3. On or before 1 June in each year <strong>the</strong> Examiners shall publish a Notice inviting <strong>the</strong> submission<br />

<strong>of</strong> exercises for <strong>the</strong> Medal and may, if <strong>the</strong>y think fit, announce a subject for <strong>the</strong> poem. The poem shall<br />

not exceed two hundred lines or such smaller number <strong>of</strong> lines as <strong>the</strong> Examiners may announce. All<br />

exercises must be sent to <strong>the</strong> Registrary so as to arrive not later than 1 February next following.<br />

4. Each candidate shall send three copies <strong>of</strong> his or her exercise to <strong>the</strong> Registrary. The exercise shall<br />

be in a printed or typewritten form; it shall bear a motto but not <strong>the</strong> candidate’s name, and shall be<br />

accompanied by a sealed envelope bearing <strong>the</strong> same motto outside and containing <strong>the</strong> candidate’s name<br />

and College.<br />

5. The successful candidate shall recite his or her poem in <strong>the</strong> Senate-House on <strong>the</strong> day fixed for<br />

<strong>the</strong> recitation <strong>of</strong> prize exercises, and shall deposit a printed or typewritten copy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> poem in <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> Library.<br />

One for <strong>the</strong> encouragement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> English Law<br />

Endowments, 1904, p. 398<br />

The Chancellor’s Medal for English Law shall be awarded by <strong>the</strong> Examiners for <strong>the</strong> LL.M. Examination<br />

for distinguished pr<strong>of</strong>iciency shown by a candidate in English Law and Legal History, provided that<br />

it shall not necessarily be awarded in each year but only in cases <strong>of</strong> exceptional merit, and that <strong>the</strong><br />

candidate shall have taken <strong>the</strong> examination before fifteen complete terms have passed after his or her<br />

first term <strong>of</strong> residence. Before <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Easter Term each year <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Law shall<br />

announce which <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> papers prescribed for <strong>the</strong> examination in <strong>the</strong> year next following are deemed<br />

to be papers in English Law and Legal History for this purpose.<br />

1CHANCERY LANE PRIZE IN LAW OF TORT<br />

Grace 1 <strong>of</strong> 30 January 2008<br />

1. The sum made available annually by 1 Chancery Lane for <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Law <strong>of</strong> Tort shall be<br />

applied in equal amounts as follows:<br />

(a) to provide a prize called <strong>the</strong> 1 Chancery Lane Prize in Law <strong>of</strong> Tort, which shall be awarded by<br />

<strong>the</strong> Examiners for Part IA or Part IB <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Law Tripos for distinction in <strong>the</strong> Law <strong>of</strong> Tort shown<br />

by performance in Paper 4 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Law Tripos; and<br />

(b) to fund <strong>the</strong> purchase <strong>of</strong> books, selected by <strong>the</strong> Chambers, for <strong>the</strong> Squire Law Library.<br />

2. If in any year <strong>the</strong> Prize is not awarded, <strong>the</strong> unexpended income for that year shall be applied for<br />

<strong>the</strong> purpose specified in paragraph 1(b) above.<br />

CHAUCER READING PRIZE<br />

1. The gift <strong>of</strong> Dr C. H. Page, <strong>of</strong> Sidney Sussex College, <strong>University</strong> Lecturer in English, shall form<br />

a fund <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> which shall be used to provide a prize called <strong>the</strong> Chaucer Reading Prize.<br />

2. The Prize shall be <strong>of</strong>fered for competition in each odd-numbered year and shall be open to all<br />

resident members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> in statu pupillari.<br />

3. The Prize shall be awarded by two Adjudicators nominated by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> English<br />

before <strong>the</strong> division <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lent Term <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> year in which <strong>the</strong> Prize is to be <strong>of</strong>fered.<br />

4. The examination for <strong>the</strong> Prize shall consist <strong>of</strong> reading aloud a passage chosen by <strong>the</strong> candidate<br />

from <strong>the</strong> poetical works <strong>of</strong> Chaucer. A candidate’s name shall be sent to <strong>the</strong> Registrary by his or her<br />

Tutor not less than fourteen days before <strong>the</strong> day <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> examination, toge<strong>the</strong>r with details <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> passage<br />

chosen.<br />

5. A winner <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prize shall not be eligible to compete a second time.<br />

6. The value <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prize shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> English, within a range<br />

approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council.<br />

7. Any unexpended income in <strong>the</strong> Fund may be added to <strong>the</strong> capital <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund or accumulated<br />

for use as income in subsequent years, as <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board may determine.<br />

CHEMISTRY ENDOWMENT FUND<br />

The Chemistry Endowment Fund shall be divided into six equal parts and distributed as follows:<br />

Five parts to <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Chemistry.<br />

One part to <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Materials Science and Metallurgy.
