whe<strong>the</strong>r to award <strong>the</strong> applicant a Studentship for a period <strong>of</strong> not more than one year or a grant to<br />

support his or her research. The stipend <strong>of</strong> a Student shall be such sum as shall be determined by <strong>the</strong><br />

Managers within a range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council, and shall be payable in equal<br />

half-yearly instalments (each payment to be made in advance), provided as regards <strong>the</strong> second payment<br />

that <strong>the</strong> Managers be satisfied that <strong>the</strong> Student is diligently carrying out his or her course <strong>of</strong> research.<br />

DAVID RICHARDS FUND AND TRAVEL SCHOLARSHIPS<br />

1. The sum bequea<strong>the</strong>d to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> by <strong>the</strong> late Miss K. Richards shall form a fund to be called<br />

<strong>the</strong> David Richards Fund, <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> which shall be used to provide annually a number <strong>of</strong> David<br />

Richards Travel Scholarships.<br />

2. The Scholarships shall be open to British-born students who are reading ei<strong>the</strong>r for Part IB or for<br />

<strong>the</strong> Preliminary Examination for Part II <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geographical Tripos.<br />

3. The name <strong>of</strong> a candidate, toge<strong>the</strong>r with a concise statement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> purpose and plan <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

proposed travel, shall be sent by <strong>the</strong> candidate’s Tutor so as to reach <strong>the</strong> Registrary not later than <strong>the</strong><br />

end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> second week <strong>of</strong> Full Easter Term.<br />

4. The Awarders shall be <strong>the</strong> Managers <strong>of</strong> Philip Lake Fund II.<br />

5. The number <strong>of</strong> Scholarships to be awarded and <strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong> each shall be determined in each<br />

year by <strong>the</strong> Awarders. If in any year <strong>the</strong> Awarders are <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> opinion that none <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> candidates is<br />

deserving <strong>of</strong> a Scholarship, no award shall be made in that year.<br />

6. The Scholarships shall be awarded not later than <strong>the</strong> last day <strong>of</strong> May, and <strong>the</strong> names <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

successful candidates and <strong>the</strong> values <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> awards shall be communicated by <strong>the</strong> Awarders to <strong>the</strong><br />

Registrary by <strong>the</strong> first day <strong>of</strong> June. The names, but not <strong>the</strong> values <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> awards, shall be published in<br />

<strong>the</strong> Reporter.<br />

7. The emolument <strong>of</strong> a Scholar shall be paid, upon his or her Tutor’s application, in <strong>the</strong> term<br />

preceding <strong>the</strong> vacation in which <strong>the</strong> Scholar intends to travel.<br />

8. Travel shall normally take place not later than <strong>the</strong> Long Vacation in <strong>the</strong> year following <strong>the</strong> year<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> award, but <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Geography may, upon application by <strong>the</strong> Scholar’s<br />

Tutor, allow it to take place at a later date.<br />

9. These regulations may be altered by Grace, provided always that <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be called <strong>the</strong><br />

David Richards Fund and shall be used to provide a Scholarship or Scholarships to be awarded at <strong>the</strong><br />

end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir first year <strong>of</strong> residence to British-born students who are reading for <strong>the</strong> Geographical Tripos.<br />

RIDGEWAY-VENN TRAVEL FUND<br />

1. The sum bequea<strong>the</strong>d to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> by Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Sir William Ridgeway, formerly Disney<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Archaeology, and by his daughter, Mrs Lucy Venn, shall form a fund to be called <strong>the</strong><br />

Ridgeway-Venn Travel Fund.<br />

2. The first charge on <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be <strong>the</strong> maintenance and repair <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sundial<br />

bequea<strong>the</strong>d to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> by Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Sir William Ridgeway.<br />

3. After provision has been made for <strong>the</strong> maintenance and repair <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sundial in accordance with<br />

Regulation 2 <strong>the</strong> remaining income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be used to provide one or more Ridgeway-Venn<br />

Travel Studentships to help students <strong>of</strong> archaeology or anthropology to advance knowledge in <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

subjects, preference being given alternately to a student <strong>of</strong> archaeology and a student <strong>of</strong> anthropology;<br />

provided that no Studentship shall be <strong>of</strong>fered in any year in which less than £50 is available in <strong>the</strong><br />

Fund for that purpose.<br />

4. The Awarders shall be <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Human, Social, and Political Science. They may<br />

delegate any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir functions relating to <strong>the</strong> award to a committee consisting <strong>of</strong> members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Board.<br />

5. A Notice inviting applications for Studentships shall be published by <strong>the</strong> Awarders before<br />

31 January.<br />

6. Any member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> in statu pupillari shall be eligible provided that:<br />

ei<strong>the</strong>r (a) on <strong>the</strong> day on which <strong>the</strong> travel is due to begin <strong>the</strong> student will have completed <strong>the</strong> requirements<br />

for <strong>the</strong> B.A. Degree having obtained honours in at least one Part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Archaeological and<br />

Anthropological Tripos; and provided that <strong>the</strong> student intends to complete <strong>the</strong> travel before
