for <strong>the</strong> election <strong>of</strong> a Research Fellow shall be valid unless passed by at least four <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers at<br />
a meeting to which all <strong>the</strong> Managers have been summoned, provided that<br />
(a) if <strong>the</strong> Pitt Pr<strong>of</strong>essor is a Manager, <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> votes required shall be increased by one;<br />
(b) if ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> Regius Pr<strong>of</strong>essor or <strong>the</strong> Paul Mellon Pr<strong>of</strong>essor is Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board,<br />
<strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> votes required shall be reduced by one.<br />
3. The first charge on <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be <strong>the</strong> stipends <strong>of</strong> one or more Mellon Research Fellows who<br />
shall engage in original research in American history which for this purpose shall be defined as <strong>the</strong><br />
history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> United States <strong>of</strong> America from its colonial beginnings.<br />
4. The Managers shall publish before <strong>the</strong> division <strong>of</strong> each Lent Term a Notice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> date by which<br />
applications for a Mellon Research Fellowship shall be submitted to <strong>the</strong>m, and <strong>the</strong> manner in which<br />
such applications shall be made. The names <strong>of</strong> successful candidates shall be published not later than<br />
30 June next following.<br />
5. A Mellon Research Fellowship shall be tenable for a minimum period <strong>of</strong> one year, which may<br />
be extended by <strong>the</strong> Managers, provided that <strong>the</strong> tenure <strong>of</strong> a Fellowship shall not exceed four years in<br />
all.<br />
6. The stipend <strong>of</strong> a Mellon Research Fellow shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> General Board on <strong>the</strong><br />
recommendation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers.<br />
7. After provision has been made for <strong>the</strong> Mellon Research Fellowships <strong>the</strong> Managers shall be<br />
empowered to make grants to visiting scholars, Graduate Students, or o<strong>the</strong>r members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />
not in statu pupillari, for <strong>the</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>rance <strong>of</strong> research in American history as defined in Regulation 3.<br />
8. Any unexpended income may be added ei<strong>the</strong>r to <strong>the</strong> capital <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund or accumulated for use<br />
as income in subsequent years as <strong>the</strong> Managers may determine.<br />

PAUL MELLON FUND<br />
1. The moneys received by <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> under <strong>the</strong> Will <strong>of</strong> Paul Mellon, Hon. K.B.E., M.A., Hon.<br />
LL.D., <strong>of</strong> Clare College, shall form a fund called <strong>the</strong> Paul Mellon Fund.<br />
2. The Managers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be <strong>the</strong> Fitzwilliam Museum Syndicate.<br />
3. The capital and income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be available, at <strong>the</strong> discretion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers for any<br />
purpose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Museum, including:<br />
(a) <strong>the</strong> provision <strong>of</strong> buildings, or <strong>the</strong> improvement <strong>of</strong> buildings;<br />
(b) <strong>the</strong> preservation and maintenance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> collections including <strong>the</strong> employment <strong>of</strong> curatorial staff<br />
for that purpose.<br />

PAUL MELLON DISCRETIONARY FUND<br />
1. The moneys received by <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> at <strong>the</strong> discretion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Executors <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Will <strong>of</strong> Paul<br />
Mellon, Hon. K.B.E., M.A., Hon. LL.D. <strong>of</strong> Clare College shall form a fund called <strong>the</strong> Paul Mellon<br />
Discretionary Fund.<br />
2. The Managers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be <strong>the</strong> Fitzwilliam Museum Syndicate, acting on <strong>the</strong><br />
recommendations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Museum with <strong>the</strong> concurrence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Executors and <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
successors.<br />
3. The income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be available for <strong>the</strong> following purposes:<br />
(a) <strong>the</strong> planning and implementation <strong>of</strong> temporary exhibitions at <strong>the</strong> Museum, especially those that<br />
draw upon <strong>the</strong> permanent collections <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> and <strong>the</strong> Colleges <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>;<br />
(b) <strong>the</strong> production costs <strong>of</strong> publications for or by <strong>the</strong> Museum, especially those relating to its<br />
collections;<br />
(c) educational programmes planned and implemented at <strong>the</strong> Museum, to encourage wider participation<br />
and appreciation <strong>of</strong> its collections; and<br />
(d) refurbishing galleries used to display <strong>the</strong> permanent collection, to include such non-structural<br />
elements as wall coverings, display furniture, and light fittings, to ensure that high standards are<br />
maintained in <strong>the</strong> appearance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> galleries and <strong>the</strong> display <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir contents.
