10. The emolument <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Studentship shall be such sum not exceeding <strong>the</strong> available income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Fund, within a range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council, as <strong>the</strong> Electors may determine after<br />

taking account <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Student’s financial circumstances. The emolument shall be paid in such instalments<br />

as shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Electors, provided that <strong>the</strong> Electors may withhold payment <strong>of</strong> any<br />

instalment if <strong>the</strong>y are not satisfied that <strong>the</strong> Student is pursuing his or her course <strong>of</strong> study with sufficient<br />

diligence.<br />

11. Any unexpended income accumulated in <strong>the</strong> Fund may be used at <strong>the</strong> discretion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Electors<br />

to assist <strong>the</strong> Student to meet travelling expenses or any o<strong>the</strong>r special expenses in connection with his<br />

or her research that may be approved by <strong>the</strong> Electors.<br />

GEDGE PRIZE<br />

1. The Prize shall be called <strong>the</strong> Gedge Prize. It shall be <strong>of</strong>fered for competition in every second<br />

year, and shall consist <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> interest on <strong>the</strong> capital sum (£1,000) for <strong>the</strong> two years next preceding.<br />

2. The Prize shall be awarded for <strong>the</strong> best original observations in Physiology or in any branch<br />

<strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong>, that is to say, in Histology, Physiological Chemistry, or Physiological Physics, <strong>the</strong> word<br />

Physiology being used in a wide sense. The observations must, however, be limited to research which<br />

has been conducted by <strong>the</strong> candidate since <strong>the</strong> commencement <strong>of</strong> his or her first term <strong>of</strong> residence.<br />

3. A candidate for <strong>the</strong> Prize (who need not necessarily be a graduate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>) shall be:<br />

ei<strong>the</strong>r (a) a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> who during six terms subsequent to <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> term<br />

<strong>of</strong> his or her matriculation has studied in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> laboratories or attended <strong>University</strong><br />

lectures and who at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> award <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prize will be <strong>of</strong> not less than five years’<br />

and not more than seven years’ standing from matriculation;<br />

or (b) a Graduate Student who at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> award <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prize will have been registered as a<br />

Graduate Student for not more than five years.<br />

4. The Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Biology shall cause a Notice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> conditions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> award to be inserted<br />

in <strong>the</strong> Reporter in <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term next preceding that in which <strong>the</strong> Prize is to be<br />

awarded.<br />

5. The Examiners shall be <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Physiology, and two persons nominated by <strong>the</strong> Faculty<br />

Board <strong>of</strong> Biology and appointed by <strong>the</strong> General Board. The persons so nominated shall be or shall<br />

have been engaged in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> in <strong>the</strong> teaching <strong>of</strong> Physiology or <strong>of</strong> any branch <strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong>. The<br />

Examiners shall be appointed before <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> month <strong>of</strong> May previous to <strong>the</strong> term in which <strong>the</strong><br />

Prize is to be awarded. Each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Examiners nominated by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Biology shall receive<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Chest, except in cases where no exercise is sent in, such amount as may be determined by<br />

<strong>the</strong> Faculty Board within a range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council. The Examiners shall<br />

have power to nominate an Assessor or Assessors (not exceeding three in number) for appointment by<br />

<strong>the</strong> General Board. Each Assessor so appointed shall receive from <strong>the</strong> Chest such sum as may be<br />

determined by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board within a range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council. The<br />

number <strong>of</strong> Assessors so appointed shall not be more than <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> essays expected.<br />

6. Every candidate shall notify <strong>the</strong> subject <strong>of</strong> his or her essay to <strong>the</strong> Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board<br />

<strong>of</strong> Biology before 1 May in <strong>the</strong> Easter Term preceding <strong>the</strong> award, and shall send <strong>the</strong> essay to <strong>the</strong><br />

Registrary by 7 September. The Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Biology shall decide whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> subject proposed<br />

falls within <strong>the</strong> scope <strong>of</strong> Regulation 2.<br />

7. The Examiners may require every candidate to deliver his or her essay in <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> a lecture<br />

and to demonstrate any experiments and researches mentioned <strong>the</strong>rein.<br />

8. The Prize shall be awarded by <strong>the</strong> Examiners in <strong>the</strong> month <strong>of</strong> October <strong>of</strong> each year <strong>of</strong> which <strong>the</strong><br />

number is even.<br />

9. The Examiners shall report to <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Biology whe<strong>the</strong>r any essay has been sent in<br />

and what, if any, award has been made. The Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board shall <strong>the</strong>reupon announce<br />

<strong>the</strong> decision <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Examiners.<br />

10. If in any year <strong>the</strong> Prize is not awarded, <strong>the</strong> interest on <strong>the</strong> capital sum for <strong>the</strong> two years next<br />

preceding shall be paid to <strong>the</strong> account <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Museum <strong>of</strong> Zoology.<br />
