P.W. BRIAN FUND<br />

1. The gift <strong>of</strong> Mrs Margaret Brian in memory <strong>of</strong> her husband Percy Wragg Brian, <strong>of</strong> Queens’<br />

College, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Botany, shall form a fund <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> which shall be used to provide an award<br />

called <strong>the</strong> P. W. Brian Award in Botany.<br />

2. The Award shall be made each year before <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Long Vacation by <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Department <strong>of</strong> Plant Sciences to a person who has achieved a distinguished performance in <strong>the</strong><br />

execution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> research project in <strong>the</strong> subject Plant Sciences in Part II <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Natural Sciences Tripos<br />

and who intends to proceed to advanced study or research in any field <strong>of</strong> plant sciences.<br />

3. The value <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Award shall be <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund. The sum paid shall be spent on <strong>the</strong><br />

purchase <strong>of</strong> books or o<strong>the</strong>r materials selected by <strong>the</strong> winner <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Award, subject to <strong>the</strong> approval <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department.<br />

4. If in any year no award is made <strong>the</strong> income for that year shall be added to <strong>the</strong> capital <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Fund.<br />

BRITISH PETROLEUM CHEMISTRY FUND<br />

1. The sum <strong>of</strong> £1.5m received from British Petroleum plc for <strong>the</strong> support <strong>of</strong> work in Chemistry<br />

shall form a fund called <strong>the</strong> British Petroleum Chemistry Fund. The Managers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be:<br />

(a) <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Chemistry, who shall be <strong>the</strong> Chairman;<br />

(b) <strong>the</strong> BP Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Chemistry;<br />

(c) a person appointed by British Petroleum plc.<br />

2. The first charge on <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be <strong>the</strong> stipend, national insurance, and pension<br />

contributions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> BP Pr<strong>of</strong>essor payable by <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>.<br />

3. After provision has been made in accordance with Regulation 2, <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be applied for<br />

<strong>the</strong> support <strong>of</strong> teaching or research in Chemistry within <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Chemistry in such manner<br />

as shall be approved by <strong>the</strong> General Board on <strong>the</strong> recommendation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers.<br />

4. Any unexpended income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund in a financial year may be expended in a subsequent year<br />

in accordance with Regulation 3.<br />

JACOB BRONOWSKI FUND<br />

1. The gift <strong>of</strong> Mrs Rita Bronowski, in memory <strong>of</strong> her husband, Jacob Bronowski, M.A., Ph.D.,<br />

Honorary Fellow <strong>of</strong> Jesus College, shall form a Fund called <strong>the</strong> Jacob Bronowski Fund, <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong><br />

which shall be used to encourage <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> history and philosophy <strong>of</strong> science in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>.<br />

2. There shall be a Jacob Bronowski Prize to be awarded annually by <strong>the</strong> Examiners appointed for<br />

<strong>the</strong> subject History and Philosophy <strong>of</strong> Science in Part II <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Natural Sciences Tripos to a candidate<br />

who has shown distinction in that examination.<br />

3. The value <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prize shall be <strong>the</strong> annual income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund.<br />

4. If in any year <strong>the</strong> Prize is not awarded <strong>the</strong> income for that year shall be added to <strong>the</strong> capital <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Fund.<br />

BROODBANK FUND AND FELLOWSHIPS<br />

1. The sum bequea<strong>the</strong>d to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> by <strong>the</strong> late Maud Mary Lady Broodbank shall form a fund<br />

called <strong>the</strong> Broodbank Fund, which shall be used for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> providing <strong>the</strong> stipends, pension<br />

contributions, and expenses <strong>of</strong> one or more Broodbank Fellows, with <strong>the</strong> object <strong>of</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>ring research<br />

in Biochemistry or Biophysics with special reference to <strong>the</strong> principles and practice <strong>of</strong> food preservation.<br />

2. The Fund shall be administered and <strong>the</strong> Fellows elected by a Board <strong>of</strong> Managers, <strong>the</strong> members<br />

<strong>of</strong> which shall be <strong>the</strong> Heads <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Departments <strong>of</strong> Biochemistry, Plant Sciences, and Physiology,<br />

Development, and Neuroscience, <strong>the</strong> Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research<br />

Council or his or her nominee, and one o<strong>the</strong>r person nominated by <strong>the</strong> Managers and appointed by <strong>the</strong><br />

Council in <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term to serve for four years from 1 January following <strong>the</strong>ir appointment.<br />

3. No resolution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers shall be valid unless approved by at least six <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m at a meeting<br />

to which <strong>the</strong>y have all been summoned, save that a resolution circulated to and signed by all <strong>the</strong><br />

Managers shall have <strong>the</strong> same validity as a resolution carried at a meeting.
