2. The capital and income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be applied as <strong>the</strong> Cavendish Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Physics may<br />

from time to time decide:<br />

(a) to enable a Graduate Student in <strong>the</strong> Cavendish Laboratory to continue research at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

period for which he or she was originally awarded an emolument if in <strong>the</strong> opinion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

<strong>the</strong> particular project merits such support;<br />

(b) to defray <strong>the</strong> expenses <strong>of</strong> Graduate Students and o<strong>the</strong>r research workers in <strong>the</strong> Cavendish<br />

Laboratory when attending conferences or visiting or working in o<strong>the</strong>r laboratories outside<br />

<strong>Cambridge</strong>;<br />

(c) to contribute to <strong>the</strong> cost <strong>of</strong> any project which, in <strong>the</strong> opinion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cavendish Pr<strong>of</strong>essor, would<br />

be <strong>of</strong> lasting benefit to <strong>the</strong> Cavendish Laboratory and would appropriately commemorate <strong>the</strong><br />

name and work <strong>of</strong> James Clerk Maxwell.<br />

Application.<br />

CLERK MAXWELL SCHOLARSHIP<br />

Endowments, 1904, p. 340<br />

1. The income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Clerk Maxwell Fund shall be used to maintain one or more Clerk Maxwell<br />

Scholarships in connection with <strong>the</strong> Cavendish Laboratory, for <strong>the</strong> advancement by original research<br />

<strong>of</strong> Experimental Physics, especially Electricity, Magnetism, and Heat.<br />

2. The person elected to <strong>the</strong> Scholarship shall be called <strong>the</strong> Clerk Maxwell Student in Experimental<br />

Physics.<br />

3. Any member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> who has been a student for one term or more in <strong>the</strong> Cavendish<br />

Laboratory shall be eligible for <strong>the</strong> Scholarship.<br />

4. The Electors to <strong>the</strong> Scholarship shall be <strong>the</strong> Cavendish Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Physics and <strong>the</strong> Lucasian<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matics, and in case <strong>of</strong> any difference <strong>of</strong> opinion between <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> final decision<br />

shall rest with <strong>the</strong> Master <strong>of</strong> Trinity College or with someone specially appointed by <strong>the</strong> Master for<br />

this purpose.<br />

5. In case a deputy shall be appointed to discharge <strong>the</strong> duties <strong>of</strong> ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> two Pr<strong>of</strong>essors<br />

aforesaid, such deputy shall, for all <strong>the</strong> purposes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se regulations, take <strong>the</strong> place and exercise <strong>the</strong><br />

powers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor concerned, during such time as he or she may be acting as such deputy.<br />

6. The Electors in electing <strong>the</strong> Scholar shall be guided by <strong>the</strong> promise shown by <strong>the</strong> candidates <strong>of</strong><br />

capacity for original research in Experimental Physics, and shall take such steps as <strong>the</strong>y may think<br />

desirable to enable <strong>the</strong>m to form a judgement <strong>of</strong> such promise.<br />

7. The Scholar so elected shall undertake under <strong>the</strong> direction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cavendish Pr<strong>of</strong>essor original<br />

research in Experimental Physics within <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>, but may carry on research elsewhere with <strong>the</strong><br />

written permission <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cavendish Pr<strong>of</strong>essor.<br />

8. The commencing date and duration <strong>of</strong> tenure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scholarship shall be determined by <strong>the</strong><br />

Electors, and <strong>the</strong> holder shall be eligible for re-election, provided that a Scholar’s total tenure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Scholarship shall not exceed three years.<br />

9. The stipend <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scholar shall be such sum not exceeding <strong>the</strong> available income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund as<br />

may be determined by <strong>the</strong> Electors, within a range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council, after<br />

<strong>the</strong>y have taken account <strong>of</strong> any o<strong>the</strong>r financial resources that may be available to <strong>the</strong> Scholar. The<br />

stipend shall be paid to <strong>the</strong> Scholar in equal quarterly instalments in advance.<br />

10. The Scholar shall not during <strong>the</strong> tenure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scholarship systematically follow any business<br />

or pr<strong>of</strong>ession or engage in any educational or o<strong>the</strong>r work which in <strong>the</strong> opinion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cavendish and<br />

Lucasian Pr<strong>of</strong>essors would interfere with his or her duties as Scholar.<br />

11. If <strong>the</strong> Cavendish Pr<strong>of</strong>essor and <strong>the</strong> Lucasian Pr<strong>of</strong>essor shall be <strong>of</strong> opinion that <strong>the</strong> Scholar by<br />

engaging in some business or occupation or from confirmed ill health or want <strong>of</strong> diligence, or from<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r causes, is not fulfilling <strong>the</strong> conditions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scholarship, <strong>the</strong>y shall report <strong>the</strong>ir opinion to <strong>the</strong><br />

Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Physics and Chemistry, and <strong>the</strong> Board may <strong>the</strong>n if <strong>the</strong>y see fit remove <strong>the</strong> Scholar<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Scholarship.<br />

12. Not later than one month before <strong>the</strong> date at which in due course <strong>the</strong> Scholarship becomes vacant<br />

or immediately upon <strong>the</strong> occurrence <strong>of</strong> any casual vacancy <strong>the</strong> Cavendish Pr<strong>of</strong>essor shall give such<br />

public notice <strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong> as <strong>the</strong> Electors may think desirable. The election shall be made as soon after <strong>the</strong><br />

vacancy as is practicable, and <strong>the</strong> result communicated to <strong>the</strong> Vice-Chancellor for publication.<br />

13. Any unexpended income accumulated in <strong>the</strong> Fund may be applied from time to time on <strong>the</strong><br />

recommendation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cavendish Pr<strong>of</strong>essor to meet travelling and o<strong>the</strong>r expenses consistent with <strong>the</strong><br />
