SHEILA JOAN SMITH RESEARCH FUND<br />

1. The benefaction to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> by Dr Herchel Smith <strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania shall form a fund to be<br />

known as <strong>the</strong> Sheila Joan Smith Research Fund.<br />

2. The income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be applied for such purposes in connection with medical studies<br />

and clinical research in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> as <strong>the</strong> Regius Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Physic for <strong>the</strong> time being shall in his<br />

or her absolute discretion select.<br />

3. Any unapplied balance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> annual income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be ei<strong>the</strong>r added to <strong>the</strong> capital <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Fund or accumulated for use as income in a subsequent year, as <strong>the</strong> Regius Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Physic<br />

may determine.<br />

SMITH-KNIGHT PRIZES AND RAYLEIGH-KNIGHT PRIZES<br />

Endowments, 1904, p. 93<br />

1. There shall be a Ma<strong>the</strong>matical Essay Prize Fund, to which shall be paid <strong>the</strong> annual income <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Smith Prize Fund (being that portion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Smith Fund which under <strong>the</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> Statute E,<br />

XXVIII, 2(b) is to be used to provide prizes in ma<strong>the</strong>matics and its applications), <strong>the</strong> Rayleigh Prize<br />

Fund, and <strong>the</strong> J. T. Knight Prize Fund. The income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matical Essay Prize Fund shall be<br />

used to provide one or more Smith-Knight Prizes and one or more Rayleigh-Knight Prizes each year<br />

for essays on any subject in ma<strong>the</strong>matics and its applications.<br />

2. The Prizes shall be open to:<br />

(a) any student who is a Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>, if at <strong>the</strong> latest date for <strong>the</strong> submission<br />

<strong>of</strong> essays at least three, but not more than five, complete terms have passed since <strong>the</strong> term <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> student’s admission as a Graduate Student o<strong>the</strong>r than as a candidate for <strong>the</strong> M.Phil. Degree<br />

or for a Diploma or, if <strong>the</strong> student is not a Graduate Student, since he or she last obtained<br />

honours in an Honours Examination or was approved for <strong>the</strong> M.Phil. Degree or for a Diploma;<br />

(b) any member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> who, not being a Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts, has been admitted as a<br />

Graduate Student o<strong>the</strong>r than as a candidate for <strong>the</strong> M.Phil. Degree or for a Diploma, if at <strong>the</strong><br />

latest date for <strong>the</strong> submission <strong>of</strong> essays at least three, but not more than five, complete terms<br />

have passed since <strong>the</strong> term <strong>of</strong> his or her admission.<br />

3. The Adjudicators <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prizes shall be <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essors assigned to <strong>the</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matics or<br />

to a Department within <strong>the</strong> Faculty. The Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matics shall have power to appoint a<br />

deputy for an Adjudicator who is unable to serve, provided that <strong>the</strong>y shall publish <strong>the</strong> appointment in<br />

<strong>the</strong> Reporter and that <strong>the</strong> deputy shall continue to serve until <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academical year in which<br />

he or she is appointed.<br />

4. Candidates shall send <strong>the</strong>ir essays to <strong>the</strong> Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matics not later<br />

than <strong>the</strong> first day <strong>of</strong> Full Lent Term. Each candidate shall state in a preface to <strong>the</strong> essay what portion<br />

<strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong> is claimed as original.<br />

5. The Adjudicators shall publish a single list <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> candidates whose essays <strong>the</strong>y judge to be <strong>of</strong><br />

distinction, giving <strong>the</strong> title <strong>of</strong> each candidate’s essay. The list shall be arranged in groups; in each<br />

group <strong>the</strong> candidates shall be <strong>of</strong> equal merit. In grouping <strong>the</strong> candidates, <strong>the</strong> Adjudicators may take<br />

into account relevant experience gained by any candidate before <strong>the</strong> first <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> terms which are<br />

required by Regulation 2 to have elapsed since <strong>the</strong> candidate obtained honours in an Honours<br />

Examination, or was approved for <strong>the</strong> M.Phil. Degree or for a Diploma, or was admitted as a Graduate<br />

Student o<strong>the</strong>r than as a candidate for <strong>the</strong> M.Phil. Degree or for a Diploma, as <strong>the</strong> case may be.<br />

6. The standard required for a Smith-Knight Prize shall be higher than <strong>the</strong> standard required for a<br />

Rayleigh-Knight Prize.<br />

7. The Smith-Knight Prizes in any year need not be <strong>of</strong> equal value, and <strong>the</strong> Rayleigh-Knight Prizes<br />

in any year need not be <strong>of</strong> equal value. The value <strong>of</strong> a Smith-Knight Prize in any year shall not exceed<br />

half <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Smith Prize Fund in that year, and <strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong> a Rayleigh-Knight Prize in any<br />

year shall not exceed <strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong> a Smith-Knight Prize in that year.<br />

8. The Prizes shall be awarded before <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Easter Term.
