STANTON LECTURESHIP IN THE PHILOSOPHY OF RELIGION<br />

Endowments, 1904, pp. 625–6<br />

1. The income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Stanton Fund shall be used for <strong>the</strong> provision <strong>of</strong> lectures in <strong>the</strong> Philosophy <strong>of</strong><br />

Religion. For this purpose <strong>the</strong>re shall be a Lectureship called <strong>the</strong> Stanton Lectureship in <strong>the</strong> Philosophy<br />

<strong>of</strong> Religion, and <strong>the</strong> Lecturer shall be called <strong>the</strong> Stanton Lecturer in <strong>the</strong> Philosophy <strong>of</strong> Religion. The<br />

Lectureship shall not be deemed a <strong>University</strong> Lectureship and may, subject to <strong>the</strong> provisions <strong>of</strong> Statutes<br />

D, XIV, 10 and D, XVII, 12, be held concurrently with a <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice.<br />

2. The Lecturer shall be appointed by a Board <strong>of</strong> Electors consisting <strong>of</strong>:<br />

(a) <strong>the</strong> Vice-Chancellor;<br />

(b) five o<strong>the</strong>r persons, one appointed by <strong>the</strong> General Board, three by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Divinity,<br />

and one by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Philosophy.<br />

Members in class (b) shall be appointed in <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term to serve for three years from 1 January<br />

following <strong>the</strong>ir appointment. No appointment <strong>of</strong> a Lecturer shall be made at any meeting at which less<br />

than four members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Board are present.<br />

3. The Lecturer shall hold <strong>of</strong>fice for such period not exceeding three academical years as shall be<br />

determined by <strong>the</strong> Electors, and shall deliver in each year during <strong>the</strong> tenure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lectureship not less<br />

than four and not more than eight lectures, <strong>the</strong> number to be determined by <strong>the</strong> Electors.<br />

4. Before <strong>the</strong> division <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Easter Term preceding each year <strong>of</strong> his or her tenure <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>the</strong><br />

Lecturer shall submit to <strong>the</strong> Faculty Boards <strong>of</strong> Divinity and Philosophy a statement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> term or<br />

terms in which he or she proposes to lecture during <strong>the</strong> ensuing academical year, and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> subjects<br />

to be treated in <strong>the</strong> lectures.<br />

5. The stipend <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lecturer shall be such sum as shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Electors on <strong>the</strong><br />

occasion <strong>of</strong> each election, subject to <strong>the</strong> approval <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General Board. Any balance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> net income<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Stanton Fund shall be applied to <strong>the</strong> teaching <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> philosophy <strong>of</strong> religion in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>, at<br />

<strong>the</strong> discretion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Electors and subject to <strong>the</strong> approval <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General Board.<br />

STARBRIDGE LECTURESHIP FUND<br />

1. The sum <strong>of</strong> £800,000, to be received from Mrs Susan Howatch over a period <strong>of</strong> four years for<br />

<strong>the</strong> endowment <strong>of</strong> a <strong>University</strong> Lectureship in Theology and Natural Science, entitled <strong>the</strong> Starbridge<br />

Lectureship, and any subsequent sum received for <strong>the</strong> same purpose, shall form a fund to be called<br />

<strong>the</strong> Starbridge Lectureship Fund.<br />

2. The stipend, national insurance, and pension contributions payable by <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> in respect<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Starbridge Lecturer in Theology and Natural Science shall be payable from <strong>the</strong> Fund.<br />

3. If and when <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall exceed <strong>the</strong> amount required for <strong>the</strong> payment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

stipend, national insurance, pension contributions, and associated indirect costs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Starbridge<br />

Lecturer payable by <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>, <strong>the</strong> excess <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> income over that amount may be applied in<br />

support <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Starbridge Lecturer in such manner as may be approved by <strong>the</strong> General<br />

Board on <strong>the</strong> recommendation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Divinity.<br />

4. Any unexpended income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund in a financial year may in any subsequent year be expended<br />

in accordance with Regulation 3.<br />

STEEL THEOLOGICAL STUDENTSHIPS<br />

1. The Managers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Steel Theological Studentships shall be <strong>the</strong> Regius Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Divinity<br />

and two members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> Divinity appointed by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Divinity in <strong>the</strong><br />

Michaelmas Term to hold <strong>of</strong>fice for two years from 1 January following <strong>the</strong>ir appointment.<br />

2. Before <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term each year <strong>the</strong> Managers shall give notice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> date by<br />

which and <strong>the</strong> manner in which application for Studentships shall be made.<br />

3. The Managers shall inform <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essors <strong>of</strong> Divinity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> names and financial circumstances<br />

<strong>of</strong> candidates whom <strong>the</strong>y recommend for nomination by <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essors for Studentships in accordance
