F. S. SALISBURY FUND<br />

1. The gifts <strong>of</strong> Frederick Stimpson Salisbury, M.A., <strong>of</strong> Christ’s College, shall form a fund called<br />

<strong>the</strong> F. S. Salisbury Fund.<br />

2. The Managers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Classics. The Managers may appoint a<br />

Committee, composed <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Laurence Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Classical Archaeology, <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Ancient<br />

History, and not less than two o<strong>the</strong>r members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Classics, to discharge any <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir functions concerning <strong>the</strong> Fund. Applications for grants from <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be made to <strong>the</strong><br />

Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Classics.<br />

3. The income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be applied from time to time at <strong>the</strong> discretion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers,<br />

and subject to such conditions as <strong>the</strong>y may think fit, in making grants to assist members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> in statu pupillari engaged in excavations on Roman sites in Britain.<br />

4. Unexpended income shall not be added to <strong>the</strong> capital <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund, but shall be accumulated for<br />

use as income in subsequent years.<br />

HAROLD SAMUEL STUDENTSHIPS<br />

1. The Harold Samuel Studentships shall be for <strong>the</strong> encouragement <strong>of</strong> research in economic, legal,<br />

or social matters relating to <strong>the</strong> use, tenure, or development <strong>of</strong> land.<br />

2. Within <strong>the</strong> limit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> funds provided for <strong>the</strong> purpose by <strong>the</strong> Managers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Estate Management<br />

Development Fund <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> Studentships to be <strong>of</strong>fered annually shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Board<br />

<strong>of</strong> Land Economy.<br />

3. Not later than 30 November in <strong>the</strong> calendar year preceding that in which an election is to be<br />

held <strong>the</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> Land Economy shall announce <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> Studentships <strong>of</strong>fered, and <strong>the</strong> date by<br />

which, and <strong>the</strong> manner in which, applications for a Studentship are to be made.<br />

4. The Electors to <strong>the</strong> Studentships shall be <strong>the</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> Land Economy, or a committee appointed<br />

by that Board.<br />

5. Elections shall take place not later than <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Long Vacation period <strong>of</strong> residence in any<br />

year.<br />

6. The annual value <strong>of</strong> a Studentship shall be such sum as may be determined by <strong>the</strong> Board in<br />

consultation with <strong>the</strong> Managers subject to a maximum approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council. In<br />

addition <strong>the</strong> Student shall receive from <strong>the</strong> Fund such sum as may be approved by <strong>the</strong> Board to meet<br />

<strong>University</strong> and College fees. In deciding <strong>the</strong> amount to be paid to each Student <strong>the</strong> Board shall take<br />

into account any financial assistance which he or she is receiving from any o<strong>the</strong>r sources.<br />

7. Candidature for <strong>the</strong> Studentships shall be open, but tenure shall be conditional upon <strong>the</strong> Student<br />

being a registered Graduate Student <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>. If <strong>the</strong> holder ceases to be a registered Graduate<br />

Student his or her tenure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Studentship shall <strong>the</strong>reupon lapse.<br />

8. The Student shall be required to pursue to <strong>the</strong> satisfaction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Board a course <strong>of</strong> training in<br />

research approved by <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

9. Subject to <strong>the</strong> provisions <strong>of</strong> Regulation 7, a Studentship shall be tenable for two years, and may<br />

at <strong>the</strong> discretion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Board be extended for one more year.<br />

10. Payments to Students shall be made by quarterly instalments in advance, provided that <strong>the</strong> Board<br />

may at any time withhold payment if in <strong>the</strong>ir opinion <strong>the</strong> Student has not been pursuing his or her<br />

studies with sufficient diligence.<br />

The duties <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Reader are described in <strong>the</strong> following extract from a codicil to <strong>the</strong> Will <strong>of</strong> Mr<br />

Sandars:<br />

I bequeath to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cambridge</strong> in its corporate capacity <strong>the</strong> sum <strong>of</strong> £2,000 free <strong>of</strong> duty<br />

And I direct that this sum be invested and that <strong>the</strong> Income arising <strong>the</strong>refrom be paid to a Reader in Bibliography<br />

such Reader to be elected in <strong>the</strong> first instance and on each vacancy by <strong>the</strong> Vice-Chancellor <strong>the</strong> Master <strong>of</strong> Trinity<br />

College <strong>Cambridge</strong> when not holding <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> Vice-Chancellor and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r persons for <strong>the</strong> time being<br />

composing <strong>the</strong> Syndicate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> Library and such Reader may be appointed for such a period as <strong>the</strong><br />

elective body shall think fit and specify and shall be subject to removal by such elective body at <strong>the</strong>ir discretion.<br />
