JOHN STANLEY G ARDINER STUDENTSHIPS<br />
1. The sum bequea<strong>the</strong>d to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> by Pr<strong>of</strong>essor John Stanley Gardiner shall constitute a fund<br />
called <strong>the</strong> John Stanley Gardiner Fund, <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> which shall be used for <strong>the</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>rance <strong>of</strong><br />
research in Zoology by <strong>the</strong> endowment <strong>of</strong> Studentships to be called John Stanley Gardiner Studentships.<br />
2. The administration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be entrusted to three Managers in conjunction with <strong>the</strong><br />
Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Biology, which Faculty Board is hereinafter called <strong>the</strong> Board. The Managers, who<br />
may or may not be members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Board, shall be appointed by <strong>the</strong> Board in <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term<br />
to serve for five years from 1 January following <strong>the</strong>ir appointment. All <strong>the</strong> powers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers<br />
may be exercised by a majority <strong>of</strong> those present at a meeting, provided that two Managers at least be<br />
present.<br />
3. The Studentships shall be open to any British subject or Commonwealth citizen who is ordinarily<br />
resident outside Europe but within <strong>the</strong> Commonwealth <strong>of</strong> Nations.<br />
4. Elections to Studentships shall be made in <strong>the</strong> manner provided for by <strong>the</strong> regulations for <strong>the</strong><br />
Balfour Studentship, and Regulations 5–10 for that Studentship shall be applicable to <strong>the</strong>m.<br />
5. A Student who is not a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> must become such before <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> term<br />
next after <strong>the</strong> election and must remain such during his or her tenure.<br />
6. During <strong>the</strong> tenure <strong>of</strong> a Studentship a Student shall normally be required to undertake full-time<br />
study and research, but it shall be within <strong>the</strong> powers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers to substitute for <strong>the</strong>se requirements<br />
<strong>the</strong> obligation <strong>of</strong> a Student to undertake full-time study and training for research.<br />
7. If <strong>the</strong> Managers shall be <strong>of</strong> opinion that through any cause a Student is not fulfilling and is not<br />
likely to fulfil <strong>the</strong> objects <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Studentship <strong>the</strong>y shall report accordingly to <strong>the</strong> Board, and <strong>the</strong> Board<br />
may, if <strong>the</strong>y see fit, remove such Student from <strong>the</strong> Studentship.<br />
8. The Student shall study in <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Zoology unless o<strong>the</strong>rwise authorized by <strong>the</strong><br />
Managers. The Managers shall take such steps as <strong>the</strong>y think necessary to satisfy <strong>the</strong>mselves as to <strong>the</strong><br />
diligence and progress <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Student and may require from <strong>the</strong> Student any reports or o<strong>the</strong>r information<br />
on <strong>the</strong> subject <strong>of</strong> his or her studies which <strong>the</strong>y may think desirable.<br />
9. The initial tenure <strong>of</strong> a Studentship shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Managers but shall not exceed<br />
three years. A Student whose work shall have been <strong>of</strong> such exceptional promise that it would, in <strong>the</strong><br />
opinion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Board, be clearly in <strong>the</strong> interest <strong>of</strong> zoological research that he or<br />
she should continue to hold <strong>the</strong> Studentship for a second term <strong>of</strong> three years or for a part <strong>of</strong> such term,<br />
may be re-elected.<br />
10. The value <strong>of</strong> a Studentship shall be <strong>the</strong> annual or accumulated income derived from <strong>the</strong> capital<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund or such smaller sum as may be determined by <strong>the</strong> Managers and paid to <strong>the</strong> Student in<br />
advance by equal quarterly instalments.<br />

ROBERT G ARDINER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS<br />
1. The sums bequea<strong>the</strong>d to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> by Miss Susan Gardiner and Miss Margaret Gardiner<br />
shall be known as <strong>the</strong> Mary, Susan, and Margaret Gardiner Benefaction in memory <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir bro<strong>the</strong>r<br />
Robert, and shall form two separate funds called <strong>the</strong> Susan Gardiner Fund and <strong>the</strong> Margaret Gardiner<br />
Fund.<br />
2. The income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> benefaction shall be applied in assisting or enabling graduates or undergraduates<br />
<strong>of</strong> Trinity College, Dublin, or o<strong>the</strong>r Irish universities to proceed to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cambridge</strong> for<br />
<strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> undergraduate or postgraduate study by maintaining one or more scholarships to be<br />
called Robert Gardiner Memorial Scholarships.<br />
3. A member <strong>of</strong> any Irish university shall be eligible for a Scholarship, but in <strong>the</strong> event <strong>of</strong> two or<br />
more candidates showing equal merit, <strong>the</strong> Electors shall have regard to <strong>the</strong> wishes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> foundresses<br />
that preference shall be given to gifted students <strong>of</strong> literature, to undergraduates or graduates <strong>of</strong> Trinity<br />
College, Dublin, and to <strong>the</strong> descendants <strong>of</strong> Irish landed proprietors.<br />
4. The Electors shall be <strong>the</strong> Vice-Chancellor and four members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Senate appointed in <strong>the</strong><br />
Michaelmas Term, two by <strong>the</strong> Council and two by <strong>the</strong> General Board, to serve for four years from<br />
1 January following <strong>the</strong>ir appointment.<br />
5. If it is intended to make an election in any year, <strong>the</strong> Electors shall, not later than 30 November<br />
in <strong>the</strong> preceding year, give public notice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> date by which applications for a Scholarship shall be<br />
made. They shall at <strong>the</strong> same time take such steps as <strong>the</strong>y think fit to inform <strong>the</strong> Provost, <strong>the</strong> Vice-<br />
