shall have <strong>the</strong> preference, and no one may be elected to <strong>the</strong> Exhibition a third time.<br />

4. Candidates’ names shall be sent by Tutors to <strong>the</strong> Registrary before 1 December <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academical<br />

year in which <strong>the</strong>y are to compete.<br />

5. The Awarders shall be <strong>the</strong> Examiners in Sanskrit for <strong>the</strong> Oriental Studies Tripos.<br />

6. Candidates for first election shall be tested by <strong>the</strong> Sanskrit questions in Papers Sa. 1 and Sa. 2<br />

<strong>of</strong> Part I <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Oriental Studies Tripos. A candidate for re-election, if also a candidate in Sanskrit for<br />

Part II <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tripos, shall be tested by his or her work <strong>the</strong>rein. Candidates for re-election who are not<br />

<strong>of</strong>fering any paper in Sanskrit in <strong>the</strong> Tripos shall submit to <strong>the</strong> Awarders, through <strong>the</strong>ir Tutors, evidence<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir study <strong>of</strong> Sanskrit since <strong>the</strong>ir first election.<br />

7. The period <strong>of</strong> tenure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Exhibition shall be a year from <strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> award.<br />

8. The value <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Exhibition shall be such sum as shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong><br />

Asian and Middle Eastern Studies within a range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council.<br />

9. Any unexpended income accumulated in <strong>the</strong> Fund may be used at <strong>the</strong> discretion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty<br />

Board <strong>of</strong> Asian and Middle Eastern Studies for <strong>the</strong> promotion and encouragement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong><br />

Sanskrit among undergraduate members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>.<br />

BENDER PRIZE<br />

1. The money received by <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> under <strong>the</strong> Will <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Reverend Alfred Philipp Bender,<br />

M.A., formerly <strong>of</strong> St John’s College, shall be separately invested and shall constitute a fund called <strong>the</strong><br />

Bender Fund.<br />

2. There shall be a prize called <strong>the</strong> Bender Prize, which shall be awarded annually by <strong>the</strong> Examiners<br />

for <strong>the</strong> Asian and Middle Eastern Studies Tripos to <strong>the</strong> candidate who has shown <strong>the</strong> greatest distinction<br />

in Biblical Hebrew in Part II <strong>of</strong> that Tripos.<br />

3. The value <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prize shall be such sum as shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Asian<br />

and Middle Eastern Studies within a range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council.<br />

4. Any unexpended income accumulated in <strong>the</strong> Fund may be used at <strong>the</strong> discretion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty<br />

Board <strong>of</strong> Asian and Middle Eastern Studies for <strong>the</strong> promotion and encouragement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong><br />

JOHN BENNETT FUND<br />

1. The gift to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> by Mrs Mary Bennett in memory <strong>of</strong> her late husband, John Sloman<br />

Bennett, C.M.G., M.A., <strong>of</strong> Magdalene College, shall form a fund called <strong>the</strong> John Bennett Fund for <strong>the</strong><br />

promotion <strong>of</strong> Middle Eastern historical studies.<br />

2. The first charge on <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be <strong>the</strong> provision <strong>of</strong> a lecture, called <strong>the</strong> John<br />

Bennett Lecture, to be delivered from time to time.<br />

3. The Fund shall be managed by <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Middle Eastern Studies in<br />

consultation with and with <strong>the</strong> agreement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> teaching <strong>of</strong>ficers in <strong>the</strong> Department, who shall appoint<br />

<strong>the</strong> Lecturer. So far as possible <strong>the</strong> Managers shall appoint a Lecturer at intervals <strong>of</strong> not more than<br />

three years.<br />

4. The stipend <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lecturer shall be such sum as shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Managers within a<br />

range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council.<br />

5. Any unexpended income accumulated in <strong>the</strong> Fund may be applied from time to time at <strong>the</strong><br />

discretion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers to meet:<br />

(a) any expenses that may be incurred in connection with <strong>the</strong> Lecture;<br />

(b) any o<strong>the</strong>r expenses <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> teaching <strong>of</strong>ficers in <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Middle Eastern Studies related<br />

to historical studies, preference being given to expenses related to travel or <strong>the</strong> publication <strong>of</strong><br />

research.<br />

BENSON ENGLISH LIBRARY FUND<br />

The income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund derived from monies accruing to <strong>the</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> English from <strong>the</strong> unexpended<br />

balance <strong>of</strong> a legacy <strong>of</strong> Dr A. C. Benson, <strong>of</strong> Magdalene College, in 1925, and an appeal for <strong>the</strong> English<br />

Library made following <strong>the</strong> First World War, and now known as <strong>the</strong> Benson English Library Fund,<br />

shall, at <strong>the</strong> discretion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> English, be expended to maintain a Library for <strong>the</strong><br />

Faculty <strong>of</strong> English.
