THE JOHN STEWART OF RANNOCH SACRED MUSIC FUND AND SCHOLARSHIPS<br />
Endowments, 1904, p. 335<br />
1. The Managers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> John Stewart <strong>of</strong> Rannoch Sacred Music Fund shall be <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong><br />
Music.<br />
2. The first charge on <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be provision, if <strong>the</strong>re are candidates <strong>of</strong> sufficient<br />
merit, for <strong>the</strong> award in each year <strong>of</strong> at least two Scholarships in Sacred Music. The Scholarships shall<br />
be awarded on <strong>the</strong> results <strong>of</strong> a competitive examination.<br />
3. The scheme <strong>of</strong> examination shall consist <strong>of</strong>:<br />
(a) a dissertation <strong>of</strong> not less than 5,000 words and not more than 10,000 words on a topic in <strong>the</strong><br />
field <strong>of</strong> sacred music proposed by <strong>the</strong> candidate and approved by <strong>the</strong> Managers;<br />
(b) a viva voce examination on <strong>the</strong> dissertation, which may also include ear-tests, keyboard-tests,<br />
and such o<strong>the</strong>r tests as <strong>the</strong> Examiners deem to be desirable.<br />
4. Candidature shall be open to any student resident in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>, provided that at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> examination not more than twelve complete terms will have passed after his or her first term <strong>of</strong><br />
residence. Each candidate shall send <strong>the</strong> proposed subject <strong>of</strong> his or her dissertation to <strong>the</strong> Secretary <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Music not later than <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> third quarter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term; a<br />
candidate who wishes to claim preference under Regulation 7 shall submit at <strong>the</strong> same time a certificate<br />
<strong>of</strong> his or her place <strong>of</strong> birth. The Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board shall communicate each candidate’s<br />
proposed subject to <strong>the</strong> Managers, and shall inform <strong>the</strong> candidate not later than <strong>the</strong> last day <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Michaelmas Term <strong>of</strong> its approval or rejection by <strong>the</strong>m.<br />
5. Candidates shall send <strong>the</strong>ir dissertations to <strong>the</strong> Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board so as to arrive not<br />
later than <strong>the</strong> last day <strong>of</strong> Full Lent Term; each dissertation shall be accompanied by a statement<br />
certifying that it is <strong>the</strong> candidate’s own original work. The viva voce examination shall be held in <strong>the</strong><br />
Easter Term, not later than <strong>the</strong> division <strong>of</strong> term.<br />
6. The examination shall be conducted by two Examiners appointed in <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term on<br />
<strong>the</strong> nomination <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers. Each Examiner shall receive from <strong>the</strong> Fund, unless <strong>the</strong>re are no<br />
candidates, such amount as may be determined by <strong>the</strong> Managers within a range approved from time<br />
to time by <strong>the</strong> Council. In addition to <strong>the</strong> foregoing payments, an external Examiner as defined in <strong>the</strong><br />
regulations for payments to Examiners and Assessors shall receive a payment <strong>of</strong> such sum, unless<br />
<strong>the</strong>re are no candidates, as shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Managers within a range approved from time to<br />
time by <strong>the</strong> Council. All o<strong>the</strong>r expenses <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> examination shall be defrayed out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund.<br />
7. If two or more candidates show equal pr<strong>of</strong>iciency preference shall be given to natives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
counties <strong>of</strong> Wilts, Somerset, or Gloucester, including <strong>the</strong> city and county <strong>of</strong> Bristol.<br />
8. A Scholarship shall be tenable for three years from 1 October preceding <strong>the</strong> award. The Managers<br />
shall be empowered to renew <strong>the</strong> tenure for a fourth year, but for no longer.<br />
9. The annual value <strong>of</strong> each Scholarship shall be such sum as shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Managers<br />
within a range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council.<br />
10. At <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Easter Term in which <strong>the</strong> election is held, each newly elected Scholar shall<br />
be entitled to receive one year’s emolument <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scholarship. In succeeding years <strong>the</strong> emolument<br />
shall be paid in equal termly instalments, provided that no payment shall be made in respect <strong>of</strong> any<br />
term unless <strong>the</strong> Scholar has kept <strong>the</strong> term or has pursued a course <strong>of</strong> study or research approved by<br />
<strong>the</strong> Managers.<br />
11. After provision has been made for <strong>the</strong> Scholarships in accordance with Regulation 2 any<br />
unexpended income accumulated in <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be applied from time to time, at <strong>the</strong> discretion <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Managers and subject to such conditions as <strong>the</strong>y may think fit,<br />
(a) to make grants to Scholars or o<strong>the</strong>r persons engaged in <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> Sacred Music;<br />
(b) to defray, in whole or in part, expenses incurred by Graduate Students in pursuing research<br />
projects in Sacred Music;<br />
(c) to make purchases <strong>of</strong> books, musical instruments, and o<strong>the</strong>r material for <strong>the</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> Music;<br />
(d) to assist in any o<strong>the</strong>r way <strong>the</strong> promotion and encouragement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> Sacred Music in <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>University</strong>.
