966 TRUST EMOLUMENTS<br />

Henry Arthur Thomas Studentship<br />

7. There shall be a Henry Arthur Thomas Studentship, which shall be for <strong>the</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>rance <strong>of</strong> research<br />

in <strong>the</strong> archaeology, art, history, language, law, literature, and philosophy <strong>of</strong> ancient Greece and Rome,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> comparative philology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Indo-European languages.<br />

8. The holder <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Studentship shall undertake advanced study or research in one or more <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

subjects specified in Regulation 7, according to a scheme to be approved by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong><br />

Classics.<br />

9. Candidature for <strong>the</strong> Studentship shall be open to any person who is or is about to be registered<br />

as a Graduate Student in <strong>the</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> Classics in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>. Election to and tenure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Studentship shall lapse if <strong>the</strong> person elected does not become or ceases to be a registered Graduate<br />

Student.<br />

10. The Electors to <strong>the</strong> Studentship shall be <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Classics, who may take such steps<br />

as <strong>the</strong>y think fit to inquire into <strong>the</strong> qualifications <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> candidates; provided that <strong>the</strong> Studentship shall<br />

not be awarded on <strong>the</strong> result <strong>of</strong> a competitive examination.<br />

11. Before <strong>the</strong> division <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Easter Term each year, <strong>the</strong> Board shall give notice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> date by<br />

which and <strong>the</strong> manner in which applications for <strong>the</strong> Studentship to be held in <strong>the</strong> next but one following<br />

academical year are to be submitted. An election to <strong>the</strong> Studentship shall be held during <strong>the</strong> academical<br />

year prior to <strong>the</strong> Studentship’s being taken up, on a date to be determined by <strong>the</strong> Board.<br />

12. The Studentship shall be tenable from <strong>the</strong> date on which <strong>the</strong> student comes into residence until<br />

30 September <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> calendar year next following. A Student shall be eligible for re-election on not<br />

more than two occasions.<br />

13. The emolument <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Studentship shall be such sum, not exceeding <strong>the</strong> available income <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Fund, as shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board within a range approved from time to time by<br />

<strong>the</strong> Council. The emolument shall be paid in such instalments as <strong>the</strong> Board shall from time to time<br />

determine, provided that <strong>the</strong> Board may withhold payment <strong>of</strong> any instalment if <strong>the</strong>y are not satisfied<br />

that <strong>the</strong> Student is pursuing his or her course <strong>of</strong> study with sufficient diligence.<br />

Henry Arthur Thomas Prizes<br />

14. The Examiners for Part IB <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Classical Tripos shall be empowered at <strong>the</strong>ir discretion to<br />

award to winners <strong>of</strong> <strong>University</strong> Classical Scholarships and o<strong>the</strong>r candidates Henry Arthur Thomas<br />

Prizes <strong>of</strong> books, which shall be charged on <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Henry Arthur Thomas Fund. These<br />

Prizes shall be <strong>of</strong> such value as shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Classics within a range<br />

approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council.<br />

Henry Arthur Thomas Travel Exhibitions<br />

15. Henry Arthur Thomas Travel Exhibitions shall be awarded each year to enable students to travel<br />

in Greece and Italy and o<strong>the</strong>r lands bordering on <strong>the</strong> Mediterranean.<br />

16. Three Awarders shall be appointed annually in <strong>the</strong> Lent Term by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Classics.<br />

17. The Faculty Board shall inform <strong>the</strong> Awarders <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> total sum that has been made available in<br />

accordance with Regulation 5(c) for <strong>the</strong> award <strong>of</strong> Travel Exhibitions. The number and <strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

awards shall be determined each year by <strong>the</strong> Awarders.<br />

18. A student shall be eligible for a Travel Exhibition if his or her performance in any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

following examinations is, in <strong>the</strong> opinion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Awarders, <strong>of</strong> sufficient merit:<br />

(i) <strong>the</strong> Preliminary Examination for Part II <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Classical Tripos;<br />

(ii) Part IA or Part IB or Part II <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Classical Tripos;<br />

(iii) <strong>the</strong> examination in classical Greek or in classical Latin ei<strong>the</strong>r in Part IA or in Part IB <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos;<br />

provided that<br />

(a) <strong>the</strong> student has not previously been awarded a Henry Arthur Thomas Travel Exhibition,<br />

and (b) not more than twelve complete terms have passed after his or her first term <strong>of</strong> residence.<br />

19. As soon as convenient after <strong>the</strong> publication <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> class-lists for <strong>the</strong> examinations specified in<br />

Regulation 18 and in any case not later than 30 June, <strong>the</strong> Awarders shall forward to <strong>the</strong> Registrary <strong>the</strong><br />

names <strong>of</strong> those students to whom Exhibitions have been awarded and <strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> awards. The<br />

names shall be published forthwith in <strong>the</strong> Reporter.
