980 TRUST EMOLUMENTS<br />

Pathology, and shall not systematically follow any business or pr<strong>of</strong>ession, or engage in any educational<br />
or o<strong>the</strong>r work, which in <strong>the</strong> opinion <strong>of</strong> those entrusted with <strong>the</strong> administration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund would<br />
interfere with his or her inquiries. In publishing <strong>the</strong> results <strong>of</strong> investigation carried on during his or<br />
her tenure a Student shall, so far as is practicable, use <strong>the</strong> title ‘John Lucas Walker Student’.<br />
11. If <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Pathology shall at any time learn that <strong>the</strong> Student is following any such<br />
business or pr<strong>of</strong>ession, or has undertaken any such work as will in <strong>the</strong> opinion <strong>of</strong> such Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />
interfere with his or her inquiries, <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor shall at once call <strong>the</strong> Student to desist from <strong>the</strong> same,<br />
and if <strong>the</strong> Student shall refuse or neglect so to do, <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor shall report <strong>the</strong> circumstances to <strong>the</strong><br />
Managers, and <strong>the</strong> Managers may, if <strong>the</strong>y think fit, remove such Student from <strong>the</strong> Studentship.<br />
If <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Pathology shall be <strong>of</strong> opinion that, through any o<strong>the</strong>r causes, such as confirmed<br />
ill health or want <strong>of</strong> diligence, <strong>the</strong> Student is not fulfilling and is not likely to fulfil <strong>the</strong> objects <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Studentship, he or she shall report accordingly to <strong>the</strong> Managers, and <strong>the</strong> Managers may, if <strong>the</strong>y see fit,<br />
remove such Student from <strong>the</strong> Studentship.<br />
12. The place and nature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> studies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Student shall be subject to <strong>the</strong> approval <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Pathology, provided that <strong>the</strong> Student shall be bound to study within <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> during<br />
at least three terms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tenure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Studentship, unless <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Pathology shall, with <strong>the</strong><br />
approval <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers, dispense with this requirement for special reasons. The Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Pathology<br />
and <strong>the</strong> Managers shall take such steps as <strong>the</strong>y may think necessary to satisfy <strong>the</strong>mselves as to <strong>the</strong><br />
diligence and progress <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Student, and may require from <strong>the</strong> Student any reports or o<strong>the</strong>r information<br />
on <strong>the</strong> subject <strong>of</strong> his or her studies which <strong>the</strong>y may think desirable.<br />
13. The Studentship shall, subject as hereinbefore mentioned, be tenable for three years, at <strong>the</strong> end<br />
<strong>of</strong> which time a fresh nomination and election shall take place; but it shall be lawful for <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />
<strong>of</strong> Pathology, if he or she shall think fit, to recommend, and for <strong>the</strong> Managers, if <strong>the</strong>y shall think fit,<br />
to elect, for a second period not exceeding two years, any Student whose labours during <strong>the</strong> period <strong>of</strong><br />
holding <strong>the</strong> Studentship shall have been <strong>of</strong> such exceptional promise that it would, in <strong>the</strong> opinion <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Pathology and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers, be clearly in <strong>the</strong> interests <strong>of</strong> pathological research<br />
that such Student should continue to hold <strong>the</strong> Studentship for such fur<strong>the</strong>r period.<br />
14. The income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Studentship shall be payable to such Student from <strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong> his or her<br />
appointment, and shall be paid to <strong>the</strong> Student by equal quarterly payments, <strong>the</strong> payment for each<br />
quarter being made in advance.<br />
15. If, after due notice <strong>of</strong> a vacancy, <strong>the</strong>re shall be, in <strong>the</strong> opinion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers, no suitable<br />
candidate for <strong>the</strong> Studentship, it shall be lawful for <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Pathology, with <strong>the</strong> approval <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Managers, to suspend <strong>the</strong> election for a time not greater than one year, and if at <strong>the</strong> expiration <strong>of</strong><br />
such time <strong>the</strong>re shall, after notice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> vacancy given, be no suitable candidate as aforesaid, <strong>the</strong><br />
election may be again suspended in <strong>the</strong> same way, and so on until, in <strong>the</strong> opinion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers,<br />
<strong>the</strong>re shall be a suitable candidate for <strong>the</strong> Studentship.<br />
Exhibitions and<br />

Exhibitions and Prizes<br />
16. Exhibitions or Prizes may from time to time be awarded by <strong>the</strong> Managers to any person in<br />
respect <strong>of</strong> an essay, discovery, or meritorious service connected with or conducing to <strong>the</strong> science <strong>of</strong><br />
Pathology.<br />
17. No Exhibition or Prize shall exceed <strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong> £50, and not more than £50 shall be expended<br />
in any one year in such Exhibitions or Prizes.<br />
18. No Exhibition or Prize shall be awarded to any person during <strong>the</strong> tenure by such person <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
John Lucas Walker Studentship.<br />
19. The recipient <strong>of</strong> an Exhibition or Prize shall not necessarily be or become a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>University</strong>.<br />

20. The balance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Trust Fund, after providing for <strong>the</strong> Studentship, Exhibitions,<br />
and any Prizes which may have been awarded, and for any necessary expenses connected with <strong>the</strong><br />
management and application <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Trust Fund, may be devoted to <strong>the</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>rance <strong>of</strong> original research<br />
in Pathology.
