3. The income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be applied at <strong>the</strong> discretion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers<br />

(a) to provide an annual Prize to be called <strong>the</strong> Chinese Studies Prize, <strong>of</strong> a value determined by <strong>the</strong><br />

Managers within a range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council, and to be awarded by <strong>the</strong><br />

Examiners for any Part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Asian and Middle Eastern Studies Tripos for distinguished work<br />

shown in <strong>the</strong> Chinese Studies papers;<br />

(b) to advance Chinese Studies in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> by any o<strong>the</strong>r means (including <strong>the</strong> making <strong>of</strong><br />

contributions towards <strong>the</strong> travelling expenses <strong>of</strong> members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>, and towards <strong>the</strong><br />

expenses <strong>of</strong> scholars in Chinese Studies when visiting <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>).<br />

income.<br />

CHUAN LYU FELLOWSHIP AND SENIOR VISITING SCHOLARSHIP FUND<br />

1. The sum received by <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> from <strong>the</strong> Chuan Lyu Foundation shall form a fund, called<br />

<strong>the</strong> Chuan Lyu Fellowship and Senior Visiting Scholarship Fund, <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> which shall be used<br />

for <strong>the</strong> provision <strong>of</strong> Chuan Lyu Research Fellowships and Senior Visiting Scholarships for <strong>the</strong> support<br />

<strong>of</strong> teaching and research in Taiwanese Studies.<br />

2. The Managers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be:<br />

(a) four persons appointed by <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> East Asian Studies in consultation<br />

with and with <strong>the</strong> agreement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> teaching <strong>of</strong>ficers in Chinese in <strong>the</strong> Department, one <strong>of</strong> whom<br />

shall be a Pr<strong>of</strong>essor in <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> Chinese Studies;<br />

(b) one person appointed by <strong>the</strong> Chuan Lyu Foundation.<br />

The Managers in class (a) shall be appointed in <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term to serve for one year from<br />

1 January following <strong>the</strong>ir appointment.<br />

3. The income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be applied at <strong>the</strong> discretion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers<br />

(a) to provide <strong>the</strong> stipend, national insurance, and pension contributions <strong>of</strong> a Chuan Lyu Research<br />

Fellow who shall engage in teaching and research in <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> Taiwanese Studies;<br />

(b) to provide <strong>the</strong> subsistence allowance and travel costs <strong>of</strong> a Chuan Lyu Senior Visiting Scholar<br />

who shall <strong>of</strong>fer lectures and engage in research in his or her area <strong>of</strong> expertise within <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong><br />

Taiwanese Studies.<br />

4. The Managers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall select <strong>the</strong> Chuan Lyu Research Fellow, taking account <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

candidates’ written research proposals. In considering any extension to <strong>the</strong> Fellow’s original tenure,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Managers shall take account <strong>of</strong> progress made in <strong>the</strong> light <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> original research proposal.<br />

5. The Managers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall have power to determine from time to time <strong>the</strong> period <strong>of</strong> tenure<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chuan Lyu Research Fellowship and <strong>the</strong> stipend to be attached to each period <strong>of</strong> tenure, within<br />

a range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong> General Board.<br />

6. The Managers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund may terminate a Fellowship at any time if <strong>the</strong>y are not satisfied that<br />

<strong>the</strong> Fellow is diligently fulfilling his or her duties.<br />

7. The Managers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall have power to determine from time to time <strong>the</strong> period <strong>of</strong><br />

invitation <strong>of</strong> a Chuan Lyu Senior Visiting Scholar and <strong>the</strong> level <strong>of</strong> subsistence allowance to be <strong>of</strong>fered.<br />

8. Any unexpended income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund in a financial year may be added ei<strong>the</strong>r to <strong>the</strong> capital <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Fund or accumulated for use as income in subsequent years as <strong>the</strong> Managers may determine in<br />

support <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> purposes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund as set out in Regulation 1.<br />

CHUAN LYU L ECTURESHIP FUND<br />

1. The sums given to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> by <strong>the</strong> Chuan Lyu Foundation <strong>of</strong> California shall form a fund<br />

called <strong>the</strong> Chuan Lyu Lectureship Fund. The first charge on <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be <strong>the</strong><br />

honorarium <strong>of</strong> a Chuan Lyu Lecturer.<br />

2. In <strong>the</strong> Easter Term <strong>of</strong> each year <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> East Asian Studies in consultation<br />

with and with <strong>the</strong> agreement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> teaching <strong>of</strong>ficers in Chinese in <strong>the</strong> Department shall ei<strong>the</strong>r appoint<br />

a Lecturer to hold <strong>of</strong>fice for <strong>the</strong> following academical year or defer <strong>the</strong> appointment for one year,<br />

provided that <strong>the</strong> appointment shall not be deferred for two successive years. In making <strong>the</strong> appointment<br />

<strong>the</strong> Faculty Board shall, if possible, select a scholar qualified to lecture on topics in <strong>the</strong> history and<br />

culture <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Taiwanese people.<br />

3. During his or her term <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>the</strong> Lecturer shall give two lectures in Full Term dealing with<br />

some aspect <strong>of</strong> Chinese Studies, which shall be understood to include <strong>the</strong> culture and history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Taiwanese people.<br />
