2. The administration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be entrusted to four Electors who shall be <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Department <strong>of</strong> Spanish and Portuguese and three persons appointed by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Modern<br />

and Medieval Languages in <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term to serve for three years from 1 January following<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir appointment. Three Electors shall form a quorum.<br />

3. There shall be established a scholarship to be called <strong>the</strong> Gibson Spanish Scholarship. It shall be<br />

<strong>the</strong> duty <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scholar to undertake advanced study or research in Spanish Literature, according to a<br />

scheme to be approved by <strong>the</strong> Electors.<br />

4. The Scholarship shall be <strong>of</strong>fered in <strong>the</strong> Easter Term <strong>of</strong> every year and <strong>the</strong> Electors shall meet to<br />

consider <strong>the</strong> applications <strong>of</strong> candidates before <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> that term.<br />

5. The Scholarship shall be tenable for one, two, or three years, as determined by <strong>the</strong> Electors; a<br />

Scholar elected for one or two years shall be eligible for re-election, provided that <strong>the</strong> total tenure <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Scholarship shall not exceed three years.<br />

6. The Scholarship shall be open to any person who is, or is about to be, registered as a Graduate<br />

Student in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>. Election to and tenure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scholarship shall lapse if <strong>the</strong> person elected<br />

does not become or ceases to be a registered Graduate Student.<br />

7. Applications for <strong>the</strong> Studentship, in a form approved by <strong>the</strong> Electors, shall be submitted to <strong>the</strong><br />

Registrary by a date to be determined by <strong>the</strong> Electors.<br />

8. The Electors may take such steps as <strong>the</strong>y may think fit to inquire into <strong>the</strong> qualifications <strong>of</strong><br />

candidates, provided that <strong>the</strong> Scholarship shall not be awarded by competitive examination.<br />

9. The stipend <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scholar shall be such sum as shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Electors within a<br />

range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council. The stipend shall be paid in such instalments as<br />

shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Electors, provided that <strong>the</strong> Electors may withhold payment <strong>of</strong> any instalment<br />

if <strong>the</strong>y are not satisfied that <strong>the</strong> Scholar is pursuing his or her course <strong>of</strong> study or research with sufficient<br />

diligence.<br />

10. The Scholar shall not during <strong>the</strong> tenure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scholarship systematically follow any business<br />

or pr<strong>of</strong>ession or engage in educational or o<strong>the</strong>r work which in <strong>the</strong> opinion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Electors would in<br />

any way interfere with his or her course <strong>of</strong> research.<br />

11. Any accumulated income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund may be used from time to time at <strong>the</strong> discretion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Electors and subject to such conditions as <strong>the</strong>y may think fit<br />

(a) to provide <strong>the</strong> stipend <strong>of</strong> one or more additional Scholars;<br />

(b) to make grants to Scholars to assist <strong>the</strong>m in prosecuting <strong>the</strong>ir research.<br />

12. These regulations shall be subject to alteration by Grace, provided that <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund<br />

shall always be devoted to <strong>the</strong> endowment <strong>of</strong> a scholarship for <strong>the</strong> encouragement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong><br />

Spanish Literature in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>, to be called <strong>the</strong> Gibson Spanish Scholarship.<br />

GIRDLER FUND<br />

1. The capital sum received under <strong>the</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> will <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Ronald William Girdler, shall<br />

form a fund called <strong>the</strong> Girdler Fund.<br />

2. The Managers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be:<br />

(a) <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Earth Sciences, and<br />

(b) three persons appointed by <strong>the</strong> Departmental Committee <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Earth Sciences.<br />

Managers in class (b) shall be appointed in <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term to serve for four years from 1 January<br />

following <strong>the</strong>ir appointment.<br />

3. The income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be applied to support, by way <strong>of</strong> grants, graduate students wishing<br />

to pursue research in Geophysics, <strong>the</strong> application <strong>of</strong> Physics to problems in <strong>the</strong> Earth Sciences, in <strong>the</strong><br />

Department.<br />

4. Any unexpended income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund in a financial year may be ei<strong>the</strong>r added to <strong>the</strong> capital <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Fund or accumulated for use as income in future years, as <strong>the</strong> Managers shall determine.<br />

GLADSTONE MEMORIAL PRIZE<br />

Value.<br />

1. The Gladstone Memorial Prize <strong>of</strong> £250, or such greater sum as shall be provided by <strong>the</strong> Gladstone<br />

Memorial Trustees, shall be <strong>of</strong>fered each academical year.<br />

2. The Prize shall be awarded by three Adjudicators appointed by <strong>the</strong> General Board, who shall be<br />

paid by <strong>the</strong> Gladstone Memorial Trustees a sum approved by <strong>the</strong> Council. One Adjudicator shall be
