938 TRUST EMOLUMENTS<br />

JOHN ROBERT SEELEY LECTURESHIP IN POLITICAL T HOUGHT<br />

1. There shall be a biennial course <strong>of</strong> lectures called <strong>the</strong> John Robert Seeley Lectures in Political<br />

Thought which shall be delivered by a distinguished scholar from outside <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> in each year<br />

<strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> which is odd.<br />

2. The lecturer shall be appointed by <strong>the</strong> Managers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Political Thought Fund at least two years<br />

before he or she is required to deliver <strong>the</strong> lectures.<br />

3. The lecturer shall deliver in English a course <strong>of</strong> no fewer than four nor more than six lectures in<br />

Full Term during one academical year.<br />

4. The stipend paid to <strong>the</strong> lecturer shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Managers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Political Thought<br />

Fund.<br />

5. The lecturer shall also receive reimbursement in respect <strong>of</strong> such travelling and subsistence<br />

expenses as may be approved by <strong>the</strong> Managers.<br />

6. The Managers may at <strong>the</strong>ir discretion defray from <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund any o<strong>the</strong>r expenses<br />

incurred in connection with <strong>the</strong> lectures.<br />

SEELEY MEDAL<br />

1. The Medal shall be called <strong>the</strong> Seeley Medal.<br />

2. The Medal may be awarded in each year to a candidate for <strong>the</strong> Thirlwall or Prince Consort Prize,<br />

as <strong>the</strong> case may be, for that year whose dissertation in <strong>the</strong> judgement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Adjudicators is worthy <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Thirlwall or Prince Consort Prize.<br />

3. These regulations, except Regulation 1, shall be subject to alteration by Grace on <strong>the</strong> recommendation<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> History: provided that in all cases regard be given to <strong>the</strong> object <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

subscribers to commemorate Sir John Seeley.<br />

ALKIS SERAPHIM MEMORIAL FUND<br />

1. The gift <strong>of</strong> Mr and Mrs G. M. Seraphim in memory <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir son, Alkis Seraphim, <strong>of</strong> Selwyn<br />

College, shall form a fund, called <strong>the</strong> Alkis Seraphim Memorial Fund, to provide an annual Alkis<br />

Seraphim Memorial Lecture on a subject in biochemistry.<br />

2. The Alkis Seraphim Memorial Lecturer shall be appointed by <strong>the</strong> Electors to <strong>the</strong> Lectureship in<br />

<strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academical year in which <strong>the</strong> Lecture is to be given.<br />

3. The Electors shall be <strong>the</strong> Sir William Dunn Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Biochemistry and one person appointed<br />

in <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term by <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficers in <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Biochemistry from among<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir own number to serve for a period <strong>of</strong> three years from 1 January next following.<br />

4. The Electors shall be empowered to make arrangements for <strong>the</strong> Lecture and to determine <strong>the</strong><br />

honorarium and expenses to be paid to <strong>the</strong> Lecturer within <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund.<br />

SEVEN PILLARS STUDENTSHIP FUND<br />

1. The donation received from <strong>the</strong> Seven Pillars <strong>of</strong> Wisdom Trust and any o<strong>the</strong>r sums which may<br />

be contributed by that Trust or o<strong>the</strong>rwise for <strong>the</strong> same purpose shall constitute a fund, called The<br />

Seven Pillars Studentship Fund, for <strong>the</strong> advancement <strong>of</strong> classical learning in accordance with <strong>the</strong>se<br />

regulations.<br />

2. The Managers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Classics, who may delegate any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

functions concerning <strong>the</strong> Fund to a Committee not necessarily composed wholly <strong>of</strong> members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Board.<br />

3. The income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be used to provide one or more annual Studentships to be known<br />

as Seven Pillars Studentships open to persons registered or intending to be registered for <strong>the</strong> M.Phil.<br />

Degree in <strong>the</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> Classics.<br />

4. The Studentships shall be for <strong>the</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>rance <strong>of</strong> research in accordance with <strong>the</strong> regulations<br />

governing <strong>the</strong> M.Phil. Degree in any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> subject areas within <strong>the</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> Classics. In <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong><br />

one or more candidates for <strong>the</strong> Studentships being <strong>of</strong> equal merit in <strong>the</strong> opinion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers,<br />

preference shall be given to a candidate electing to work in <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> Art or Archaeology.
