19. These regulations may be altered by <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> with <strong>the</strong> agreement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Trustees <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Grace 4 <strong>of</strong> 16 June 2010<br />

1. The sums received from <strong>the</strong> Institute for Strategic Dialogue, on behalf <strong>of</strong> benefactors associated<br />

with <strong>the</strong> Institute, towards <strong>the</strong> costs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Humanitas Visiting Pr<strong>of</strong>essorships shall form a fund called<br />

<strong>the</strong> Humanitas Visiting Pr<strong>of</strong>essorships Fund.<br />

2. A number <strong>of</strong> Humanitas Visiting Pr<strong>of</strong>essors, focused on <strong>the</strong> arts, humanities, and social sciences,<br />

may be elected annually under <strong>the</strong> authority <strong>of</strong> Statute D, XV, 1(c)(iii) by <strong>the</strong> General Board, on <strong>the</strong><br />

recommendation <strong>of</strong> an Advisory Committee, comprising <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Arts and Humanities<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> School <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Humanities and Social Sciences (one <strong>of</strong> whom shall be Chairman),<br />

<strong>the</strong> Director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Centre for Research in <strong>the</strong> Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities, and up to two<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r persons co-opted by <strong>the</strong> Advisory Committee, to include a representative nominated by <strong>the</strong><br />

Institute for Strategic Dialogue. The Advisory Committee shall also serve as <strong>the</strong> Management Committee<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund.<br />

3. The tenure <strong>of</strong> each Humanitas Visiting Pr<strong>of</strong>essorship shall be for a minimum <strong>of</strong> two weeks in<br />

<strong>the</strong> year <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> appointment and for a maximum <strong>of</strong> eight weeks.<br />

4. It shall be <strong>the</strong> duty <strong>of</strong> a Humanitas Visiting Pr<strong>of</strong>essor to deliver up to three public lectures and<br />

to engage in a symposium in <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Visiting Pr<strong>of</strong>essorship.<br />

5. If and whenever <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund exceeds <strong>the</strong> amount required to defray <strong>the</strong> costs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Visiting Pr<strong>of</strong>essorships, <strong>the</strong> excess <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> income over that amount may be retained for use in future<br />

years or shall be applied to support <strong>the</strong> goals <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> scheme in such a manner as may be approved by<br />

<strong>the</strong> General Board on <strong>the</strong> recommendation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Advisory Committee.<br />

HUPPERT PRIZE IN G EOPHYSICS<br />

1. The sum given to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> by Herbert Huppert, FRS, Fellow <strong>of</strong> King’s College and Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

<strong>of</strong> Theoretical Geophysics, from <strong>the</strong> proceeds <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Arthur L. Day Prize awarded to him by <strong>the</strong><br />

National Academy <strong>of</strong> Sciences, Washington, DC, shall form a fund, to be called <strong>the</strong> Huppert Prize<br />

Fund, <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> which shall be used to provide a Huppert Prize in Geophysics.<br />

2. The Adjudicators <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prize shall be <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Applied Ma<strong>the</strong>matics and<br />

Theoretical Physics, <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Earth Sciences, <strong>the</strong> Director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong><br />

Theoretical Geophysics, and <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Active Tectonics.<br />

3. The Prize shall be awarded annually by <strong>the</strong> Adjudicators for <strong>the</strong> most imaginative and innovative<br />

written contribution to <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> geophysics by a resident undergraduate member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Cambridge</strong>.<br />

4. The value <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prize shall be such sum as shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Adjudicators within a<br />

range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council.<br />

5. Public notice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prize shall be given by <strong>the</strong> Adjudicators not later than <strong>the</strong> division <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Michaelmas Term. The notice shall include <strong>the</strong> date by which and <strong>the</strong> manner in which candidates<br />

shall submit <strong>the</strong>ir entries for <strong>the</strong> Prize.<br />

6. The Prize shall be awarded in <strong>the</strong> Easter Term.<br />

7. One copy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> written work <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> successful candidate shall be deposited in <strong>the</strong> Betty and<br />

Gordon Moore Library and one copy in <strong>the</strong> Library <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Earth Sciences. Each Library<br />

shall maintain a consolidated record <strong>of</strong> all written works that have been awarded <strong>the</strong> Prize.<br />

8. From any unexpended income which may have accumulated in <strong>the</strong> Fund <strong>the</strong> Adjudicators may<br />

in any year award a second Prize <strong>of</strong> such amount as <strong>the</strong>y see fit.
