BETHA WOLFERSTAN RYLANDS PRIZE<br />

1. The sum <strong>of</strong> £1,000, <strong>the</strong> gift <strong>of</strong> G. H. W. Rylands, M.A., Hon. Litt.D., Fellow <strong>of</strong> King’s College,<br />

<strong>University</strong> Lecturer in English, in memory <strong>of</strong> his mo<strong>the</strong>r Betha Wolferstan Rylands, shall form a fund<br />

called <strong>the</strong> Betha Wolferstan Rylands Fund, <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> which shall be used to provide a Betha<br />

Wolferstan Rylands Prize.<br />

2. The Prize shall be awarded annually by <strong>the</strong> Examiners for Part I <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> English Tripos to a<br />

candidate who achieves distinction in that examination.<br />

3. The value <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prize shall be <strong>the</strong> annual income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund which shall be paid to <strong>the</strong> prizewinner<br />

not later than 30 June in each year.<br />

4. The prize-winner shall use <strong>the</strong> prize-money ei<strong>the</strong>r towards meeting <strong>the</strong> cost <strong>of</strong> some form <strong>of</strong><br />

travel or for <strong>the</strong> purchase <strong>of</strong> books or for both purposes, and shall send to <strong>the</strong> Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty<br />

Board <strong>of</strong> English as soon as is practicable a short statement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> way in which <strong>the</strong> prize-money has<br />

been used.<br />

5. If in any year no candidate is deemed worthy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prize <strong>the</strong> income for that year shall be added<br />

to <strong>the</strong> capital <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund.<br />

G. H. W. RYLANDS FUND<br />

1. The sum given to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> by G. H. W. Rylands, M.A., Hon. Litt.D., Fellow <strong>of</strong> King’s<br />

College, shall form a fund to be called <strong>the</strong> G. H. W. Rylands Fund.<br />

2. The income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be expended from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Fitzwilliam Museum<br />

Syndicate on <strong>the</strong> purchase, or a contribution towards <strong>the</strong> purchase, <strong>of</strong> objets d’art to be added to <strong>the</strong><br />

collections in <strong>the</strong> Fitzwilliam Museum; for this purpose objets d’art shall be deemed to include china,<br />

glass, silver, furniture (preferably European and before 1850), and drawings.<br />

3. Unexpended income shall not be added to <strong>the</strong> capital <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund, but shall be accumulated for<br />

use as income in subsequent years.<br />

RAYMOND AND BEVERLY SACKLER BENEFACTIONS<br />

Sackler Fund for Medical Sciences<br />

1. The sum <strong>of</strong> £1.2m, <strong>the</strong> benefaction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Raymond and Beverly Sackler Foundation, shall form<br />

a fund called <strong>the</strong> Sackler Fund for Medical Sciences, <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> which shall be used for <strong>the</strong> support<br />

<strong>of</strong> postgraduate teaching and research in medicine and for <strong>the</strong> encouragement and enhancement <strong>of</strong><br />

clinical and basic medical research in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> and in o<strong>the</strong>r institutions connected with <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong>.<br />

2. The Fund shall be administered by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Clinical Medicine, in accordance with<br />

<strong>the</strong> provisions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Deed <strong>of</strong> Gift, dated 8 December 1990, between <strong>the</strong> Sackler Foundation and <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong>. The Faculty Board shall report each year to <strong>the</strong> Trustees <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sackler Foundation on <strong>the</strong><br />

operation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund.<br />

Sackler Fund for Astronomy<br />

1. The sum <strong>of</strong> £250,000, <strong>the</strong> benefaction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Raymond and Beverly Sackler Foundation, shall<br />

form a fund called <strong>the</strong> Sackler Fund for Astronomy, <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> which shall be used to provide<br />

grants for <strong>the</strong> support <strong>of</strong> Visiting Fellows at <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Astronomy.<br />

2. The Managers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be:<br />

(a) <strong>the</strong> Director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Astronomy;<br />

(b) two persons appointed by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Physics and Chemistry from among <strong>the</strong> astronomers<br />

employed by <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>, <strong>of</strong> whom at least one shall be <strong>the</strong> holder <strong>of</strong> a Pr<strong>of</strong>essorship and at<br />

least one shall be <strong>the</strong> holder <strong>of</strong> an appointment in <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Astronomy;<br />

(c) a representative <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sackler Foundation.<br />

3. The Fund shall be administered by <strong>the</strong> Managers in accordance with <strong>the</strong> provisions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Deed<br />

<strong>of</strong> Gift, dated 12 November 1992, between <strong>the</strong> Sackler Foundation and <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>. The Managers<br />

shall report each year to <strong>the</strong> Trustees <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sackler Foundation on <strong>the</strong> operation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund.<br />
