H. M. Chadwick Prize shall be awarded by <strong>the</strong> Examiners for Part II <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tripos for <strong>the</strong> most<br />

outstanding performance in that examination. If in any year ei<strong>the</strong>r Prize is not awarded, <strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Prize shall be added to <strong>the</strong> sum available in that year for o<strong>the</strong>r awards in subjects in category A.<br />

5. There shall be <strong>of</strong>fered at least once every two years, in a subject or subjects in ei<strong>the</strong>r or both <strong>of</strong><br />

categories A and B, at least one H. M. Chadwick Studentship. The value <strong>of</strong> each Studentship shall be<br />

determined by <strong>the</strong> Committee <strong>of</strong> Managers within a range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council.<br />

Graduates or research students <strong>of</strong> any university in <strong>the</strong> United Kingdom or Eire shall be eligible for a<br />

Studentship, but preference shall be given to candidates who are graduates or Graduate Students <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> or applicants for admission as a Graduate Student. There shall be no competitive examination<br />

and no age limit. Each Studentship shall be tenable for one year in <strong>the</strong> first instance, and may be<br />

renewed and its value reviewed, subject to a maximum tenure <strong>of</strong> three years.<br />

6. The Committee <strong>of</strong> Managers shall be empowered to make grants, including travel and subsistence,<br />

for attendance at conferences or courses, or for any o<strong>the</strong>r purpose which promotes study or research.<br />

Grants may be awarded to any member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> in respect <strong>of</strong> any subject in category A, B,<br />

C, or D contained in <strong>the</strong> Schedule.<br />

7. The award <strong>of</strong> studentships and grants shall in general require knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> language or<br />

languages involved, but shall in general exclude studies <strong>of</strong> purely linguistic interest, biological<br />

anthropology, studies <strong>of</strong> primarily medical interest, archaeology relating to <strong>the</strong> Stone Age, or studies<br />

wholly concerned with material culture.<br />

8. In <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term <strong>the</strong> Committee <strong>of</strong> Managers shall publish a Notice inviting applications<br />

for <strong>the</strong> studentships and grants, and specifying <strong>the</strong> date by which and <strong>the</strong> manner in which applications<br />

shall be submitted.<br />

9. The regulations governing <strong>the</strong> Fund, o<strong>the</strong>r than this regulation, may be altered by Grace, provided<br />

that <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall not be changed.<br />

SCHEDULE<br />

The subjects for which <strong>the</strong> studentships, prizes, and grants shall be available and <strong>the</strong> requirements to be observed<br />

in each subject are as follows:<br />

A. The history, literature, thought, religion, sociology, antiquities, and art <strong>of</strong> any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> peoples <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> British<br />

Isles or <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scandinavian peoples before AD 1050, or <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Teutonic or <strong>the</strong> Celtic peoples collectively before<br />

AD 600.<br />

B. The same subjects in relation to any people or peoples <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Near East primarily before 1000 BC.<br />

C. The same subjects in relation to any modern primitive people or peoples in respect <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir native culture.<br />

D. Subjects included in <strong>the</strong> general history or comparative study <strong>of</strong> civilization, literature, thought, religion,<br />

sociology, or art, but subjects which are wholly or mainly concerned with Western Europe since AD 1050 or with<br />

<strong>the</strong> Classical periods <strong>of</strong> Greece and Rome or <strong>of</strong> India or with any o<strong>the</strong>r period <strong>of</strong> similarly advanced culture shall<br />

be excluded.<br />

JOHN CHADWICK GREEK AND LATIN RESEARCH FUND<br />

1. The sum given to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> by John Chadwick, Litt.D., Honorary Fellow <strong>of</strong> Downing College<br />

and formerly Reader in Greek Language, from <strong>the</strong> proceeds <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Antonio Feltrinelli Prize, awarded<br />

to him by <strong>the</strong> Accademia dei Lincei, Rome, shall form a fund called <strong>the</strong> John Chadwick Greek and<br />

Latin Research Fund, <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> which shall be <strong>the</strong> promotion <strong>of</strong> study and research in <strong>the</strong> Greek<br />

and Latin languages and in germane subjects.<br />

2. The Managers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be:<br />

(a) <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Comparative Philology,<br />

(b) two persons appointed by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Classics.<br />

Managers in class (b) shall be appointed in <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term to serve for two years from 1 January<br />

following <strong>the</strong>ir appointment.<br />

3. The income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be applied, at <strong>the</strong> discretion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers,<br />

(a) to make grants to Graduate Students and o<strong>the</strong>r persons, including academic visitors to <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong>, who are engaged in advanced study or research in <strong>the</strong> subjects specified in<br />

Regulation 1;<br />

(b) to assist in any o<strong>the</strong>r way <strong>the</strong> promotion <strong>of</strong> advanced study and research in <strong>the</strong> subjects specified<br />

in Regulation 1.
