11. Any unexpended income accumulated in <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be applied at <strong>the</strong> discretion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Electors for <strong>the</strong> encouragement <strong>of</strong> research in Botany in such ways as <strong>the</strong>y shall from time to time<br />
determine.<br />
12. These regulations, except Regulation 1, shall be subject to alteration by Grace, but so always<br />
that <strong>the</strong> principal object <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund, namely, <strong>the</strong> encouragement <strong>of</strong> research in Botany, shall be<br />

FRANK SMART PRIZES<br />
1. The annual income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Frank Smart Prize Fund shall be used to provide a Frank Smart Prize<br />
for Botany and a Frank Smart Prize for Zoology.<br />
2. The value <strong>of</strong> each Prize shall be half <strong>the</strong> annual income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund.<br />
3. The Prizes shall be awarded by a Board consisting <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Regius Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Botany, <strong>the</strong><br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Zoology, and <strong>the</strong> Examiners in Plant Sciences and Zoology for <strong>the</strong> Natural Sciences<br />
Tripos <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> year in which <strong>the</strong> award is made.<br />
No business shall be transacted unless three members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Board be present.<br />
4. The Prize for Botany shall be awarded in June <strong>of</strong> each year to that member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />
who, having passed Part IB <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Natural Sciences Tripos and not being <strong>of</strong> more than ten terms’<br />
standing, is in <strong>the</strong> opinion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Board most pr<strong>of</strong>icient in <strong>the</strong> Science <strong>of</strong> Botany. The Prize for Zoology<br />
shall be awarded in June <strong>of</strong> each year to that member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> who, having passed Part II <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Natural Sciences Tripos and not being <strong>of</strong> more than thirteen terms’ standing, is in <strong>the</strong> opinion <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Board most pr<strong>of</strong>icient in <strong>the</strong> Science <strong>of</strong> Zoology.<br />
5. Nei<strong>the</strong>r Prize shall be awarded more than once to <strong>the</strong> same candidate.<br />
6. In case no person be deemed worthy <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prizes <strong>the</strong> sum available for that Prize shall<br />
be added to <strong>the</strong> capital <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund.<br />
7. These regulations shall be subject to alteration by Grace, but so always that <strong>the</strong> principal object<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund, namely, <strong>the</strong> encouragement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> Botany and Zoology in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>, shall<br />
be maintained.<br />

ADAM SMITH PRIZE ENDOWMENT FUND<br />
1. Two Adam Smith Prizes shall be awarded annually by <strong>the</strong> Examiners for Part IIB <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Economics<br />
Tripos, as follows:<br />
(a) <strong>the</strong> Adam Smith Prize shall be awarded for <strong>the</strong> best overall performance in Part IIB;<br />
(b) <strong>the</strong> Adam Smith Dissertation Prize shall be awarded for <strong>the</strong> best dissertation submitted by a<br />
candidate for Part IIB.<br />
2. The value <strong>of</strong> each Prize shall be one quarter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> annual income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund.<br />
3. In awarding <strong>the</strong> Prizes <strong>the</strong> Examiners shall be governed chiefly by <strong>the</strong> quality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> work done,<br />
and shall have regard to <strong>the</strong> candidates’ constructive ability and <strong>the</strong>ir grasp <strong>of</strong> scientific principles<br />
ra<strong>the</strong>r than to <strong>the</strong> erudition displayed.<br />
4. After provision has been made, in accordance with <strong>the</strong> foregoing regulations, for <strong>the</strong> award <strong>of</strong><br />
Adam Smith Prizes, <strong>the</strong> balance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> annual income and any unexpended income accumulated in <strong>the</strong><br />
Fund shall be applied from time to time at <strong>the</strong> discretion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Economics, on <strong>the</strong><br />
recommendation <strong>of</strong> a committee <strong>of</strong> Managers consisting <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chairman and <strong>the</strong> Secretary for <strong>the</strong><br />
time being <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Degree Committee for <strong>the</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> Economics and one o<strong>the</strong>r person appointed for<br />
a period <strong>of</strong> three years from 1 January by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Economics, for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> making<br />
grants to registered Graduate Students who are following a course <strong>of</strong> research in Economics and are<br />
in need <strong>of</strong> financial assistance. In considering a student for <strong>the</strong> award <strong>of</strong> a grant from <strong>the</strong> Fund, <strong>the</strong><br />
Board and <strong>the</strong> Managers shall have regard to evidence not only <strong>of</strong> financial hardship but also <strong>of</strong><br />
academic merit.<br />
5. It shall be open to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>, on <strong>the</strong> recommendation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Economics,<br />
to alter <strong>the</strong>se regulations from time to time provided that<br />
(a) <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be devoted to <strong>the</strong> encouragement <strong>of</strong> study or research in Economics;<br />
(b) any Prize provided from <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be entitled an Adam Smith Prize and shall be awarded<br />
in accordance with <strong>the</strong> provisions <strong>of</strong> Regulation 3.
