1. There shall be a Scholarship to be called <strong>the</strong> Harkness Scholarship, which shall be awarded<br />

annually for pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in Geology, including <strong>the</strong>rein Palaeontology.<br />

2. Any member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> shall be eligible to <strong>the</strong> Scholarship who has passed some final<br />

examination for <strong>the</strong> degree <strong>of</strong> Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts provided that on <strong>the</strong> day <strong>of</strong> election not more than<br />

three years have elapsed since 19 December next following <strong>the</strong> said final examination.<br />

3. The Managers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Earth Sciences and three<br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficers in <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Earth Sciences, appointed by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Earth<br />

Sciences and Geography in <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term to serve for three years from 1 January following<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir appointment.<br />

4. A Scholar shall be elected in <strong>the</strong> month <strong>of</strong> June each year by a Board <strong>of</strong> Electors consisting <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Managers and <strong>the</strong> Examiners in Geological Sciences for Part II <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Natural Sciences Tripos for<br />

that year and those for <strong>the</strong> preceding year. No business shall be transacted unless five members at least<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Board be present.<br />

5. The names <strong>of</strong> candidates shall be made known to <strong>the</strong> Registrary not later than 31 May in each<br />

year.<br />

6. In making <strong>the</strong> award <strong>the</strong> Electors shall have regard to pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in Geology, including <strong>the</strong>rein<br />

Palaeontology, and to promise <strong>of</strong> future work.<br />

7. The Electors shall have authority to take any steps <strong>the</strong>y think advisable to enable <strong>the</strong>m to ascertain<br />

<strong>the</strong> qualifications <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> candidates; any necessary expenses incurred by <strong>the</strong>m in so doing shall be<br />

charged to <strong>the</strong> Fund.<br />

8. It shall be <strong>the</strong> duty <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scholar during <strong>the</strong> academical year <strong>of</strong> tenure to undertake research in<br />

Geology or Palaeontology ei<strong>the</strong>r in <strong>Cambridge</strong> or elsewhere under <strong>the</strong> direction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Department <strong>of</strong> Earth Sciences or some person approved by <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department.<br />

9. The first charge on <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be <strong>the</strong> stipend <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scholar. The stipend shall<br />

be such sum as shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Managers in each case, taking account <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r financial<br />

resources which may be available to <strong>the</strong> Scholar, within a range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong><br />

Council. The stipend shall be paid in two half-yearly instalments in advance. The second instalment<br />

shall not be paid unless <strong>the</strong> Managers are satisfied that <strong>the</strong> Scholar has been pursuing his or her studies<br />

with sufficient diligence.<br />

10. The Managers may make grants from <strong>the</strong> balance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> annual income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund to assist a<br />

Scholar during <strong>the</strong> year <strong>of</strong> his or her tenure, and from any unexpended income accumulated in <strong>the</strong><br />

Fund to assist any former Scholar or Scholars in prosecuting geological or palaeontological researches,<br />

subject to a maximum total value <strong>of</strong> grants to any person determined by <strong>the</strong> Managers with <strong>the</strong> approval<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Council. No grant shall be paid to a former Scholar later than three years after <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

academical year <strong>of</strong> his or her tenure, nor shall any grant be paid to a former Scholar unless he or she<br />

continues to undertake research in Geology or Palaeontology ei<strong>the</strong>r in <strong>Cambridge</strong> or elsewhere under<br />

<strong>the</strong> direction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Earth Sciences or some person appointed by <strong>the</strong> Head<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department.<br />

HARNESS PRIZE<br />

1. The Prize shall be <strong>of</strong>fered annually. The value <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prize shall be <strong>the</strong> annual income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Fund after <strong>the</strong> expenses <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> award have been met.<br />

2. The Prize shall be given to <strong>the</strong> author <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> best English essay on a subject connected with<br />

Shakespearian literature, such author being ei<strong>the</strong>r an undergraduate or a postgraduate student.<br />

3. The Prize shall be adjudged by two persons nominated by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> English for<br />

appointment in <strong>the</strong> Lent Term. Each Adjudicator shall receive from <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund, except<br />

when no essay is sent in, such amount as may be determined by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board within a range<br />

approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council.<br />

4. The Adjudicators shall select and announce a subject for <strong>the</strong> essay in <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term each<br />

year. A candidate who wishes to submit an essay on a subject connected with Shakespearian literature<br />

<strong>of</strong> his or her own choosing shall so inform <strong>the</strong> Registrary not later than <strong>the</strong> first day <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Full Lent
