4. The Scholarship shall be open to any member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> who has kept at least eight terms 1<br />

and who is a candidate for or has been classed in ei<strong>the</strong>r Part IB or Part II <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Law Tripos in <strong>the</strong><br />

year <strong>of</strong> application.<br />

5. Every candidate shall apply to <strong>the</strong> Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Law not later than <strong>the</strong> day<br />

before <strong>the</strong> first day <strong>of</strong> General Admission to Degrees, and shall submit a statement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nature <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>r study or research that he or she proposes to undertake.<br />

6. The election shall be held each year at some convenient date within four weeks following <strong>the</strong><br />

first day <strong>of</strong> General Admission to Degrees. The Electors shall take whatever steps <strong>the</strong>y deem advisable,<br />

whe<strong>the</strong>r by consultation with any Tripos Examiners or o<strong>the</strong>rwise, to ascertain <strong>the</strong> merits <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

candidates and <strong>the</strong>ir qualifications for pursuing fur<strong>the</strong>r study or research in International Law. If <strong>the</strong><br />

available income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund is sufficient <strong>the</strong> Electors may elect a second Scholar.<br />

7. The Scholarship shall be tenable for one year from 1 October following <strong>the</strong> election and shall<br />

not be renewable.<br />

8. It shall be <strong>the</strong> duty <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scholar to undertake study or research in International Law. A Scholar<br />

shall not, during <strong>the</strong> tenure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scholarship, follow any such business or pr<strong>of</strong>ession or engage in<br />

any such educational or o<strong>the</strong>r work as in <strong>the</strong> opinion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Electors would interfere with his or her<br />

study.<br />

9. The amount <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> stipend <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scholarship shall be such sum within a range approved from<br />

time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council as <strong>the</strong> Electors shall determine in each case.<br />

10. The stipend <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scholar shall be paid in equal half-yearly instalments in advance; provided<br />

that <strong>the</strong> Electors may withhold <strong>the</strong> whole or part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> second instalment if <strong>the</strong>y are not satisfied that<br />

<strong>the</strong> Scholar is diligently pursuing his or her studies.<br />

11. These regulations, o<strong>the</strong>r than Regulation 1 and this regulation, may be altered by Grace on <strong>the</strong><br />

recommendation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Whewell Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> International Law and with <strong>the</strong> approval <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty<br />

Board <strong>of</strong> Law.<br />

ALASDAIR CHARLES MACPHERSON FUND<br />

1. The sum bequea<strong>the</strong>d to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> by <strong>the</strong> Reverend Ranald Macpherson shall form a fund to<br />

be called <strong>the</strong> Alasdair Charles Macpherson Fund.<br />

2. The Managers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Divinity. The Managers may delegate<br />

any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir functions concerning <strong>the</strong> Fund to a committee composed <strong>of</strong> members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board.<br />

3. The income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be applied from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Managers, and subject to such<br />

conditions as <strong>the</strong>y may think fit,<br />

(a) to make grants in aid to deserving students,<br />

(b) to make grants for research or travel,<br />

(c) to purchase books for <strong>the</strong> Libraries <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> Divinity,<br />

(d) for such o<strong>the</strong>r purposes as may be approved by <strong>the</strong> Managers.<br />

4. The beneficiaries <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be those persons only who are or have been students in <strong>the</strong><br />

Faculty <strong>of</strong> Divinity, and are <strong>of</strong> not more than ten years’ standing from <strong>the</strong>ir first degree.<br />

5. These regulations, except Regulations 1 and 4, shall be subject to alteration by Grace on <strong>the</strong><br />

recommendation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Divinity with <strong>the</strong> concurrence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> Divinity.<br />

MAINTENANCE GRANTS IN ENGINEERING FUND<br />

The income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Maintenance Grants in Engineering Fund shall be used, at <strong>the</strong> discretion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Degree Committee for <strong>the</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> Engineering, to make grants to postgraduate students working in<br />

<strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Engineering who are in need <strong>of</strong> financial assistance in connection with <strong>the</strong>ir studies<br />

in that Department.<br />

FREDERIC WILLIAM MAITLAND MEMORIAL FUND<br />

1. There shall be a fund in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> called <strong>the</strong> Frederic William Maitland Memorial Fund,<br />

which shall be devoted to <strong>the</strong> promotion <strong>of</strong> research and instruction in <strong>the</strong> History <strong>of</strong> Law and <strong>of</strong><br />

Legal Language and Institutions.<br />
