The Managers in class (a) shall be appointed in <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term for a period <strong>of</strong> three years from<br />

1 January following <strong>the</strong>ir appointment.<br />

3. The income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be applied at <strong>the</strong> discretion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers:<br />

(a) to provide <strong>the</strong> stipend, national insurance, and pension contributions <strong>of</strong> a Herchel Smith Fellow<br />

who shall conduct research in <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> medicinal chemistry for at least one year. The<br />

Fellowship shall be tenable for not more than two years. The annual stipend <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fellow shall<br />

be determined by <strong>the</strong> Managers;<br />

(b) to provide Studentships for persons who are, or are about to be, registered for <strong>the</strong> Ph.D. Degree<br />

in <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> medicinal chemistry. A Studentship shall be tenable for one year in <strong>the</strong> first<br />

instance and a Student may be eligible for re-election <strong>the</strong>reafter for not more than three fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />

years.<br />

4. In <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term each year <strong>the</strong> Managers shall publish a notice giving <strong>the</strong> date by which,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> manner in which, applications are to be submitted.<br />

5. In any books, papers, or o<strong>the</strong>r publications containing <strong>the</strong> results <strong>of</strong> investigations carried out<br />

during <strong>the</strong> tenure <strong>of</strong> a Fellowship or Studentship, <strong>the</strong> title <strong>of</strong> Herchel Smith Fellow or Student shall be<br />

used wherever practicable.<br />

6. Any unexpended income in a financial year shall ei<strong>the</strong>r be added to <strong>the</strong> capital <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund or<br />

accumulated for use as income in future years, as <strong>the</strong> Managers may determine.<br />

HERCHEL SMITH RESEARCH STUDENTSHIP AND RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP FUND<br />

Grace 2 <strong>of</strong> 5 March 2008<br />

1. The sums received from Harvard <strong>University</strong>, in accordance with <strong>the</strong> bequest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late Dr Herchel<br />

Smith, shall form a fund called <strong>the</strong> Herchel Smith Research Studentship and Research Fellowship<br />

Fund, which shall be used for <strong>the</strong> promotion and encouragement <strong>of</strong> research in Biochemistry, Molecular<br />

Biology, and Organic Chemistry, and related fields.<br />

2. The Fund shall be managed by a Committee <strong>of</strong> Managers which shall comprise five persons<br />

appointed by <strong>the</strong> General Board after consultation with <strong>the</strong> Councils <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Schools <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Biological<br />

Sciences and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Physical Sciences. Members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Committee shall serve for four years from<br />

1 January following <strong>the</strong>ir appointment.<br />

3. The Committee shall meet at least once a year and shall meet periodically with a Harvard<br />

<strong>University</strong> Herchel Smith Advisory Committee to determine <strong>the</strong> field or fields in which awards shall<br />

be made and o<strong>the</strong>r matters <strong>of</strong> common interest which fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> intentions <strong>of</strong> Dr Herchel Smith in<br />

seeking to enhance collaboration between <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> and Harvard <strong>University</strong>.<br />

4. The Fund shall be used to provide support for such number <strong>of</strong> Herchel Smith Research Studentships<br />

and Herchel Smith Research Fellowships in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> as <strong>the</strong> Committee shall determine. In order<br />

to be eligible for a Studentship, a candidate must have been accepted to follow a course <strong>of</strong> research<br />

within <strong>the</strong> field(s) in which <strong>the</strong> Studentships have been advertised and have been admitted, or be<br />

seeking admission, by <strong>the</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> Graduate Studies as a registered Graduate Student <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> Fellows, not more than three years shall have elapsed between <strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong> completion<br />

<strong>of</strong> a Ph.D. Degree at ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> or Harvard <strong>University</strong> and <strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong> appointment.<br />

5. The value <strong>of</strong> Studentships and Fellowships shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Committee in consultation<br />

with <strong>the</strong> Harvard <strong>University</strong> Herchel Smith Advisory Committee, after taking account in <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong><br />

Studentships <strong>of</strong> any o<strong>the</strong>r financial resources that may be available. The stipend received by a Student<br />

shall normally comprise <strong>University</strong> and College fees, a sum for maintenance, and a contribution to<br />

departmental expenses.<br />

6. A Studentship or Fellowship shall be tenable for one or more years, as <strong>the</strong> Committee shall<br />

determine in each case; a Studentship may, at <strong>the</strong> discretion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Committee, be extended.<br />

7. The Managers shall make grants from <strong>the</strong> Fund to cover <strong>the</strong> expenses incurred <strong>of</strong> any colloquia,<br />

conference or o<strong>the</strong>r arrangement with Harvard <strong>University</strong> which supports Herchel Smith Research<br />

Students and Fellows in <strong>the</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>rance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir research and <strong>the</strong> administration costs <strong>of</strong> making <strong>the</strong><br />

awards.<br />

8. In any books, papers, or o<strong>the</strong>r publications containing <strong>the</strong> results <strong>of</strong> investigations carried out<br />

during <strong>the</strong> tenure <strong>of</strong> a Studentship, or Fellowship, <strong>the</strong> title ‘Herchel Smith Research Student’ or<br />

‘Herchel Smith Research Fellow’ shall be used wherever practicable.<br />
