914 TRUST EMOLUMENTS<br />

<strong>the</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Technology. Every course shall be advertised in <strong>the</strong> Reporter not later than <strong>the</strong> division<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> term preceding <strong>the</strong> term or Long Vacation in which it is to be held. The Committee <strong>of</strong><br />

Management shall have authority to restrict admission to <strong>the</strong> courses in <strong>the</strong> interests <strong>of</strong> effective<br />

teaching.<br />

GWYNAETH PRETTY RESEARCH FUND AND STUDENTSHIP<br />

The Fund<br />

1. The Trust Fund founded in memory <strong>of</strong> Miss Gwynaeth Pretty shall be called <strong>the</strong> Gwynaeth Pretty<br />

Research Fund and shall be devoted to <strong>the</strong> encouragement <strong>of</strong> research in <strong>the</strong> aetiology, pathology, or<br />

treatment <strong>of</strong> disease with particular, but not exclusive, reference to those diseases which cripple or<br />

disable in childhood or early life.<br />

2. The administration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be entrusted to <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Pathology in<br />

conjunction with four o<strong>the</strong>r Managers. The o<strong>the</strong>r Managers shall be <strong>the</strong> Regius Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Physic,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Sir William Dunn Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Biochemistry, <strong>the</strong> Mistress <strong>of</strong> Girton College, and one o<strong>the</strong>r person<br />

who shall be nominated by <strong>the</strong> ex <strong>of</strong>ficio Managers and appointed by <strong>the</strong> Council in <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas<br />

Term to serve for three years from 1 January next following.<br />

3. No resolution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers shall be valid unless approved by at least three Managers at a<br />

meeting to which all <strong>the</strong> Managers have been summoned, but a resolution signed by all <strong>the</strong> Managers<br />

shall have <strong>the</strong> same validity as a resolution carried at a meeting.<br />

4. The income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Trust Fund shall be applied from time to time for all or any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> following<br />

purposes:<br />

(a) to endow a Studentship to be called <strong>the</strong> Gwynaeth Pretty Studentship, <strong>the</strong> holder <strong>of</strong> which shall<br />

undertake whole-time study and training for research in <strong>the</strong> aetiology, pathology, or treatment<br />

<strong>of</strong> disease with particular, but not exclusive, reference to those diseases which cripple or disable<br />

in childhood or early life;<br />

(b) to fur<strong>the</strong>r research in <strong>the</strong> aetiology, pathology, and treatment <strong>of</strong> disease by grants to defray <strong>the</strong><br />

cost <strong>of</strong> research or to purchase apparatus or material necessary for such research.<br />

5. If at any time <strong>the</strong>re is insufficient money available in <strong>the</strong> Fund to carry out effectively <strong>the</strong> objects<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> trust, it shall be lawful for <strong>the</strong> Managers to suspend <strong>the</strong> election to <strong>the</strong> Studentship and o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

expenditure under Regulation 4(b) in order that <strong>the</strong> income may accumulate.<br />

6. Additional moneys or securities may be accepted as additions to <strong>the</strong> Trust Fund or <strong>the</strong> Reserve<br />

Fund, and <strong>the</strong> names <strong>of</strong> any donor or donors <strong>the</strong>reto may by Grace be incorporated in <strong>the</strong> title <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Research Fund.<br />

The Studentship<br />

7. The Studentship shall be <strong>of</strong> an annual value to be determined from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Managers,<br />

and shall be tenable for three years. It shall not be awarded by competitive examination.<br />

8. Candidature for <strong>the</strong> Studentship shall be open, but <strong>the</strong> Student, if not a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>,<br />

must become such before <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> term next after election and remain such during tenure.<br />

9. Three months before <strong>the</strong> date at which <strong>the</strong> Studentship would become vacant, or immediately<br />

upon <strong>the</strong> occurrence <strong>of</strong> any casual vacancy, <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Pathology shall consult <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r Managers,<br />

and if it shall seem desirable to hold an election to <strong>the</strong> Studentship, <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor shall give public<br />

notice <strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong> inviting applications, and shall report upon <strong>the</strong> qualifications <strong>of</strong> all candidates whose<br />

names are sent in. The Managers shall consider <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor’s report and shall elect <strong>the</strong> person who<br />

is in <strong>the</strong>ir opinion best qualified.<br />

10. The income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Studentship shall be payable to <strong>the</strong> Student from <strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong> appointment,<br />

and shall be paid by equal quarterly payments, <strong>the</strong> payment for each quarter being made in advance.<br />

11. The place and nature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> studies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Student shall be subject to <strong>the</strong> approval <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Pathology, provided that <strong>the</strong> Student shall be bound to study within <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> unless<br />

<strong>the</strong> Managers shall dispense with this requirement for special reasons. The Managers shall take such<br />

steps as <strong>the</strong>y may think necessary to satisfy <strong>the</strong>mselves as to <strong>the</strong> diligence and progress <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Student,<br />

and may require from <strong>the</strong> Student any reports or o<strong>the</strong>r information on <strong>the</strong> subject <strong>of</strong> his or her studies<br />

which <strong>the</strong>y may think desirable.
