12. A Student during <strong>the</strong> tenure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Studentship shall undertake whole-time study and training<br />

for research and shall not systematically follow any business or pr<strong>of</strong>ession, but may, with <strong>the</strong> permission<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers, undertake a limited amount <strong>of</strong> teaching or demonstration for payment without<br />

suffering any deduction from <strong>the</strong> stipend <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Studentship, provided that such teaching or demonstration<br />

does not interfere with <strong>the</strong> Student’s whole-time study and training for research.<br />

13. A Student whose work has been <strong>of</strong> such exceptional promise that it would, in <strong>the</strong> opinion <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Managers, be clearly in <strong>the</strong> interests <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> objects <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> trust that he or she should continue to<br />

hold <strong>the</strong> Studentship may be re-elected for a second period not exceeding three years, and during that<br />

period shall undertake original research. In such a case a vacancy shall not be announced.<br />

14. A Student who has been re-elected for a second period may, with <strong>the</strong> permission <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers,<br />

undertake a limited amount <strong>of</strong> teaching or demonstration for payment without suffering any deduction<br />

from <strong>the</strong> stipend <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Studentship, provided that such teaching or demonstration does not interfere<br />

with <strong>the</strong> Student’s research. In publishing <strong>the</strong> results <strong>of</strong> investigations carried out during <strong>the</strong> tenure <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Studentship such a Student shall, so far as is practicable, use <strong>the</strong> title ‘Gwynaeth Pretty Research<br />

Student’.<br />

15. The Managers may, for contravention <strong>of</strong> or failure to fulfil <strong>the</strong>se regulations, remove a Student<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Studentship. If <strong>the</strong>y consider that, through any o<strong>the</strong>r cause, such as confirmed ill health, want<br />

<strong>of</strong> diligence, or moral turpitude, <strong>the</strong> Student is not fulfilling and is not likely to fulfil <strong>the</strong> objects <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Studentship, <strong>the</strong> Managers may, if <strong>the</strong>y see fit, remove <strong>the</strong> Student from <strong>the</strong> Studentship.<br />

PRICEWATERHOUSECOOPERS PRIZE IN ECONOMICS<br />

1. The sum made available annually by PricewaterhouseCoopers shall be used to provide a prize<br />

called <strong>the</strong> PricewaterhouseCoopers Prize in Economics.<br />

2. The prize shall be awarded by <strong>the</strong> Examiners for Part IIA <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Economics Tripos for an<br />

outstanding performance in that examination.<br />

PRINCE CONSORT PRIZE AND THIRLWALL PRIZE<br />

1. The investments constituting <strong>the</strong> Prince Consort Prize Fund, <strong>the</strong> Thirlwall Prize Fund, and <strong>the</strong><br />

Historical Essays Prize Fund shall form a single fund called <strong>the</strong> Prince Consort and Thirlwall Fund.<br />

2. The Managers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essors whose Pr<strong>of</strong>essorships are assigned to <strong>the</strong><br />

Faculty <strong>of</strong> History.<br />

3. The first charge on <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be <strong>the</strong> provision <strong>of</strong> a prize for a dissertation<br />

involving original historical research.<br />

4. The Prince Consort Prize shall be awarded in even-numbered years and <strong>the</strong> Thirlwall Prize in<br />

odd-numbered years. The value <strong>of</strong> each Prize shall be such sum, not exceeding half <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Fund, as shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Managers within a range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong><br />

Council.<br />

5. The second charge on <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be <strong>the</strong> provision <strong>of</strong> a bronze medal, which<br />

shall be awarded to <strong>the</strong> winner <strong>of</strong> a Prize.<br />

6. The Managers shall give notice <strong>of</strong> each Prize before <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> Full Michaelmas Term in <strong>the</strong><br />

academical year next preceding <strong>the</strong> year in which it is to be awarded.<br />

7. The Prizes shall be open to all graduates <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> and to all persons whose names are<br />

entered on <strong>the</strong> Register <strong>of</strong> Graduate Students, provided that <strong>the</strong>y have not attained <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> thirty<br />

years on <strong>the</strong> last day appointed for sending in dissertations, and provided also that no previous winner<br />

<strong>of</strong> ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> Prince Consort Prize or <strong>the</strong> Thirlwall Prize shall be eligible to compete.<br />

8. Each dissertation shall be on a subject selected by <strong>the</strong> candidate and approved by <strong>the</strong> Managers.<br />

Candidates shall submit <strong>the</strong> titles <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir proposed subjects to <strong>the</strong> Registrary not later than 15 May in<br />

<strong>the</strong> academical year next preceding <strong>the</strong> award. The Registrary shall communicate <strong>the</strong> proposed subjects<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Managers.<br />

9. Between 15 May and 15 July in each year <strong>the</strong> Regius Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> History shall call a meeting<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers to consider <strong>the</strong> subjects submitted for dissertations and to elect two or more persons,<br />

at least one <strong>of</strong> whom shall be chosen from among <strong>the</strong> Managers, to act as Adjudicators for <strong>the</strong> ensuing<br />

academical year. Each Adjudicator shall receive from <strong>the</strong> Fund a payment equal to <strong>the</strong> fee that is paid<br />

Fund.<br />
