WHEWELL TRUST FUND AND WHEWELL SCHOLARSHIPS<br />

Application <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Whewell Trust Fund<br />

1. The Whewell Trust Fund consists <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sum paid each year to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> by Trinity College<br />

in pursuance <strong>of</strong> Statute E, XX.<br />

2. There shall be a first charge on <strong>the</strong> Fund <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sum <strong>of</strong> £300 to be paid in each year to <strong>the</strong> Chest<br />

towards <strong>the</strong> stipend <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Whewell Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> International Law.<br />

3. There shall be a second charge on <strong>the</strong> Fund <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sum <strong>of</strong> £200 (or so much <strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong> as is<br />

available) to be paid in each year to a fund called <strong>the</strong> Whewell Scholarship Fund, which shall be used<br />

for <strong>the</strong> provision <strong>of</strong> Whewell Scholarships in International Law, and o<strong>the</strong>rwise as hereinafter provided.<br />

4. If in any year <strong>the</strong> net income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Trust Fund exceeds £500, <strong>the</strong> excess up to a maximum <strong>of</strong><br />

£200 shall be paid to <strong>the</strong> Chest towards <strong>the</strong> stipend <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Whewell Pr<strong>of</strong>essor.<br />

5. If in any year <strong>the</strong> net income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Trust Fund exceeds £700, <strong>the</strong> excess shall be paid to <strong>the</strong><br />

Whewell Scholarship Fund.<br />

6. Any part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Whewell Scholarship Fund which is not paid to Scholars in any year shall be at<br />

<strong>the</strong> disposal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Electors ei<strong>the</strong>r for payments to Scholars in subsequent years or for investment with<br />

a view to making provision for such payments or for <strong>the</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>rance in any o<strong>the</strong>r manner <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> study<br />

<strong>of</strong> International Law: provided that any payment authorized by <strong>the</strong> Electors for purposes o<strong>the</strong>r than<br />

<strong>the</strong> emolument <strong>of</strong> Scholars shall require <strong>the</strong> consent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Law.<br />

The Whewell Scholarships<br />

7. There shall be <strong>of</strong>fered in each year at least one Whewell Scholarship in International Law.<br />

8. The competition for Scholarships shall be open to any member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> who is a<br />

candidate for <strong>the</strong> LL.M. Examination in <strong>the</strong> year <strong>of</strong> candidature for <strong>the</strong> Scholarships, or who satisfied<br />

<strong>the</strong> Examiners in <strong>the</strong> LL.M. Examination in <strong>the</strong> year next preceding <strong>the</strong> year <strong>of</strong> candidature, provided<br />

that no one who has been awarded a Scholarship shall compete on a second occasion.<br />

9. The Electors may award one or more Scholarships, each <strong>of</strong> such value as <strong>the</strong>y may determine,<br />

provided that (a) <strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong> a Scholarship shall not exceed such sum as shall be determined by <strong>the</strong><br />

Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Law within a range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council, and (b) <strong>the</strong> aggregate<br />

value <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scholarships awarded at any one election shall not exceed <strong>the</strong> amount fixed for that<br />

election by <strong>the</strong> Finance Committee <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Council.<br />

10. A Scholarship shall be tenable for one year from 1 October next following <strong>the</strong> election. During<br />

<strong>the</strong> year <strong>of</strong> tenure a Scholar shall have <strong>the</strong> rights defined in Statute E, XX in regard to membership <strong>of</strong><br />

Trinity College and <strong>the</strong> occupation <strong>of</strong> chambers in Whewell’s Courts.<br />

11. The Electors shall be <strong>the</strong> Whewell Pr<strong>of</strong>essor (or a deputy nominated by <strong>the</strong> Whewell Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

and appointed by <strong>the</strong> General Board) as Chairman, and two o<strong>the</strong>r Electors appointed annually by <strong>the</strong><br />

General Board in <strong>the</strong> Lent Term on <strong>the</strong> nomination <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Law. The Electors shall<br />

conduct <strong>the</strong> examination.<br />

12. The examination shall comprise not less than three <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> papers in International Law which<br />

have been prescribed by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Law for <strong>the</strong> LL.M. Examination, a fourth paper chosen<br />

by <strong>the</strong> candidate from among all <strong>the</strong> papers prescribed for that examination, and a paper on problems<br />

and disputed points in International Law.<br />

The Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Law shall announce in <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term each year <strong>the</strong> papers to be set<br />

in <strong>the</strong> examination, and <strong>the</strong> date by which, and <strong>the</strong> manner in which, applications are to be submitted.<br />

The Electors shall make to <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Law any representations which <strong>the</strong>y may consider<br />

desirable from time to time with regard to <strong>the</strong> subjects and date <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> examination.<br />

WHIPPLE MUSEUM OF THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE CONSERVATION FUND<br />

Grace 3 <strong>of</strong> 14 November 2012<br />

1. The gifts received from <strong>the</strong> grandchildren and o<strong>the</strong>r family members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late Mr Robert Stewart<br />

Whipple, and o<strong>the</strong>r gifts received for <strong>the</strong> same purpose, shall form a fund called <strong>the</strong> Whipple Museum<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> History <strong>of</strong> Science Conservation Fund.<br />
