824 TRUST EMOLUMENTS<br />

Nomination <strong>of</strong><br />

candidates.<br />

Chancellor, or <strong>the</strong> President, as <strong>the</strong> case may be, <strong>of</strong> all Irish universities and university colleges, and<br />

invite <strong>the</strong>m to nominate candidates.<br />

6. A candidate must be nominated by <strong>the</strong> authorities <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> university or university college <strong>of</strong> which<br />

he or she is a member. Each candidate shall submit to <strong>the</strong> Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> Graduate Studies,<br />

so as to arrive by <strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong> which notice has been given by <strong>the</strong> Electors in accordance with Regulation<br />

5, evidence <strong>of</strong> character and qualifications toge<strong>the</strong>r with a statement <strong>of</strong> his or her school and university<br />

record and some account <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong> study or research which he or she intends to pursue at<br />

<strong>Cambridge</strong> if elected. A candidate who wishes to claim preference on account <strong>of</strong> being descended<br />

from an Irish landed proprietor shall submit such evidence as he or she thinks fit in support <strong>of</strong> such<br />

claim.<br />

7. Every Scholar who is not a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> shall become such before <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

term next after <strong>the</strong> election unless allowed by <strong>the</strong> Electors to defer admission to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> till a<br />

later date, and shall remain a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> during tenure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scholarship.<br />

8. Every Scholar shall be required to become a candidate for one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bachelor’s Degrees specified<br />

in Statute B, III, 1(a), or for <strong>the</strong> degree <strong>of</strong> Master <strong>of</strong> Law, or for a Diploma, or to undertake wholetime<br />

study and training for research. No Scholar shall systematically follow any business or pr<strong>of</strong>ession<br />

or engage in any educational or o<strong>the</strong>r work which in <strong>the</strong> opinion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Electors would interfere in<br />

any way with his or her course <strong>of</strong> study.<br />

9. A Scholarship shall be tenable for one year or two years or three years, as <strong>the</strong> Electors shall in<br />

each case determine.<br />

10. The value <strong>of</strong> each Scholarship shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Electors within a range approved<br />

from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council.<br />

11. The Scholars shall be paid quarterly, <strong>the</strong> payment for each quarter being made in advance, but<br />

<strong>the</strong> Electors may withhold payment at any time if <strong>the</strong>y are not satisfied with <strong>the</strong> diligence or progress<br />

<strong>of</strong> a Scholar.<br />

12. A Robert Gardiner Memorial Scholarship shall not without <strong>the</strong> permission <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Electors be<br />

held with any o<strong>the</strong>r Scholarship or Studentship in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>, with any <strong>of</strong>fice in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>, or<br />

with a stipendiary Fellowship <strong>of</strong> a College.<br />

OLIVER G ATTY FUND<br />

1. The money given to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> in memory <strong>of</strong> Oliver Gatty, M.A., <strong>of</strong> St John’s College, by<br />

his relatives and friends shall form a fund to be called <strong>the</strong> Oliver Gatty Fund, <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> which<br />

shall be used to support an Oliver Gatty Studentship in <strong>the</strong> fields <strong>of</strong> Biophysical and Colloid Science.<br />

2. The Student shall undertake whole-time study and training for research in <strong>the</strong> fields <strong>of</strong> Biophysical<br />

and Colloid Science.<br />

3. The Electors shall be <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Biochemistry and <strong>the</strong> Director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Wellcome/Cancer Research UK Gurdon Institute for <strong>the</strong> time being, and two persons appointed by <strong>the</strong><br />

Council in <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term to serve for three years from 1 January following <strong>the</strong>ir appointment,<br />

one on <strong>the</strong> nomination <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Council <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> School <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Biological Sciences and one on <strong>the</strong><br />

nomination <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Council <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> School <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Physical Sciences.<br />

4. The Studentship shall be held in a Department determined by <strong>the</strong> Electors after satisfying<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves that <strong>the</strong> necessary facilities are available for <strong>the</strong> Student’s work.<br />

5. The Studentship shall be open to graduates <strong>of</strong> all universities, preference being given to graduates<br />

<strong>of</strong> universities outside Great Britain.<br />

6. The Electors shall give not less than three months’ notice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir intention to proceed to an<br />

election, and <strong>the</strong> election shall be made not later than 31 July.<br />

7. The Electors shall take such steps as <strong>the</strong>y may think fit to assess <strong>the</strong> candidates’ capacities for<br />

training for research in <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Studentship.<br />

8. The Studentship shall be tenable for one, two, three or four years, as determined by <strong>the</strong> Electors;<br />

a student elected for a shorter period may have her or his studentship extended provided that <strong>the</strong> total<br />

tenure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Studentship shall not exceed four years.<br />

9. The Student, if not a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>, must become such as soon as practicable after<br />

his or her election.
