BROOKS FUND<br />
1. The sum bequea<strong>the</strong>d to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> by <strong>the</strong> late Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Frederick Tom Brooks shall constitute<br />
a fund called <strong>the</strong> Brooks Fund <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> which shall be to fur<strong>the</strong>r original research in Botany.<br />
2. The Managers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Plant Sciences, <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essors<br />
assigned to <strong>the</strong> Department, <strong>the</strong> Directors <strong>of</strong> Sub-departments in <strong>the</strong> Department, <strong>the</strong> person appointed<br />
by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Biology as an Elector to <strong>the</strong> Frank Smart Studentship, and one o<strong>the</strong>r person<br />
appointed by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board in <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term, on <strong>the</strong> nomination <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Department, to serve for four years from 1 January next following.<br />
3. The Managers shall have discretion to apply <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund for <strong>the</strong> purpose described<br />
in Regulation 1, by making grants to <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Plant Sciences, or to research workers working<br />
in that Department or at some o<strong>the</strong>r place approved by <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department.<br />
4. In making grants to research workers <strong>the</strong> Managers shall give preference<br />
(a) to persons who have been engaged in postgraduate research for not less than two years,<br />
and (b) to persons who are investigating problems in Mycology, Bacteriology, Plant Pathology, Plant<br />
Physiology, or Plant Ecology.<br />

BROTHERTON PRIZE<br />
1. The Bro<strong>the</strong>rton Prize shall be awarded by <strong>the</strong> Examiners for Part II <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Oriental Studies Tripos<br />
for distinction in South Asian Studies in that examination. If <strong>the</strong>re are two candidates <strong>of</strong> equal merit,<br />
preference shall be given to a candidate showing distinction in Sanskrit.<br />
2. The value <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prize shall be such sum as shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Asian<br />
and Middle Eastern Studies within a range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council.<br />
3. The Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Asian and Middle Eastern Studies shall be empowered, whenever <strong>the</strong><br />
Bro<strong>the</strong>rton Fund shows a sufficient balance,<br />
(a) to make an additional grant to <strong>the</strong> winner <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prize if, before <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> next Michaelmas<br />
Term, <strong>the</strong>y have received satisfactory assurance that he or she is engaged in some branch <strong>of</strong><br />
advanced study or research in South Asian Studies, and is making good progress in <strong>the</strong> subject<br />
chosen;<br />
(b) to make o<strong>the</strong>r grants for <strong>the</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>rance <strong>of</strong> research in South Asian Studies.<br />
4. Any unexpended income accumulated in <strong>the</strong> Fund may be used at <strong>the</strong> discretion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty<br />
Board <strong>of</strong> Asian and Middle Eastern Studies for <strong>the</strong> promotion and encouragement <strong>of</strong> South Asian<br />
Studies, with a preference for Sanskrit.<br />

BROWNE FUND AND MEDALS<br />

1. Four Medals on <strong>the</strong> foundation <strong>of</strong> Sir William Browne shall be <strong>of</strong>fered for competition every<br />
year; one for a Greek Ode or Elegy, one for a Latin Ode or Elegy, one for a Greek Epigram, and one<br />
for a Latin Epigram.<br />
2. Any resident undergraduate may be a candidate for any <strong>of</strong> Sir William Browne’s Medals.<br />
3. On or before 1 June in each year <strong>the</strong> Examiners shall announce subjects, and (if <strong>the</strong>y think fit)<br />
metres and limits <strong>of</strong> length, for <strong>the</strong> poems; and exercises must be sent to <strong>the</strong> Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty<br />
Board <strong>of</strong> Classics on or before 1 February in <strong>the</strong> following year.<br />
4. Each candidate shall send three copies <strong>of</strong> his or her exercise to <strong>the</strong> Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty<br />
Board. The exercise shall be in a printed or typewritten form; it shall bear a motto but not <strong>the</strong><br />
candidate’s name, and shall be accompanied by a sealed envelope bearing <strong>the</strong> same motto outside and<br />
containing <strong>the</strong> candidate’s name and College.<br />
5. The Medals shall be awarded by three Examiners nominated by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Classics<br />
and appointed by <strong>the</strong> General Board in <strong>the</strong> latter half <strong>of</strong> each Lent Term. The Examiners shall receive<br />
from <strong>the</strong> Browne Fund, unless no exercise is sent in, such amount as may be determined by <strong>the</strong> Faculty<br />
Board within a range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council.<br />
6. The cost <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Medals and <strong>the</strong>ir cases and <strong>the</strong> fees paid to <strong>the</strong> Examiners shall be <strong>the</strong> first charge<br />
on <strong>the</strong> Browne Fund. The second charge on <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be <strong>the</strong> provision <strong>of</strong> one or more Browne<br />
Scholarships. Any unexpended income accumulated in <strong>the</strong> Fund may be applied at <strong>the</strong> discretion <strong>of</strong>
