2. The Managers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Biochemistry, <strong>the</strong> Administrative<br />

Officer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Biochemistry, and <strong>the</strong> Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Postgraduate Committee in <strong>the</strong><br />

Department.<br />

3. The income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be used to <strong>of</strong>fer financial support to Graduate Students in <strong>the</strong><br />

Department to assist with travel to scientific conferences, if <strong>the</strong>y have no o<strong>the</strong>r funding for this purpose<br />

from any Studentship, Scholarship, or o<strong>the</strong>r source. To be eligible for support from <strong>the</strong> Fund, students<br />

must be presenting a poster or giving a talk at <strong>the</strong> conference. Graduate Students in <strong>the</strong> first year <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir studies will not be eligible.<br />

4. Any unexpended income in a financial year shall be ei<strong>the</strong>r added to <strong>the</strong> capital <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund or<br />

accumulated for use as income in future years, as <strong>the</strong> Managers may determine.<br />

SCANDINAVIAN STUDIES FUND<br />

1. The Scandinavian Studies Fund shall be administered by Managers who shall also act as <strong>the</strong><br />

Electors to <strong>the</strong> Scandinavian Studentship.<br />

2. The Managers shall be:<br />

(a) <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic;<br />

(b) three persons appointed by <strong>the</strong> General Board;<br />

(c) two persons appointed by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Modern and Medieval Languages, one <strong>of</strong> whom<br />

shall be a <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficer engaged in teaching and research in <strong>the</strong> area <strong>of</strong> Scandinavian Studies;<br />

(d) one <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficer from <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic, appointed by <strong>the</strong><br />

Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> English.<br />

3. Managers in classes (b)–(d) shall be appointed in <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term to serve for three years<br />

from 1 January following <strong>the</strong>ir appointment.<br />

4. The income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund in any year may be applied as follows:<br />

(a) to provide <strong>the</strong> emolument <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scandinavian Student;<br />

(b) to meet <strong>the</strong> cost <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Wallenberg Prize;<br />

(c) subject to <strong>the</strong> foregoing two prior charges, and with <strong>the</strong> approval <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers, to contribute<br />

towards <strong>the</strong> cost <strong>of</strong> such teaching in Scandinavian subjects as may be arranged by <strong>the</strong> Faculty<br />

Board <strong>of</strong> Modern and Medieval Languages with <strong>the</strong> approval <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General Board.<br />

5. Any unexpended income accumulated in <strong>the</strong> Fund may be used by <strong>the</strong> Managers to make grants<br />

to students for <strong>the</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>rance <strong>of</strong> study connected with Scandinavian countries, or grants for any o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

purpose which <strong>the</strong>y may approve as being in <strong>the</strong> interests <strong>of</strong> Scandinavian studies and Scandinavian<br />

teaching in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cambridge</strong>.<br />

Scandinavian Studentship<br />

6. There shall be established from <strong>the</strong> Fund for <strong>the</strong> promotion <strong>of</strong> Scandinavian Studies a Studentship<br />

to be called <strong>the</strong> Scandinavian Studentship, which shall be open to members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>.<br />

7. It shall be <strong>the</strong> duty <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Student to pursue in a Scandinavian country, and in <strong>the</strong> first instance<br />

preferably in Sweden, advanced study or research in <strong>the</strong> languages, literature, philosophy, history,<br />

economic conditions, art, or archaeology <strong>of</strong> Sweden, Denmark, Norway, or Iceland.<br />

8. The election <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Student shall be made annually in June.<br />

9. The Studentship shall be tenable for one year; but a Student shall be eligible for re-election on<br />

not more than two occasions.<br />

10. At <strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> election candidates for election or re-election to <strong>the</strong> Studentship shall have<br />

passed some final examination for <strong>the</strong> degree <strong>of</strong> Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts and not more than twenty-four terms<br />

shall have elapsed since <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir first term <strong>of</strong> residence.<br />

11. An application for election must be submitted through <strong>the</strong> candidate’s Tutor to <strong>the</strong> Registrary<br />

so as to arrive not later than 1 June, and must be accompanied by a statement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong> advanced<br />

study or research which <strong>the</strong> candidate proposes to undertake if elected. Such course shall involve<br />

residence in a Scandinavian country or Scandinavian countries for not less than three months. The<br />

course proposed may be varied with <strong>the</strong> consent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers.<br />

12. The Managers shall have authority to take any steps that <strong>the</strong>y think advisable to enable <strong>the</strong>m to<br />

ascertain <strong>the</strong> qualifications <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> candidates: provided that <strong>the</strong> Studentship shall not be awarded by<br />

competitive examination.<br />
