5. The Student shall be elected by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board, who may take such steps as <strong>the</strong>y think fit to<br />

inquire into <strong>the</strong> qualifications <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> candidates; provided that <strong>the</strong> Studentship shall not be awarded on<br />

<strong>the</strong> results <strong>of</strong> a competitive examination.<br />

6. Before <strong>the</strong> division <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Easter Term each year, <strong>the</strong> Board shall give notice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> date by<br />

which and <strong>the</strong> manner in which applications for <strong>the</strong> Studentship to be held in <strong>the</strong> next but one following<br />

academical year are to be submitted. An election to <strong>the</strong> Studentship shall be held during <strong>the</strong> academical<br />

year prior to <strong>the</strong> Studentship’s being taken up, on a date to be determined by <strong>the</strong> Board.<br />

7. The Studentship shall be tenable from <strong>the</strong> date on which <strong>the</strong> student comes into residence until<br />

30 September <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> calendar year next following. A Student shall be eligible for re-election on not<br />

more than two occasions.<br />

8. The emolument <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Studentship shall be such sum, not exceeding <strong>the</strong> available income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Fund, as shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board within a range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong><br />

Council. The emolument shall be paid in such instalments as <strong>the</strong> Board shall from time to time<br />

determine, provided that <strong>the</strong> Board may withhold payment <strong>of</strong> any instalment if <strong>the</strong>y are not satisfied<br />

that <strong>the</strong> Student is pursuing his or her course <strong>of</strong> study with sufficient diligence.<br />

9. The balance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund after payment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> emoluments <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Craven Student and <strong>the</strong> Craven<br />

Scholars, and <strong>of</strong> such fees as are to be paid to Examiners from <strong>the</strong> Fund, shall be devoted to <strong>the</strong><br />

fur<strong>the</strong>rance <strong>of</strong> research in <strong>the</strong> subjects specified in Regulation 2.<br />

10. Grants for this purpose may be made by <strong>the</strong> Board, at <strong>the</strong>ir discretion, out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Fund, ei<strong>the</strong>r to <strong>the</strong> Craven Student or to any o<strong>the</strong>r person engaged in such research, subject to any<br />

conditions <strong>the</strong>y may think fit. Such grants may include payments towards <strong>the</strong> maintenance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

recipients.<br />

11. The Board may delegate any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir functions concerning <strong>the</strong> Fund to a Committee not<br />

necessarily consisting wholly <strong>of</strong> members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Board.<br />

DAVID CRIGHTON FUND<br />

1. The sums subscribed in memory <strong>of</strong> David Crighton, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Applied Ma<strong>the</strong>matics and Master<br />

<strong>of</strong> Jesus College, shall form a fund called <strong>the</strong> David Crighton Fund, <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> which shall be used<br />

to assist persons at an early stage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir careers who are undertaking research in Applied Ma<strong>the</strong>matics<br />

in <strong>the</strong> fields <strong>of</strong> fluid mechanics, acoustics, waves, and vibration.<br />

2. The Fund shall be administered by a Board <strong>of</strong> Managers consisting <strong>of</strong>:<br />

(a) <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Applied Ma<strong>the</strong>matics and Theoretical Physics (or a duly appointed<br />

deputy) as Chairman;<br />

(b) <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Applied Ma<strong>the</strong>matics;<br />

(c) one person appointed by <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Applied Ma<strong>the</strong>matics and Theoretical<br />

Physics;<br />

(d) one person, who shall not normally be a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>, appointed by <strong>the</strong> Faculty<br />

Board <strong>of</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matics.<br />

The members appointed in classes (c) and (d) shall be appointed in <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term to serve for<br />

four years from 1 January following <strong>the</strong>ir appointment.<br />

3. The income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be used to provide up to four David Crighton Fellowships, elected<br />

by <strong>the</strong> Managers, in <strong>the</strong> fields set out in Regulation 1 each year. The purpose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fellowships shall<br />

be to enable persons studying for a higher degree or working in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> to visit o<strong>the</strong>r institutions<br />

and persons studying for a higher degree or working in o<strong>the</strong>r institutions to visit <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>. The<br />

tenure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fellowships shall be up to three months. The Managers shall give preference to candidates<br />

holding junior appointments (including Graduate Students).<br />

4. In <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term each year <strong>the</strong> Managers shall publish a notice giving <strong>the</strong> date by which,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> manner in which, applications are to be submitted.<br />

5. Any unexpended income in a financial year shall be ei<strong>the</strong>r added to <strong>the</strong> capital <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund or<br />

accumulated for use as income in future years, as <strong>the</strong> Managers may determine.<br />

CROSSE STUDENTSHIP<br />

1. The income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Crosse Fund shall be used to provide a Studentship for <strong>the</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>rance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy Scriptures in Hebrew and Greek, Ecclesiastical History, and Christian Theology.<br />

The value <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Studentship shall be such sum, within a range determined from time to time by <strong>the</strong><br />

Stat. E, X.<br />
