5. The Managers shall take such steps as <strong>the</strong>y think fit to enquire into <strong>the</strong> qualifications <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

candidates, provided that no Studentship shall be awarded on <strong>the</strong> result <strong>of</strong> a competitive examination.<br />

6. Any candidate for <strong>the</strong> M.Phil. Degree in <strong>the</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> Classics will be deemed to be an applicant<br />

for <strong>the</strong> Studentships. An election will be held at a date to be determined by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board no later<br />

than 30 September immediately preceding <strong>the</strong> first term <strong>of</strong> study. The name <strong>of</strong> each successful candidate<br />

will be published in <strong>the</strong> Reporter.<br />

7. Each Studentship shall be tenable from <strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> commencement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term<br />

next following <strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> election until 30 September next following such date. No student shall<br />

be eligible for re-election.<br />

8. The emolument <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Studentship shall be such sum, not exceeding <strong>the</strong> available income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Fund, as shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Managers within a range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong><br />

Council. The emolument shall be paid in such instalments as <strong>the</strong> Managers shall from time to time<br />

determine, provided that <strong>the</strong> Managers may withhold payment <strong>of</strong> any instalment if <strong>the</strong>y are not satisfied<br />

that a Student is pursuing his or her course <strong>of</strong> study with sufficient diligence.<br />

9. Any unexpended income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund in any year (whe<strong>the</strong>r because <strong>the</strong>re is no candidate in that<br />

year who merits an award, or for any o<strong>the</strong>r reason) shall be carried forward for expenditure in<br />

subsequent years.<br />

10. These regulations may be amended by Grace, so long as <strong>the</strong> main object <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund, as defined<br />

in Regulations 1, 3, and 4 above, shall always be kept in view.<br />

DAVID SEXTON FUND<br />

1. The investments representing <strong>the</strong> sums given by his family and friends in memory <strong>of</strong> David<br />

James Sexton, <strong>of</strong> Emmanuel College, research student in <strong>the</strong> Scott Polar Research Institute, who was<br />

killed on 16 August 1989 on South Inyl’chek Glacier in <strong>the</strong> Tien Shan Mountains, at that time part <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Soviet Union, shall form a fund called <strong>the</strong> David Sexton Fund, for <strong>the</strong> advancement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> study<br />

<strong>of</strong> scientific and environmental aspects <strong>of</strong> polar and mountainous regions and <strong>the</strong> conservation <strong>of</strong> such<br />

areas.<br />

2. The income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund and any unexpended income accumulated in <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be available<br />

at <strong>the</strong> discretion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scott Polar Research Institute for <strong>the</strong> purchase <strong>of</strong> books on<br />

topics relevant to <strong>the</strong> fields mentioned in Regulation 1 for <strong>the</strong> library <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute.<br />

MARMADUKE SHEILD FUND<br />

1. The sum bequea<strong>the</strong>d to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> by <strong>the</strong> late Arthur Marmaduke Sheild, <strong>of</strong> Downing College,<br />

who died on 4 August 1922, shall form a fund called <strong>the</strong> Marmaduke Sheild Fund which shall be<br />

applied in accordance with <strong>the</strong> wishes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> donor as stated in his Will as follows:<br />

I GIVE <strong>the</strong> remainder <strong>of</strong> my residuary trust fund…to <strong>the</strong> Medical School <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cambridge</strong> to<br />

be applied as follows:<br />

FIRST for <strong>the</strong> foundation <strong>of</strong> a Scholarship in Human Anatomy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong> One hundred pounds to be<br />

called <strong>the</strong> Marmaduke Sheild Scholarship and<br />

SECONDLY for <strong>the</strong> general purposes and benefit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> said Medical School and <strong>the</strong> terms and conditions <strong>of</strong><br />

such Scholarship and <strong>the</strong> general purposes for which <strong>the</strong> remainder <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> residuary trust fund is to be applied<br />

shall be determined in such manner in every respect as <strong>the</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> Medical Studies <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cambridge</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

shall direct.<br />

For <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> fulfilling those conditions <strong>the</strong> ‘Medical School <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cambridge</strong>’<br />

shall be deemed to consist <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculties <strong>of</strong> Biology and Clinical Medicine.<br />

2. The Managers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be (a) <strong>the</strong> Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Biology, (b) <strong>the</strong><br />

Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Clinical Medicine, (c) two members appointed by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board<br />

<strong>of</strong> Biology, (d) two members appointed by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Clinical Medicine. The members in<br />

classes (c) and (d) shall be appointed to serve for three years from 1 January following <strong>the</strong>ir appointment.<br />

The Chairmanship <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers shall be held alternately by <strong>the</strong> member in class (a) and by <strong>the</strong><br />

member in class (b), each for one year at a time. The Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> School <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Biological Sciences<br />

shall act as Secretary to <strong>the</strong> Managers.<br />

3. After provision has been made for <strong>the</strong> Marmaduke Sheild Scholarship, <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund<br />

shall be applied from time to time at <strong>the</strong> discretion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers and, subject to such conditions as<br />

<strong>the</strong>y may decide, for any purpose consistent with <strong>the</strong> benefactor’s wishes as indicated in Regulation 1.<br />
