Students or to graduates <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> in aid <strong>of</strong> historical<br />
research.<br />
(d) To fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> History in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> by any o<strong>the</strong>r means.<br />

EDWARD S. PRIOR FUND<br />
1. The sum received from friends and pupils <strong>of</strong> Edward Schröder Prior, Slade Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Fine Art<br />
from 1915 to 1932, shall constitute a trust fund called <strong>the</strong> Edward S. Prior Fund.<br />
2. In each year <strong>the</strong>re shall be a prize, called <strong>the</strong> Edward S. Prior Prize, <strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong> which shall be<br />
<strong>the</strong> annual income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund.<br />
3. Candidates for <strong>the</strong> Prize shall be students <strong>of</strong> Architecture who have completed <strong>the</strong> studio-work<br />
for Parts IB and II <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Architecture Tripos.<br />
4. In <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term <strong>of</strong> each year <strong>the</strong> Registrary shall publish a Notice to competitors for <strong>the</strong><br />
Prize.<br />
5. Each candidate shall submit a portfolio <strong>of</strong> drawings which he or she has made since becoming a<br />
candidate for <strong>the</strong> Architecture Tripos, and <strong>the</strong> Prize shall be awarded to <strong>the</strong> candidate whose drawings<br />
show <strong>the</strong> best understanding <strong>of</strong> building construction and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> materials.<br />
6. The portfolios shall be sent to <strong>the</strong> Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Architecture and History <strong>of</strong><br />
Art not later than <strong>the</strong> first day <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> examination for Part II <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Architecture Tripos in <strong>the</strong> year in<br />
which <strong>the</strong> Prize is to be awarded.<br />
7. The Prize shall be awarded by three honorary Awarders nominated by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board before<br />
<strong>the</strong> division <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Easter Term and appointed by <strong>the</strong> General Board. It shall be awarded before <strong>the</strong><br />
end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Easter Term.<br />

L. P. PUGH MEDAL<br />
1. The sums subscribed in memory <strong>of</strong> Leslie Penrys Pugh, <strong>of</strong> Magdalene College, formerly Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />
<strong>of</strong> Veterinary Clinical Studies, shall form a fund called <strong>the</strong> L. P. Pugh Fund, <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> which shall<br />
be used to provide a medal for distinguished work in clinical veterinary medicine.
